Excellent book, and an excellent interview! Self awareness is such a gift, everyone should spend some time learning about themselves and how they relate to the world and others.

Dear John, I hope I don't sound rude, but have you examined the scientific evidence behind this? My understanding is that it is not scientifically validated (unlike the 'big five'). May I tentatively suggest that it would have been useful if you could have mentioned this in the introduction for better context. People trust you and they may get the wrong impression, especially from your video title. I mention this only because I think it extremely important. I hope I don't come across too negative.

Andy! Big Five typology has been empirically supported with compelling evidence for its consistency across-the-board! I'm a family life educator [CFLE], and have both, therapeutic training (D.Min., 2003) as well as research training (Ph.D., 2018). Evidence: credible & published in peer-reviewed articles, NOT IN THE BOOKS!

Holy crap! Dude, what the guy in the pink said at 7:37 ...totally me. People will just tell me things out of nowhere. One guy told me he basically rapped a girl in high school, and i only knew him for like 5 minutes. Another guy on a bus told me about how he became homeless. I have had so many complete strangers tell me things without me even saying a word. I thought maybe it was my face, but now i know why. Crazy! I think I would’ve made a great detective. God had other plans i guess.

In other words, not empirically supported, AND you are right! This typology apart from being "ancient" has no evidence-based support. A book is not a piece of research evidence, but ARTICLES published in peer-reviewed journals are. And none exist that support a trend--like in the Big Five--so, go figure!

My undergraduate students are very into this idea. There are multiple problems with this system empirically, it is not well founded. Massive problems with how they ask questions. Second, the ideology behind it is the occult. Also, this guy is into Jung. If you’re a Christian I’d look into Jung before this material and you’ll realize how anti-Christian Jung really is. The idea that it’s ‘close enough’ it’s a fun picture of you, is a matter of subjective reality denying objective reality.

Hmmmmm ... I've never heard of this particular personality typing before but wondering how it is considered non-Christian except that it's a secular, I guess could be the word, for viewing personality descriptions. I've never heard of Jung either but definitely something new to research that sounds interesting but to learn only what it is & stay away from it!

This typology is not evidence based. In other words, it is B.S. The Big Five typology has been empirically supported with compelling evidence for its consistency across-the-board! I'm a family life educator [CFLE], and have both, therapeutic training (D.Min., Asbury Seminary, 2003) as well as research training (Ph.D., Uni. of Kentucky, 2018). Evidence: credible & published in peer-reviewed journals does NOT support this distorted view of personality typology.

@Anonymous 2020 one of the main issues with self-reporting surveys is the social desirability effect. The questions often used place a dichotomy for the participant to respond to which causes the person not to take an accurate inventory of their own life (memory often isn't accurate) rather decide which trait they like better. I like to say this measure tells you what you think you want to be like than what you actually are.

@@ElijahHunter77 Amen to that. It's a bunch of non-sense that keeps getting discussed in Christian circles like it is solid. We might as well be wasting our time talking about astrology.

I know this was a year ago but yikes!! John really needs to do research on the origins of these things before he promotes them. Every part of the enneagram and it’s history is completely out of line with both God’s teaching and what they claim to stand for at Ramsey Solutions. I know a lot of people have been taken by this, I was one. It’s scary how cunning and deceptive the Devil truly is.
