@@dennisdavidov782 The cutoff for The Game Awards is in mid-November, was Nov. 17th this year, so any game that comes out after that isn't eligible until the next year. Chained Echoes came out on Dec. 8th 2022, the same day as the show, and by then most websites had already posted their 2022 GOTY lists. Cyberpunk 2077 was nominated for Best RPG in 2021 despite coming out on Dec. 10th 2020, but obviously there's a big gap there in name recognition and marketing dollars.

Octopath Traveler 2 changed me as a gamer. I was genuinely depressed when it was over and I still haven’t found a game that filled the void it left. That was a once in a lifetime gaming experience for me. It hit me deep in the emotions and I also really enjoyed it and had a blast playing it. It was everything I look for in a game. The voice acting and the music is what took it from amazing to astounding.

I think recognizing that Octopath Traveler 2 is a special game is really important. That said, I think trying to look for a game that fills that void isn't advisable, as it often distracts us from appreciating what each game offers. Gaming is like having a delicious meal that can never be replicated again, as it should be!

I'm with you! SO2r and OT2 were my 2 favorite games of 2023 too! And I'll go one step further and say that I loved them both so much, they forced their way into my top 5 of all-time. I'll be 41 in March so I've been around for a bit too lol And I also played Chained Echoes for the first time last March, so it's probably my 3rd favorite. I did like it slightly more than Sea of Stars. I also interestingly liked Sea of Stars' chronological sequel The Messenger slightly more too lol.

It's great to see Octopath Traveler II get unanimous praise here because it's a truly excellent game. I really enjoyed my time with the games that appeared in these lists and I'd like to play those I haven't. While some of my personal favorites weren't as popular as these games, all of them are still tasteful selections and I was happy to see them be praised. That Alex, the channel community, and the guest contributors all have such great taste is something in which we can all feel proud. When great people come together to discuss great games, that creates something special where we can learn to view our favorite games from new perspectives after hearing of the experiences that others had with them.

Lots of good stuff here with fair rankings. Of the games in this list, the only two I've completed so far are Tears of the Kingdom, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Octopath Traveler II, Fire Emblem Engage, and Final Fantasy XVI are all in my own backlog. I also hope to pick up Star Ocean: The Second Story R sometime soon as I did play and enjoy the demo. Another friend of mine got his wife a PS5 for Christmas for Baldur's Gate 3. I guess they've been playing it regularly together, so I kind of laughed when you mentioned someone saying they got it to play with their wife too.

I put 80h into Octo 1 this year and got every character to their last chapter but I dropped it because I felt I had already played it due to its repetitive formula. Played the demo of 2 cause I've been hearing it changes/fixes a lot but it didn't help, I felt like I was playing Octo 1 again. Sure, it might be that the changes appear further on but I don't know how much is that in terms of hours and how much I can tolerate. Maybe it's one of those I don't have to force myself to enjoy and just let it be.

Octopath Traveler 1 is a very divisive game, and the OT2 demo doesn't really scratch the surface of how many improvements the game has over the original. The fact that it has a time limit doesn't help either. Much of the OT2 has everything to do with the freedom to do whatever you want, which the first one really didn't embrace well enough. There's a reason why no one had OT1 on any Game of the Year lists (mine included) and OT2 is in ours - it really is a bigger difference than a 3 hour demo can properly convey

@LightyGab Part of it is realizing that you don't have the time limit looming over your head in the demo when you have the full version. You really could just explore the world with just one character if you'd like and even unlock some jobs early on. Later chapters actually split, allowing you to tackle them in any order you want, and it'll still work in the narrative. There's also dungeons that are off the beaten path that are interesting to explore, as well as lore that you can mine if you liked that sort of thing in the Souls games/Elden Ring. Granted, do like the choice of games. BG3 would be my goty. D&D is the father of rpg element and many creators of the jrpg genre have took inspiration from the tabletop since 1974. Thou i do heavily love my jrpgs , gotta admit that bg3 just does everything much better , its new to the loads of 16bit pixel rpg game that weve been getting alot of in the genre and subgenres. Excluding FF16 [ loved it but have some questionable experiences while playing it. ]

While I don't disagree with the people, it's quite funny that two out of my three most recent games are FE Engage and Octopath 2, which were both good but for some reason I found lacking. Currently playing a gem from -91, Langrisser 1 and totally enjoying it above the aforementioned two games. Less social sim stuff and more gameplay on FE:E and it would have been up there with Lang for me. Then again that's not really the comparison we're doing here as they're not the same year releases.

There's a demo (at least on Switch, but I would assume on other consoles & PC as well?), so you could try that first! And I do want to mention that if you are a story-first gamer, this might still not work as well for you as for others. Even though they improved in that aspect compared to the first one. But either game's battle system is super fun, and definitely worth a try!

Thanks for the tips ^_^ I actually own Octopath 1 but haven't played it yet, so perhaps I'll move onto that first before buying the sequel. Plus, since the OST for 1 is on KZbin Music, I'll be able to listen to that as I go along! I've heard the music for 1 and 2 are masterful.

As I said, many consider the second better, but in my humble opinion there's plenty to love in the first as well 😊 And if you do feel like the first doesn't work 100% for you, you can still try the demo for the second and get a feel for the changes 😊 Oh the music is divine! I personally think the music in the second isn't as good as the first, but in the sense of the first being a 12/10 and OT II being a 10/10 😂

If I had to choose, I think I would say Nayuta: Boundless Trails. I'm not into action JRPGs, but I had a really hard time putting this game down, and the collector's edition was stunning as is typical of NISA. Eternights was another one that completely surprised me. My biggest disappointment was RAIN CODE, especially how far in advance I ordered it. It started off with promise, but then went south quickly, and the collector's edition was shoddy and both copies I got were damaged due to the poor construction of the box. Oh, and hell yes: Octopath Traveler II was a perfect game in almost every way... such an improvement to the original. It just seems so long ago that I had forgotten it was released in 2023. I would like to try ANONYMOUS;CODE soon, and think it might grab a spot as one of the best 2023 games for me, but I have so many other games to catch up on. 😅 This was also the year that I discovered OMORI, which is not a 2023 game, but skyrocketed to my favorite game of all time, which says a lot, given that I've been gaming for 41 years now...

Fire Emblem: Engage was a tough one for me... it was fun, but it was probably my least favourite FE game of the ones I've played. The characters were nowhere as memorable to me as Awakening, Fates, Echoes, and Three Houses. The only good thing I loved about this game was the fact that full same-sex relationships were permitted, which was well overdue for Fire Emblem after their very poor showings in earlier attempts. Between the gacha mechanics, the lack of a solid cast, and how disappointing the collector's edition was, I felt rather disappointed after waiting so long for another FE game only to get this.
