The creator must have been on drugs when he design the villains
@michaelpalmieri733511 ай бұрын
@@elchompi12rewind27 Actually, Chester Gould may have been inspired by a lot of criminals who had nicknames based on their physical appearance. For example, there was Al Capone, who was called "Scarface" because of a scar on his face that he received in a knife fight with a man whose sister Capone had made lewd remarks to. Then there was Charles "Pretty Boy" Floyd, who was a rather handsome guy. I think it was a prostitute or a Madam (one who runs a house of prostitution) who gave Floyd that name. The story goes that this woman, enamored by his good looks, came on to him, saying "I want you for myself, pretty boy." Ironically, Floyd hated the name. Another criminal who detested his nickname was George "Baby Face" Nelson. His real name was Lester M. Gillis, but he rejected it as "sissy," preferring to be called "Big George" Nelson, which was a rather ridiculous name since he was very short. His fellow crooks called him "Baby Face" Nelson (usually when he wasn't around to hear it) because of his infantile looking face. Despite his child-like appearance, Nelson was a very violent and brutal thug with a ferocious temper, who would grab for his gun on the slightest provocation. In short, Chester Gould most probably had these felonious fellows in mind when he created his "rogues gallery" of crooks who looked so "grotesque," as the narrator of this video calls them.

I absolutely love it Mr Rogues. What I like about Dick Tracy is that he has a lot more members of his rogues gallery than even Batman's villains. Some of them have actually gone straight and never returned to crime anymore. In rare cases, they even help Dick Tracy. I hope you will do more Dick Tracy videos with in depth views.

Great video! I love the random villains of Dick Tracy and it's amazing how many villains in these stories ended up dead. My favourite Dick Tracy villain is a character called Spots who has perhaps the weirdest design of all (although there is always a villain that is stranger in Dick Tracy stories it seems).

As for The Pouch, I think Chester Gould wanted to show that the Comics Code Authority was run by a bunch of idiots.
@astrocitizen2 жыл бұрын
It certainly wasn't drugs. From all accounts, Gould was a straight shooter, a borderline member of the REEFER MADNESS generation. This sadly meant he had a hard time "reading the room" if you will as the social unrest of the Sixties and Seventies occurred. While he rarely shied away from stories about corrupt authorities, he wasn't exactly in love with the hippies and protestors either. Even the police's undercover agent, Groovy Grove, was as pro-establishment as the rest of the cast.

The villains from DICK TRACY started out as a bunch of thuggish -- albeit distinctively so -- criminals but eventually veered into odd looking before the Grotesques became official with the likes of Little Face, BB Eyes, and the eventual Big Three -- Flattop, Pruneface, and The Brow. Two characters that have been memorable to me are: 1) The Blank, a heavily scarred man who covered his face with a special mask to appear faceless. He then hunted down and murdered his old gang members in what I think was Chester Gould making commentary on the old pulp magazine vigilantes like The Shadow and The Spider. 2) Professor Emirc, a bald little crackpot inventor who devised gadgets to help crooks, such as a pocket-sized acetylene torch for opening safes. I kind of thought he looked like Dr. Sivana from the old Captain Marvel comics. MRS. PRUNEFACE: Sadly, I've seen photos of people, including women, badly burned on their face and the resultant looks are very much in line with how Pruneface's better half wound up. HAF'N'HAF: The melted candle comment reminded me that I've kind of thought of Haf'n'Haf as looking like if, instead of Egghead, Vincent Price (HOUSE OF WAX) had played Two-Face on the live action BATMAN show. That would've been neat to see.

One of the reason Tracy had such a huge gallery of rogues is just due to the series' longevity and the fact that Tracy--a hero with a gun, often ended up killing his foes, although like early Batman villains most of them accidentally killed themselves in often karmic ways in their attempts to elude or kill him.
