Thanks! That was beautiful! Some facts from native russian guy: 1. Smuglianka - the love story between Russian guy and Moldovan girl. She becomes his "fighting girlfriend" in the end. This term in russian means teammate girl who is a trusted friend at first and girlfriend at second. Girl who follows you in fire, storm and war and you can trust her. There is a tank T-34 named "Fighting Girlfriend" in honor of Mariya Oktyabarskaya - USSR tankist Hero (highest battle achievement) 2. There is a hidden meaning for song Katyusha. There is a weapon called Katyusha (BM-13 artillery) which gave a big advatage in WWII to USSR forces. Song lyrics can be open out like a message to enemy with all the revenge and pain back and also a supportive message to a soldier. Katyusha was personified as "USSR women anger and support" from rear. 3. Kalinka - just a folk song about Russian nature and a guy had a crush on a girl. It's more like a state of your soul and heart deep in love. 4. The real name of this song is "Korobushka" which means "little treasure box". A song about love again. (yeah Wide Russian Soul). Guy presented a lot of beautiful gifts to a girl from his "Korobushka" but she didn't take anything except little cheap ring which symbolises her pure love to him. 5. Polyushko-polye is a song about USSR Red Army Heroes moving to the war against nazi's to defend beautiful Russian girls and nature. They ready to die and they know they can stand. They ask for a supportive loud song from girls, not tears. They want everybody to stay strong. 6. Everything is right. This song symbolises a great danger ahead. 7. This song is not supposed to be very depressive and symbolises "passing the trial" which is unbearable, hard and dangerous.But you can hear the powerful bass voice which is Russian Man hidden power that makes him invincible in any deadly situation and makes him a "One Man army". 8. Berizoka is a really old song connected with old rites. There is a rumor that this is a spell actually. So be carefull. It's not a dangerous or harmful spell, but you know, never make fun of it. 9. Oi, Moroz, Moroz (Oh, Frost, Frost) is not only a drinking a song. Man asks Frost (Yeah, like a real man with a real man) to be more soft. Because guy wants to get home faster to be closer to his jealousy wife who waits him for some time. And it's like a conversation between this Man and Frost. So yeah you can still hear drunk Russians singing this song even youngers! 10. Army song about Russian warriors spirit.

На самом деле текст песни зародился до ВОВ, и в нём изначально говорилось о временах гражданской войны. Но по каким-то причинам текст был отложен в дальний ящик, и вспомнили о нём как раз уже во времена войны с нацисткой Германией, в связи с чем она и стала ассоциироваться именно с ВОВ, а не с гражданкой. Ну и всем известный фильм уже окончательно определил эту песню в разряд периода Великой отечественной. Сам был удивлён, когда узнал об этом)

I love Russian folk songs and music by Russian composers. A lot of the time, there's such a beautiful melancholic feel to them. I refer to it in German as "die schwere russische Seele" (the heavy Russian soul, as in gloomy/melancholic). Anyway, well done, the transitions from one song to the next are so seamless!

It's mostly because Russia has large destance between cities and settlements filled with fields, plains and swamps, and this feel when you stay at the edge of road and see nothing but fields or wild forest is simultaneously inspiring and melancholic. Check lyrics, this songs almost always about love\fields and freedom\war\sorrow. As we know, many people of art inspires by nature, so this tipe of nature builds that mood. When you feel yourself free but so tiny and lonely (english is not my native)

The man on the thumbnail is not a Russian, by the way. He is in fact a German singer, called ''Ivan Rebroff'' (It's his alias...) He passed away, unfortunately, but was a very beloved and skillful performer of Russian music. He was as close to being Russian as you can get without being a Russian. His German song ''Es steht ein Soldat am Wolgastrand'' about a Russian soldier's homesickness is one of his most well known pieces. He also frequently performed ''Polyushko Polye'', a Russian folk song. I highly recommend giving both performances a listen.
