I can’t get past Octopath as a cozy RPG. No anxiety or stress? I think we had different experiences with that game!

I was thinking the same. It tickles the nostalgia itch for sure but the battle system requires a lot of thinking as you can’t just mindlessly smash your way through random battles not to mention bosses can be pretty hard, plus some parts of the story like Primrose’s that deals with revenge, prostitution, etc. is pretty dark. Hardly what I would call cozy on that front

Atelier Ryza is a awesome one. The atelier series is probably the most underrated modern JRPG series. Thousand Arms I gotta try out I saw someone stream it, but never played it myself. I used to see it all the times in stores back in PS1 era and always wondered about it. Stardew Valley I've heard is incredible from a lot of people with some friends I know saying it's their favorite indie game.

Octopath is a great choice, I loved being able to discover each corner of the world when I felt like it, not being forced to go to certain towns because something urgent was happening

Great list. Harvestella was definitely a pleasant surprise and much like World of FF ended up having a much deeper and satisfying story than I was expecting from first impressions. I’d add games like Rhapsody (really excited by yesterdays announcement!), the Atelier Mysterious series, Trails in the Sky FC as 80% of the game is just exploring the beautiful Liberl and seeing Estelle and Joshua’s relationship develop. Also for me personally the Shining Force games as I’ve played them so many times they are kind of a comfort food for me.

Great list! I just finished Grandia and while it's relatively "simple" in a lighthearted, fun, unpretentious way, it's hardly what I would call relaxing/cozy. It's pretty tense! Octopath looks like a great next choice for me.

You literally just listed my entire game library. I hope if anyone sees this now they add Sea of Stars to their list! Octopath 2, Atelier Ryza series, Harvestella, Dragon Quest Treasures, Rune Factory, Monster Hunter Stories, Pokémon, Dredge, Graveyard Keeper, Subnautica… some of the best gameplay loops. Not boring farming sims but not overly stressful combat at all. Low stakes, just good fun. But out of all of them, Octopath Traveller 2. I would give anything to be able to experience it again for the first time. I was quite literally depressed once I completed it. I was so upset and felt like I had such a void in my life and no game filled that void to the same extent. The characters and voice acting… it just sucked me in.

Those old school RPG tracks always do it for me. Even though I didn’t own a PS1, the music from those games is so soothing and reminiscent of simpler times. You mentioned Paper Mario TTYD, and I’d throw the original into the mix for cozy games.

I always love some cozy chill vibes, just a game you can play with zero stress. For me, the recent Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are big ones. Just running around the big open world just goofing off and doing whatever is a treat. Also, weirdly enough, Mystery Dungeon games can be chill for me, too. Yes, they can get stressful at times, but there's something therapeutic about just getting into the zone and maximizing runs and finding new stuff

Hi David! I really appreciate a list like this. Sometimes you just want to find a game and chill. As an older gamer (started by videogame journey with the Atari 2600 and NES), I've played my fair share of games where things were so frenetic that I was more stressed out than anything! (It can be fun at times, but wow, you can really burn out on games like that.)

Atelier Ryza definitely deserves to be on the list. I loved the first game and am currently playing the second in preparation of the third game. I did enjoy what I have played of Harvestella so far too. I don't have too much experience with the others, but I would love to try them (especially Octopath Traveller with the sequel coming soon).

I am Setsuna is another one that could fit on this list. The setting is quite cozy, taking place in a wintry fantasy world complete with cozy hearths and smoky fires. The gameplay is familiar with it's inspiration coming from Chrono Trigger. There is an old school world map, battles take place on the same screen that you explore, combination techs, three person party for battle, and beautiful soundtrack. It's a great game to play during these winter months while you are bundled up nice and warm in your home and the snow is falling outside your windows.

This is why I say Suikoden III is my favorite even though it isn't the best Suikoden. It's because it feels so laid back and comfy even though you're smack dab in the middle of a war. Most people probably hate the Thomas scenarios but I loved trying to make that team of scrubs OP as hell.

I cannot tell you how excited I was to see this pop up in my subscriptions box. I've needed these so much in my life as of late! I have Ryza and Harvestella sitting on the shelf, and I can't wait to dive into them. Thousand Arms has def piqued my interest, too. I have to say, Dark Cloud's townbuilding elements definitely come to mind when I think of unconventionally cozy games. I could fish in Norune for hours. On the modern end, my friends and I keep saying how we feel Fire Emblem Engage can qualify as cozy (on lower difficulties) bc it's such a hopeful, goofy story, the Somniel is so peaceful with plenty of side activities to do and everyone's decked out in casual clothing, etc.

Dragon Quest 7, 8 and 9. They can get challenging but they are just so inviting. I never found them to be anywhere near as hard as other SE games. Also, Rune Factory 4, Secret of Mana never really gets hard but I just want to live there. And finally Puzzle Quest. Those battles can actually be tough, but the gameplay is just so meditative. Once you get in the zone it's hard to put down and the overworld theme is so charming and relaxing.

Stardew Valley is a great choice for #1! Here are a few that I have played that gave me a chill vibe: Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure for the PSX/DS is a fun game with Cornet and her puppets, and it always felt chill because of the cute designs, fairy tale story, and how low the difficulty level is. Pokemon Conquest for the DS is a tactical RPG that is essentially Nobunaga's Ambition but Pokemon. Even though you're stopping a warlord and trying to bring peace to PokeJapan, it always felt really relaxing with how many ways you could put together an effective team and how friendly everyone is after you beat them. Avalon Code for the DS is an RPG focused around books. You use your magical book on NPCs and monsters alike, giving you access to their Code Scan and letting you change things via puzzles, like adding the Weakness trait to a tough monster or removing a sick NPC's Illness trait by slotting in the right counters. I played it a long time ago and never beat it, but maybe I should go back to it.
