It's not the age, it's the amount of obligations and kids you have. I'm 44 and if it weren't for my two kids, I would game like I did on my 20s.

My SO plays her Vita religiously. She's a doctor in sports medicine and she says that playing something and keeping up with new releases and trends helps her immeasurably at work since she mostly sees collegiate athletes. I'm basically a househusband so even though I am home more often I'm doing all the maintenance and hold a job that is split between months of WFH and long distance travel. We still only find about 8-10 hours to game together.

40s. Kids. Busy medical career. Gaming is one of my wind down activities. Still really enjoy it. I have gotten away from hardcore sweaty gaming and much more prefer easier more relaxed difficulties. No Mans Sky, Starfield, V rising, and Rogue Trader are my go to. My dad is in his 70s and still games. Diablo 4 and Ages of Empire are his jam. He is much more of a competitive max difficulty, hardcore than me.

I’m 52 - mobile software engineer with little free time trying to split it between gaming and my other, cycling hobby. I’ve been gaming since the 8bit micros era. In summary, I’d say I noticed the following: - I focus on fewer games which offer an artistic experience, not just great gameplay. Hence, developers like ATLUS is what I’m after these days. - I no longer pay any attention to anyone who considers gaming as something “unusual” for someone of my age. Not caring for such negativity is one of the benefits that comes with age. Great video and channel - greetings from Greece!

I turned 45 in February and gaming for me has come nearly full circle. I've been divorced for 13 years, my two oldest kids are grown, and my youngest that I raised as a single dad is 15 now and she turned out to be a gamer (and my third straight A's student). So I've been back to gaming like I did as a teenager, nights and weekends are mine to do whatever I want.

Great video. I'm nearly 41, married without kids. I can manage maybe 5 to 8 hours of gaming a week. I get up much earlier than my wife in the morning, so I hit the gym and then squeeze in about an hour of gaming (or another hobby like reading, sometimes both). Or I squeeze it in during evenings she works late. The trick as you get older is to not let it interfere with your real life responsibilities. And that goes for any hobby, not just gaming.

I'm 54. I grew up with a gamer dad. He was in the computer field. The family would go to work with him. They would play Adventure (Colossal cave). We had a pinball machine and a tempest machine at home. Naturally we had an Atari, and later on the Atari 5200. I couldn't help but to be a gamer. I exercise in VR. Beat Saber can burn a thousand calories in an hour! I collect video game consoles and games. I think I'm over 30 consoles now. I love to play retro. I do have a switch and an Xbox and I use them quite frequently. I love Rocket League! I also like games like Need for Speed, Life is Strange series, Mario Golf, and just about everything else. My sister and I are about to start Stray (The second time for me first time for her). We play long distance over Xbox. I feel really privileged to have seen this industry grow.

I think the scope of how you play games has to change when you get older. It’s no longer about 100%ing something. If I can get the credits to roll then that’s a huge achievement at this point.

I also think the completionist mindset is just not the way most players should approach games. Sure, if that’s your bag and the way you enjoy games and don’t mind playing fewer titles as a tradeoff then by all means, go for it. But most people aren’t gonna have the time to complete every single game and if they start to expect themselves to, they will quickly tire themselves out and find gaming to become a chore rather than a hobby. It’s important to remember that gaming should be fun and if you’re not having fun, take a break. Your games aren’t going anywhere.

Don't ever let your childhood die. If it dies, you will lose a piece of you along with. You can game at any age. You decide how you want to enjoy your time and your life. Look at how fast life flew by. Yesterday, you were an 8 year old being all giddy around christmas time to open that present and suddenly, you're sitting in your cubicle, or working the graveyard shift in your 40's or 50's wondering about the good ol' days and the modern day and the future that lies ahead. Go home, fire up that video game system and escape to a different world for an hour or two. Love it!!!

Great video! I'm only 31 but it's nice to get some perspective. I do plan to game for the rest of my life. I've been playing since 4 years old and never stopped. I made decisions in life (and got lucky in some areas) that support my hobby. I am happily married and have a full time job that allows me to work from home and buy all the gaming toys I want. But the big thing I think is not having kids. I never wanted kids because I heavily value my own time. I'm content being the cool uncle. Like you said, the interactive element of video games is why they're different from tv and movies. Also glad to see you like the Fromsoft games! I really enjoy all of those too

But over the past 10 years or so I've steadily made more money and I have fewer commitments outside of work, so I just do the things i like to do in my free time. It is funny how many people still view playing video games as a watse of time, but talk about binging a netflix show. Like that is time better spent just staring at a TV.

The market is also insane, added to the before commented conditions like time vs income, work + family. After Covid19 a ton of projects were launched and these late years after you can bearly focus on a single title while such amazing new limied edition gems are poping to the market, its like one eye on your own, another to play and a third eye opening to the watch to hunt those new releases or even back them. Therefore the roll of you guys utube gaming guiders have got a lot in my heart. Keep it up man. I am open to all variables, but you are right about accessibility, making it challenging and energy-time consuming. I do have my selection of games thinking in my childrens gaming legacy. Inspiring! Although I think we have similarities of priorities and thoughts. As I am almost hit my 40’s soon, still, gaming is one of my few hobbies that never can stop. This is because since elementary school, I struggled my marks to get my first console (from my parents), and it continued in every console release until reached the age when I can buy my own consoles (start from PS3). Hence, a lot of things coming up in life and there was rise and fall cycles in my gaming world, but the thing I found fascinating is the consistency. It is OK to enjoy gaming even though only half hours a day. Actually I enjoy a sense of progressing. Now I am in the level where I need to be selective with a game selection, be honest, I am playing FF7 Rebirth right now, it takes month but I am in 80% to go to platinum. I am happy people find reason how they put efforts to remain consistent, even keep the consistency with changes in world of gaming.

I think realizing that people can change and have the power to make things better for themselves versus wanting to change something external is the most important part of growing up. I'm hoping that this video helped some of the younger folk realize that.

Im not yet in my 30s but i do have some disabilities that prevent me from gaming as much as I want. I'm quite glad we're living in a time where people are thinking more and more about accessibility when designing games. I hope you enjoy Mana Khemia! I love the game a lot. I never got to finish the 2nd game (a rare find) because my PS2 gave up on me. If you enjoy it, you might enjoy the Atelier Iris series as well!

I like to stay in shape. Lately i have been really deliberate about getting my cardio in. I have an exercise bike that i like to do at least 30 min a day on. Ill play my steam deck and switch while I do this or even move it in front of my TV if im feeling like doing something on that. You gotta get creative to make the time as you get older!

I agree 100% on playing multiple games at the same time. I used to just power through one at a time and would get tired by the end. For the last year or so I've been switching between 2-4 games at any one time and I'm enjoying them more now.

I'm in my late 30s and I'm still gaming a lot, the video game franchises such as eiyuden, Witcher, GTA, super robot wars, Gundam, hunting, etc, but I love RPG type the most and the reason I am still playing video games is because I don't wanna miss out any of those classic franchise to say the least, on the other hand, no matter how old I get, I'll still love playing video games.

I’m 47 from East Asia. So I’ve been playing from the beginning of video game in Japan. Married but doesn’t have children. I still buy and play games and can see myself keep buying and playing game until the day I die just because I’ve been playing game my whole life and just to keep myself updated for the game industry. But I don’t feel the magic of video games no more.

At the near age of 50 I have often awaken to a game over screen or a character runing in a corner of a room. It has a lot to do with work hours, family life, social obligations such as ministry. I know people who don't play games ever but miss movies, never finish books, and fall asleep on their favorite sports teams. It's just adulting in general.

@BacklogBattle Love ya, man! I discovered the deliciousness of Persona 5 at 43yo and that of From Software's just weeks ago, and have migrated from western games to JRPGs since then. As for other Japanese games I always loved, they are Resident Evil, MGS and others, though they feel western-like Today, 47yo, and I still will be playing Atlus, Falcom, Sq.Enix and others for life! 😊

For me, games are just as valid an art form as movies and books. I see no reason why age should be a factor. I'm 33, married, have a 3 year old daughter and work full time. I don't get much time for gaming but man I love those 20 to 30 minutes those evenings when I get to settle down with a game. Aside from having less time, the only really difference I noticed is that I'm far more open to using Easy mode in some games now. My primary reason for playing is for the stories and gameplay is becoming less important as my free time reduces. Personally, I plan on gaming until the end. It's an interactive form of entertainment that directly engages my brain instead of having me just sit there staring at the screen. I love it

At 37, with a wife, 5y/o son, and a career, I don't have the free time to game like I used to. I used to spend hours playing Legend of Legaia, FF Tactics, Front Mission 3, ncaa football, and I loved it. I just had to adjust my priorities as my life changed. It can be done.

Handling fatigue and backlogs is hard, but I agree with you! Last year I kept a written log of all the games i beat, and would not start another game until I finished what I was on. No matter what. I looked at the list at the end, had finished 63 games, and had truly enjoyed less than ten. And I think it was mostly cuz I forced myself to keep playing even if I either wasn’t enjoying it or wanted to play something else more so I would rush through and not take the time to enjoy. This year I am just bouncing around and playing what I want at a given time and I am dropping things I don’t enjoy. It has been so much better!

Great video. I’m 55 and still gaming despite disabilities. If anything, my tastes have broadened, and while perhaps my memory and my aim have weakened, my feel for movement and flow have improved., such that I’m overall a stronger player. I think the earliest gamers have a lot of perspective that’s underutilized in many of today’s major releases.

In my late 50s been playing since the Spectrum and Commodore days. I now play more than I did in my 30s and 40s due to career and responsibilities, and now in a position where I have lots more free time, lots more disposable income, and it’s still great fun. Downside of age is reaction time and reflexes, however I can still hold my own in multiplayer lobbies due to just playing more intelligently, and yeah decades of experience is much better in my opinion. You can’t beat experience, so use it to your advantage. As for single player games I find I have a higher completion rate of games compared to even 10 yrs ago. Also all the games I’ve bought and consoles I’ve bought, I still own so it’s become a very huge collection that has value, so yeah there is now an investment angle.
