This project can be as easy or as complicated as you desire. Depending on your choices, it can be made even cheaper and also scaled up to any size so long as you are not exceeding 1500 watts. If you do decide to scale it up, I recommend that you space out the lights a little more than what is shown in this video for better thermal management. I DO NOT take any responsibility if you burn your dwelling down or get electrocuted and die. This video is for entertainment purposes only.
If you do not posses the skills to solder or wire up circuits and can't do so safely, spend some extra money and purchase lamp sockets instead. The key here is to just remove the diffuser dome from the lights.

Great idea! A lot more hands on than what I did: I just bought one socket to four socket conversion kit and plugged two cool and two warm bulbs. Your technique blends the light much better but I’m afraid I might burn down the house if I tried your method 😂

Man, that is one of the best indoor growing videos I have seen in awhile! What a great idea! I was looking to enlarge my small indoor garden but didn’t want to spend a bunch on more lights. I have been looking at HLG and Chilled but man their lights can be expensive for what I need. This is exactly like what I wanted! Plus I love DIY and this is perfect for me!! Thanks so much for posting this! I can’t wait to start building my own! One thing to add, I wish you showed the wiring a bit closer/better. Also a better par reading (I know you did it at the end, but it was kinda fast and on a small screen). Please, please do updates on this light and how it has worked for you and your plants.

You can definitely grow plants with LED light bulbs at Home Depot. You want the cool white Spectrum for vegetative Cycles. In bloom, you'll want the warm white high cri bulbs.... higher color rendering index means more far red. The main drawback is efficiency. For large-scale grows, you'd do better to have an independent driver in slightly under power the diodes.

So quick question. When removing the diffuser from the lights, will they still operate properly in a humid (enclosed) environment? I’ve done this on a few bulbs, and just curious if the moisture will negatively affect the inside of the bulb. The bulbs were “suitable for damp locations” wondering if that has changed 😅 I’m using the 4-1 socket adapter. Turns one socket into 4 😃

I have a grow gowing with led bulbs. Dont take off the base and solder, just buy light fightings and wire them together. Much less compicated as long as you dont go above fitting ratings.

I have been doing similar thing with so called down lights 220 v that a have a very small and inexpensive fitting. Those lights are so light so you can use the electric wire to hang them and hold the wire with a clothing peg to easy adjust the distance to the plant as the plant grows. What is more interesting is the color spectrum of the light is it narrow or broad spectrum I don't know. According to the later spectrum theories you need more colors of the spectrum then previously assumed for ideal growth. Old theory is blue light for veg and red for flowering.

I was thinking of something fairly similar not too long ago! These led lights are getting cheap in bulk buys and a bunch of the led discs could be wired up in series parallel pairs on a sheet of aluminum to make a cheap quantum board style light. Coupled with a cheap led driver it would be great, but re using the stock drivers like you did is way cheaper with the only real drawback being bulk, but if one were dedicated enough you could make the stock drivers remote mount. Love it!

Technically they would be ran in parallel. You could run as many as you want. Just don’t exceed 10 amps or 1500watts or you’ll pop breakers.

@@toveryonder1115 that's actually about ideal actually. Typically you want minimum 30w per square foot for good growth and for ideal growth at least 50w per square foot. For a 4x8 area at 50w per square foot that's 1600 watts for that square footage. You can always get away with less but minimum 30/sq ft is a good general rule.

I just liked and subscribed because i had just bought grow lights and started suplementing with standard cree on the sides and thought for the price and quality, it might be the best overall light. So really great idea, and really like how youre showing how the best grow light components can be brought together cheaply and easily. It's good you're letting people know the safety risk of the elictrical side, but in removing the diffusing covers, isnt that a big risk for fire, arguably the bigger risk. Cree probably has it so they're not losing a lot of lumen on it, a flood light, with the cover and included reflector seems like the safer option. Also im using 2700k, 3000k, and 5000k hoping that they add colors on the warm and cold color spectrums, rather than subtract from the other end of the spectrum. Exmpl. RGB neutral is 2,2,2, warm is 3,2,2 cold is 2,2,3, rather than warm is 2,2,1, and cold is 1,2,2. Do you know aprox which is a better matching model?

Not sure what you mean by matching model. you don’t really need 3 color temperatures. Just some on the warm end and cool end. Cool white really should be 6000k or a little higher, but not many store bought leds are 6000k any more. They appear too blue for most people’s tastes. Slightly more heavy on the red side is fine for general growing though.

@@GrowingAnswers sure, two models of potentially (and simplified, and exaggerated) a neutral RGB might give a ratio 2,2,2 so two lumens of red to two lumens of green and blue. The first model is warming up by adding on the red side, for a warm light, and cooling by adding a blue lumen. The second model of how cree could manufacture warm and cool lights would be to subtract from the opposite end. If you add up RGB in both examples one you end up with 5,4,5(less green) the other 3,4,3(more green). So, and just made up ratios to kind of figure it out, by choosing bulbs on both ends of the spectrum, is the result actually more red/blue or more green. I bought a bunch of floods on the red and blue side, but agonized over it unnecessarily probably, betting it mostly washs. Thanks for putting your videos up. I'm not an expert at any of this, and really have no idea what really is or isn't safe, but those open LED chips do seem gutsy.

Very Nice Idea but keep in mind the Electronics and the LED's are maybe LIVE! I would suggest to put a Heat resistant clear coat on them. Also you need a grounding Wire on the Metal pan. Check your Breaker (Amp rating) and make sure your wires can handle the full current ( if you have thin wires the Breaker may not work and the wires can Catch fire). The Resistor in the Hot Lead of the LEDS works as fuse protecting the Electronics in the Lamp from catching fire, but they are not protecting your salvaged wire. In Germany we have 16A for our wall Sockets, in Countrys with 120VAC you may have something close to 32A (The small Red/Black wires definately cant handle that)! Becareful.

Keep in mind wire guage and amps it can safely handle. Don't touch what may be dangerous. Might help to have smoke detectors. I don't know about this build, but my local home improvement store sells "lampwire" by the foot for dirt cheap and it can handle way more watts than this little setup will take. If salvaging wires, opt for wires from appliances that use more amps than your intended setup. Wires taken from desk lamps will probably be fine for this set up. I will say that adding a fuse inline is a good idea. Would cover your bases if something fishy goes on with the bulbs.

I know you were trying to do this on the cheap, but I think it's much better to use screw in bulb bases. You can change out the bulbs to different temps easily. It may cost more, but it's way more versatile that way. And the average person that can't solder and do your project safely would be better off not messing with AC wiring. Thanks for the video

I just decided to use floodlights and remove all material that was on the LEDs and used aluminium tape to reflect light better. It increased light density 30% and 20W (true watt) lights costed only 8€ each. I used two 20W and one 50W floodlight 4000K with two full spectrum 100W COB LED light. 50W floodlight was only 20€ and the COB LEDs 75€ each plus better fans 28€ of total for the both units. I'm getting something like 20 000 Lux at 80 cm distance. Still bretty weak compared to sun with 100 000 Lux at half meter of the window.

Hmm. I tested it again with reflection material on every side and now I got 27K Lux and 33 Lux where the soil start. It may a bit more than I need. Almost 1K umol/s per square meter. I have been running a year without all sides covered. I feel now a bit stupid. I had only three sides covered because I tought it does not matter because there was a wall at the back.

1st, there’s a disclaimer in the description. 2nd, there shouldn’t be any danger as long as it’s crafted with a basic understanding of electrical safety. Plenty of electronics can be considered “unsafe” when you look inside. 3rd, it wouldn’t be a $10 light if yuh had to purchase sockets or housings. 4th, the point here is to get the diodes close together so that it acts more as a single light source that can be placed closer to smaller plants. You can’t do that by using multiple clamp lights. It’s suppose to be a cheap and fun little project. Personally I would not have made this, this way for myself. This was just something cheap and unique that works. I’m actually still using it for my banana tree and it’s growing a lot better now. Having said that, this video is actually just a stepping stone to another pre-planned project.

I could have safely made this as a child, but I can say this is safe after high school, and college for electronics. If it started a fire, it would be because the person making it was a fool who can't follow directions that I could at 5 years old. @@GrowingAnswers Thanks for the video. I just built my own plant shelf for 20 bucks and bought a clamp done with a 6500K bulb for 5 bucks. Was thinking of buying another two, and a add another 6500K and a 3000K one and hang them on the shelf and found confirmation my logic is right. Won't be doing what you are doing though as I'm not familiar with electrics and I like the mobility clamp domes give you. Not growing basil here, just trying to help my small urban jungle live well over the winter. Won't be able to keep them on the window sill as the radiator is there, also the room in West oriented.

Nice tutorial on Screw In Leds as grow lights, and kudos to your engineering, but, Dude, you took something simple and safe and desconstructed it into something complicated and potentially flammable. Why not spend an extra $4 and buy a four into one light fixture off Ebay and simply screw in the lamps without the globes-super clean setup. Plus this looks like it was beaten with the black ugly stick, I couldn't bear opening my tent to see this hanging...

Removing the dome from these LED lights is very unsafe. Most of these lights have a non isolated power supply. Did you check these for isolation???

I won't mock the good old day led grow lights, iv used them on every thing from microgreen crops to chilli and bell pepper plants, hell I even have 2 on my planted aquarium, 6500k cool whit, is what i used tho, high in growth end f the scale , 2700k is better for makeing plants bloom flowers like on chilli and bell peppers ,

Unless the metal or aluminized sheet is textured. Diffused light is better than directly reflected light. So technically yes, white is better than a mirror or shiny metal. But grow tents are made with textured Mylar for a reason. It’s reflecting diffused light the same as white, but does it better by a small margin. A pie tin has pleated edges which act as diffusion.

Also it depends on your uses of the light and reflection. Check out MiGRO's recent video comparing the 2 reflection types and the PAR relating the two. Essentially on a top-down setting (like most tents) the wide reflection of whites cause a PAR loss because some light gets reflected back upward away from plants. If you're using top-downs with side-lined lights, then yeah white is better.

check aliexpress for 220v (110v) led cobs don't get the 50w version it gets way too hot get a lot of 20w cobs and put them on a heatsink with thermal silicone the new version doesn't even require soldering they sell them in 20 30 and 50 6500k and warm white YXO Yuxinou? is the brand name I don't mind the open connections but they also sell covers for the cobs but I never tried them myself don't want to restrict the light and heat. one cob is like 2 bucks greetings from Germany

Don't , these cheap cobs are full of defective leds. Spend a little extra and get good ones from a brand like cree or luminus.

I am a ham radio operator with 30 years of expererience of these issues. Reading the history it looks that experience and beeing causious is overated. Be sefe and know what yo u are doing.
