Wonderful list of things to do. I am German and I also lived in the Austrian Alps near Innsbruck for 11 years. What is also amazing, besides the cities you mentioned, is simply enjoying the stunning nature. The mountains, the meadows, the waterfalls. I love that whole region so much. I do live in Australia and cannot wait to visit Munich and surrounds again soon. Thank you for your great video

Was in Munich in May this year. Took my wife on her first ever trip outside of the USA. We stayed 2 days in Munich then enjoyed a 10 day stay in Garmisch. Traveled to Austria, Italy, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Visited Linderhof palace (King Ludwig II personal home and the only one to be completed before his death). The palace and surrounding grounds were amazing. While we were part of a tour group, I had lived at a Gasthaus in a small village outside of Ramstein AFB while stationed there in the 1980‘s. So while the rest of the tour group did touristy things, we did our own exploring/shopping and had fun with the locals. My German is so-so and my wife doesn’t speak it at all but that‘s what made it fun for us…..get in there and go for it!! From making friends with Edith, the 88 year old owner of a yarn shop, to finding a Turkish restaurant with actual Turks owning and running it. I had lived for several years in Turkey and surprised the owner by speaking some Turkish. My wife had only had Turkish food made by Americans in the USA so this was her first time tasting the real McCoy. Let’s just say there‘s a big difference between the two. One day I‘ll take her to Turkey when it’s a little safer and take her to some out of the way villages and resorts not frequented by tourist that I know of. We really enjoy your channel…please keep it up. Prost

We really enjoyed Munich. We took 2 day trips. One on our own on the train to Dachau. It was a very emotional day, and definitely worth the trip out. The other was to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. We took a tour, and it included this lovely midevil town with half-timbered roofs, and cobblestone roads. It looks really like a fairy tale. We loved it. I highly recommend both. I will be visiting Salzburg in the spring of 2026, and hope to plan a day trip over to Munich.

I live 40 km away from Füssen. The whole Allgäu region is beautiful. However, you definiitely need more than a day here :D Should be a separate vacation.
@keithparker51253 ай бұрын
You are right! We holiday every year in the Allgäu and base ourselves in Oberreitnau on the edge of Lindau. Not only is Lindau the perfect base for the Allgäu but as it is on the shore of the Bodensee, Muenchen and Zurich are within 2hrs train travel as are Friedrichshafen, Bregenz, Bludenz, and Liechtenstein! Another plus for the German Bodensee is that hotel guests get free train and bus travel in the area for the duration of their stay (paid for by the Kurtax) with the Bodenseekart.

I spent a week in Munich and surrounds in April, taking in many of the sights you mentioned. If you’re in Regensburg, Walhalla is easily accessible by bus and was a highlight of my trip. Don’t forget to take a quick walk around Lake Eibsee when visiting Zugspitze.

Missed a really great one : Andechs Abby. Its absolutely beautiful and they have a great brewery and serve traditional Bavarian food. I really enjoyed the huge 1 litre glasses with the dark bock beer thats made right there on site. Thats like a meal in itself. Especially when the weather is nice the Biergarten is an absolute joy! It also has a beautiful Baroque church where among others the famous composer Carl Orff is buried. On clear days you can see the Alps rise up in the distance from the top level of the complex which makes for a spectacular sight. Also there are many hiking trails through the surrounding countryside which offer great views on the iconic abby. And the fun thing about it is that many of the visitors are locals themselves so then you really know you are at the right place.

@mahasidha9 I know. I had the 1 litre dark bock which was heavy and a bit sweet. Delicious! Also had the 1 litre pilsner which goes down a lot easier. Had an amazing piece of roast pork with crispy crackling with some homemade potato salad. Absolutely amazing and very reasonably priced I might add.

@mahasidha9 I especially liked how the food is just perfect in combination with very large volumes of beer. A more than 2000 years old town with its famous "Fuggerei", the oldest public housing project in the world and the "Maxstrasse", one of the most beautiful boulevards in Germany.Augsburg was not hit by World War 2 as hard as Nuernberg, so there are more old buildings that survived war. My favorite day trip from Munich is to Andechs Monastery and Brewery. You can get a great meal there with some of the best beer and views in Bavaria. Then go to nearby Ammersee (Lake) where you can have a beer at the lakeside beer garden, Seehof Hershing. A beautiful Bavarian day in nature and 45 minute train ride on the S8 and a 30 minute picturesque walk thru the hills.

I love Munich. I would add to your list Oberschleissheim, located right North of Munich, next to Dachau. It has a beautiful baroque palace (where Kubrick used to film Paths of Glory in the 1950's) and a former military airbase that saw service in both world wars and currently houses the aviation exhibit of the Deutsches Museum. Another location I love and would recommend is Prien am Chiemsee which is located roughly halfway on the train trip between Salzburg and Munich. The main attraction there is of course the unfinished Herrenchiemsee palace (another one of Ludwig II's megalomaniac projects) on the Herreninsel island of the lake Chiemsee.

For the southern Bavarian places like Fuessen, Garmisch, etc, I would strongly consider staying the night in one of these places and then exploring the area from there. If the train ride is 1.5 hrs one way, I consider staying at that location.

So with regards to 1:46 my first trip was in June when the cotton trees were in bloom. It was also a day when the Bundeswehr recruits were there as part of their required training. It was surreal to be there with these lads who took what was being reinforced to never to allow such an atrocity to happen again. I tried to keep them out of all of the pictures out of respect for their training. To add to the surreal, when we were by the ovens, the cotton was falling from the trees which one can guess what image that gave. Yes, it's a required trip and more than once in order to experience different guides. So on to Nürnberg. I was speaking of the city, which I opined needed a coat of paint as it resembled Milwaukee, to one of our German immigrant residents. She told me I MUST return but during the Christmas season as they have one of the best and most beautiful Christkindlesmarkts in all of Germany.

You're looking at close to 3 hours each way (by car or train) to Rothenburg. It's possible, but it makes for a rough day trip. Bamberg and Nurnberg are on a high speed line, so they're much easier to reach.

Mark, my grown nieces are treating me to a trip to the Christmas Markets this December. We're basing in Munich for a few days, taking the train to both Nuremberg and Salzburg. Later, we're doing the TGV to Strasbourg. Do we need train reservations beforehand? Do you recommend reserved seats ir 1st class on TGV? You know this stuff much better than I do. Thank you!
@markeschen3 ай бұрын
I hope Mark responds, but in case he doesn't, I'll give you my (much less valuable) opinion. I always make reservations on high speed rail in Europe. Depending on when you travel, those trains can sell out, and they don't let you on if there are no seats available. 1st Class seats are always a splurge and they're never needed. That said, If I'm planning far enough in advance, and the singles seats across from each other with the table are available, I will spend on those.

Mark, as always a great video. Only thing that confuses me a bit: Why are you not calling german places by their proper name? I mean calling München "Munic" and for example pronouncing some of the names american instead of german. For me, part of traveling is not to fully learn the language but at least try to properly call names. 😉

I mean, for someone like yourself who just made a lot of grammatical errors, you shouldn't really be judging others. Here's something crazy which just might blow your mind: most people in the world don't speak German. 😮 Anyway, when you ever visit China, make sure to make a video, pronounce the Chinese town you're in correctly and upload it to KZbin so we can all bask in your linguistic triumph.
