"Mid Life Crustacean" being banned has really pissed me off. Given by the fact Nickelodeon banned it over the panty raid scene (a scene that shows kids why you shouldn't break and enter other people's houses for panty raids) goes to show they clearly think children would pull the same stupid stunt SpongeBob, Patrick and Krabs did in that episode. This ban was completely unnecessary and it's them pulling out that move just to say they don't respect children's intelligence.

You know I never understood exactly what sparked the “SpongeBob promotes homosexuality to children” opinion before this, so thank you for answering a question that I have wondered for many years. I actually had a pretty real issue with this so-called controversy about 9 to 10 years ago when my son was around kindergarten age. Both my husband and I at the time Lived next-door to his parents and our entire family went to a pretty conservative church. Well just by chance my son got very into SpongeBob and I frequently let him watch it at our home. However when many of our church friends and family found out after my mother-in-law found out, I was hit with all kinds of backlash for allowing him to watch this and buying him SpongeBob clothes and toys. Now I had never heard anything about this controversy before. Suddenly I had all of these people telling me that SpongeBob was homosexual/promoting homosexuality. And I found it almost comically absurd that any reasonable adult could argue that a cartoon Character could even have a Sexual Orientation. And if there was any direct or overtly sexual messages of ANYKIND in the cartoon, I would never allow my young child to watch it. Even considering the episode you discussed that apparently began this misinformed ignorant opinion, The episode does not show anything such as them getting married, setting out wanting a baby together, or anything overtly romantic between them. I mean even when they are living together it does not show anything as suggestive as them sleeping in the same bed, I mean yes they do share SpongeBob‘s bed but not snuggled up together actually it shows them trying to do it in a comical way Without even any physical contact. I took a lot of heat for refusing to ban my son from watching the show. And even when I repeatedly asked, what or where can I find some kind of direct reference of content of any sexual nature at all, The same individuals could not tell me but simply gave me ignorant statements along the lines of” just look at how he talks and acts” or “everyone knows that’s the message Nickelodeon’s intending to portray”. And I choose to be a good Christian by loving all of my fellow man and extending kindness to my fellow man By judging them on the kind of human being they are and understanding I have no right to pass any judgment on them further than that. So despite My personal and religious beliefs, I know that I have no right to pass judgement nor look down on the LGBTQ+..or any other community for that matter. (Anyone who reads and believes in their Bible like me, should know that we all fall short of God and are sinners by nature in one form or another and he directly tells us that judging others puts them closer to heaven than us). Adults should also be smart enough to remember with shows aimed at small children, almost all kids that age just see the humor and direct message presented,And take it at face value, most cannot possibly understand the complexities of adult issues and apply them to their cartoons. I remember when my little boy watched the episode in question, he never even made any kind of mention to me about the baby having two daddies, or about it being wrong or even strange. He simply saw it as two friends working together to help the little scallop. He laughed more about SpongeBob growing so many arms to do all of those chores and Patrick pretending to go to work but going and sleeping under his rock all day and Remember those parts well enough that that’s what he mentioned afterwards. And it was things like that that he enjoyed the show for even when there was a little bit of social commentary here and there it was pretty much lost on him. Because he was a child, he was still simple innocent and naïve to complex or adult issues. I wish more adults realized that when we take children’s cartoons (as long as they don’t contain clearly inappropriate material), we are the ones who make children aware of grown-up topics instead of doing what we should do as good parents and protecting the time they have to enjoy that period of carefree innocence, because the world will take it from them soon enough. In the end I told all of my detractors that I frankly thought they were acting less educated than my kindergartner by arguing to me that a cartoon sponge can be a Homosexual 🙄. I refused to put a stop to him watching it at my home, and although his grandma and grandpa did all they could to try to deter him from wanting to watch it, and went out of their way to get him to find a new “favorite cartoon”. But in the end when he asked why he wasn’t allowed to watch it over there, they couldn’t give him a good explanation. Because when they were interacting solely with my son, even they didn’t fully buy their own argument. If they truly Believed that this cartoon portrayed some kind of homosexual message that my child was capable of understanding and picking up on…they could’ve simply said just that. But they knew in their hearts that my son didn’t have any concept of sexual relations or matters, and they didn’t want to be the ones to actually do what they were accusing a cartoon of, and put an adult message he was way too young to hear in his head. Parents……if instead of us picking apart everything our children may see & hear for some kind of perceived Political Incorrectness or Argument. Then fighting constantly to block out, sensor, and wall off, all subject matter, even if imaginary, that conflicts with our values. Maybe put that time to actual good use, Like I used to. Actually sit down and watch the shows your kids like, Watch or play their favorite video games with them, and talk to your kids while they’re engaged with things they enjoy, ask them about why they like that particular thing and ask them to Explain a little bit about it to you. This grants you an actual understanding of how your child sees this content and what makes it attractive to them. To many parents in the world today are forgetting the importance of maintaining an actual dialogue with your child. They enjoy the convenience of having technology too act as a surrogate parent, and assume enough censorship eventually will be enough to protect all children. I know it takes a little more time, but look at and evaluate your child as an individual. Have conversations every now and then, allow them to ask questions, and despite any personal feelings you may have allow them to speak and listen to them even if the topic is uncomfortable or something you strongly disagree with. No matter how hard you try there will come a time when you cannot keep total control of outside influence. And if you only allow discussion and understanding that lines up with your views. That is the point where we fail them as parents. As their age and understanding permits we have to allow them to be exposed to real world issues. And if you don’t foster and nurture this open dialogue, and let them know you will always be there with understanding and an open mind if they need to talk. You will just hurt both yourself and your child in the long run. Because you will not stop them from finding out about a topic if they are curious. You will just cause them to seek advice elsewhere, that may not be from someone good or may be incorrect altogether. You may also prevent them from coming to you for help if a serious matter arises and they’re life or wellbeing may depend on it. Preventing children from vulgar language, obscenity, sexual material, violent movies & video games, sensitive topics, inappropriate music or anything else, will never take the place of an involved loving parent. You can teach your child what your religious or family values are on certain matters, while still responsibly educating them on those issues and teaching them that we don’t have to agree with others beliefs, but we I have to respect them as individual people and we have to respect their right to have their own beliefs.

Selling out imo is way better then sailor mouth because its way ahead of its time for big corporations. You sell out your work and if they don’t like it. They take it away from you and you can’t do anything about it. The funny thing is that this episode was by C.H Greenblatt. Creator of Harvey Beaks and the same thing happened to C.H Greenblatt except Carl (based of Greenblatt is the Mr.Krabs/Nickelodeon and the workers are Greenblatt and his team) and things falled apart resulting in his show being cancelled. Quite the scary harsh truth that happens to hard working show creators on big corporations selling out their soul only to get short term attention.

It's a good video, as always, but as a follow-up to the whole thing about "stereotyping people and them disliking it," Jacksepticeye recently did a video where he was reading reviews of his channel on a website that tells parents about content for children. Most of the negative reviews for Sean's channel (and even some of the positive ones) did nothing but bring up swearing and he was basically like 'I spent all of this time promoting focusing on your mental health, raising all of this money for charity, and trying to be a good force in the world...and all anyone remembers about me is the swearing.' I had started watching this before I saw that video from Sean, but seeing him come up as the image for "swearing in the KZbin gaming space" after seeing him talk about how that's anyone seems to know about him hits a little differently than it probably would have before.

Figures that about half of these controversies are politically motivated. The "Sailor Mouth" issue clearly was just an absurd, uptight, zero-tolerance complaint with little to nothing to back it up (reminds me of "Banned in Bikini Bottom"). For that "Just One Bite" scene, I mean, the whole Tide Pods incident made me lose confidence that some kids _wouldn't_ try that. Then again, this stunt would fit right into Looney Toons and other such cartoons, and _they_ repeatedly give the impression that any number of lethal things would only give you mild to moderate injury.

As a Canadian, I'm pretty certain Mid-Life Crustacean was banned from Canadian airings far before Nick banned it in America, but I don't recall exactly when. I recall watching it on tv much less compared to other episodes, so it did at least have its reruns for a while, but it was surprisingly banned in Canada before Nick banned it for America (which I would only realize when I saw that YTV, a Toronto based station, would skip it while airing the episodes in order every now and then). Canada tends to more laid back about censorship, so I always thought it was weird it was banned with no word before Nick's official statement. Probably it being paired with The Great Snail didn't help at all. Funny enough, in Canadian airings we still get other things censored in America airings, like the Just One Bite "deleted scene" and the Red Mist reference in Spongebob in Randomland. Lucky for me, I have "Midlife Crustacean" on one of the old Spongebob Squarepants DVDs. I mainly liked it, because Mr Krabs wasn't being greedy or cheap. Like you said, he was seen on the side of "relatable" when he has his midlife crisis. Also in "Procrastination," I actually got a chuckle from the second deleted scene because since we all know how bad Spongebob was at driving, I just thought it was another way of showing how bad Spongebob was at driving. Also also, "Sailor Mouth" was freaking hilarious! Yes it had excessive swearing, but the thing was that no one said actual curse words. So how could little kids learn the words, if the words aren't even being said? If anything, they would just learn how to impersonate a dolphin and that's it. ALSO ALSO ALSO, I don't know about you, but "Selling Out" might be one of my FAVORITE Mr Krabs episodes of all time. Reason being: Krabs has ran the Krusty Krab for such a long time and (for the most part in early seasons) did a good job keeping the restaurant going. But when he gets back and sees that everything has gone downhill since he left, he takes full action on bringing the old Krusty Krab back. THAT'S what I liked about this episode, the fact that he would give up on all the money he was given to go back to work at the restaurant HE created!

What would've made the filler episode more enjoyable is if our spongy protagonist got a job at a sandwich shop since Krabby Patties or burgers in general are technically sandwiches. Mr. Krabs, disappointed at SpongeBob's success at his new job tries to hire him back but he refuses leading into a sort of mini-season where Krabs tries to re-hire him to no avail eventually culminating into the filler's episodic plot but reversed.

20:28 even as a kid, I already knew what they were censoring out lol. As an "adult" I still don't see the issue in cussing. "cuss words" are just words that as a society you're TAUGHT to think they're "bad" and as you get older, the cuss words are more accepted to the point it's very common for teens and especially adults, to cuss. Plus they ARE "sentence enhancers" depending on how they're used. Often times cussing is used to represent when a character is overwhelmed with frustration and reaching their breaking point. But when a character cusses almost all the time, it can make them seem less intelligent. Really, the older you get, the more cussing becomes like a balancing act

"Are you feeling it now mr krabs" was one of the most quoted moments in spongebob when I was growing up. Even in highschool I have memories of people quoting it and getting laughs. Now that moment is banned due to a panty raid that was portrayed as a cautionary tale. That's just sad.

I really like the joke of putting the Krusty Krab on top of the Chum Bucket because it's "somewhere no one ever goes," making it perfectly safe for Bikini Bottom. I understand why the episode was banned, but that alone is a good payoff to the episode, I think

24:57 well if I went back in cartoon time I woud disguise as Patrick and get him immediately away from that place and give them more ingenious ideas of more squirrel jokes while being on a roll about making fun of all squirrel reptiles. It’s not personal it’s just Business. Butt monkey business.
