This was terrific, Brian. The Whistler set was also my favorite of the year; I nearly attempted a backflip when it was announced. Holding out hope that Indicator can liberate another Columbia radio-based series, I Love a Mystery. Those three films are a lot of fun. Picking up the Seeing Red set on your good word. Thanks again!

"All the Haunts... 2" was another AMAZING bit of mega-joy for me. So grateful for Kier-la's efforts in both sets. Unreal.

Great picks as always. Will pick up WHISTLER, SEEING RED, AFTER DARK 3 and ALL THE HAUNTS 2 sooner than later! Meanwhile, my #1 boxset of the year is FRANK CAPRA AT COLUMBIA from Sony. Just think about it. In this day and age of great boutique labels doing God's work instead of most major Hollywood studios, one studio out of nowhere releases one big box set of a major old Hollywood master's 20 features (and a new feature-length career-spanning documentary), 12 of them never released on Blu-ray before, all remarkably restored, and 9 of them are on 4K discs as well? That's something I never dreamt of even in my wildest dreams. And what pictures, especially his lesser-known, underseen late 20s and early 30s works! I thought I knew and liked Frank Capra enough, but this box set made me rediscover and love him.

@@JustTheDiscs Buy with confidence, please. Frankly, I thought I would have to 'endure' some promising yet ultimately clumsy and boring early works (as one might feel about Alfred Hitchcock's early films), films only diehard fans and scholars can enjoy. That was not the case at all. Capra started directing as early as the Mack Sennett era, the days of great clowns and two-reelers. So by 1928, the earliest year this set covers, he was already a somewhat seasoned professional. He made 7 features that year and this set has 4 of them, and I found all were well-paced, technically competent if not breathtaking, and highly engaging. I didn't have to endure anything, except the desire to watch another right after finishing one. If you still need a gateway recommendation, hear this out: SUBMARINE (1928). Yes, young Frank Capra made a fucking submarine movie! And if that's not enough, it's a disaster movie as well! It's worth seeing if only for a lot of jaw-dropping footage capturing Navy activities, and it doesn't seem they just mish-mashed existing newsreel footage but actually photographed them all with full support from the Navy. You can see not just one boat but the entire fleet running at high speed, a ship plane taking off on an aircraft carrier, a ship lowering an amphibian on water with a crane, and of course, exquisite underwater scenes. Seriously, this set is nothing short of a revelation, perhaps even more so to those familiar with his major works starting with IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT.

Some nice sets there and I did pick a fair few of those up myself but am yet to get the second Severin Haunts box set. The first one was amazing and the second one looks just as fantastic from what I've seen on vids like yours. I really enjoyed the World Noir sets from Radiance (I think volume 1 also came out this year?) and the sci fi themed Tales of Adventure volume 4 from Imprint was also fantastic. I love those old pulp sci fi serials and I'd love to see someone fully restored all the old Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers serials !

I'm only 1 disc into All the Haunts Be Ours 2 so far, but it definitely seems as high quality as the first set. Great movies and features. While expensive, both sets feel like bargains when you factor in all the content you receive.

BTW as you undoubtedly know, THE WHISTLER was part of the "B" movie prigram at Columbia; but due to the enormous popularity of the radio series, and the quality of these "quickie" films, they became a bigger draw than the "A" film they accompanied.

Richard Dix had a long career, going back to silents, usually as a square jawed hero in westerns and adventure films. He is the star of the first sound version of 7 KEYS TO BALDPATE and is quite amusing in it; but, as in the overrated Oscar winner CIMARRON, he was stalwart and distant, and only in THE WHISTLER series and a few others in the 40s such as GHOST SHIP does he come into his own as an actor by showing vulnerability and a modicum of versatility.

Dix drives me crazy in GHOST SHIP, but he’s not bad in it
