I grew up on Dick Tracy. He was one of my Dad's favorite characters when he was a kid. He kept a load of his old books and strips in pretty decent condition by the time I came around, as well as some tapes of the cartoon. He's one of the main reasons (along with the cartoon C.O.P.S. and my aunt in DC Metro) I wound up going into law enforcement myself. The movie came out at the perfect time in my childhood. Also loved the NES and Genesis games.

With regard to Dick Tracy's animation appearances you forgot to mention that a series of shorts were produced that appeared as part of a Saturday morning TV series in the early 70's called Archie's TV funnies that also featured shorts from Moon Mullins and Broom Hilda and others and was hosted by the characters from Archie comics who had already had several animated TV shows prior to this. Finding that series, however is almost impossible, unless you happen to run into someone that has a "collector's copy" and by collectors copy I mean, of course a bootleg copy that was recorded, probably originally on Betamax or VHS when the show was run in syndication after such machines were available.

I seem to recall Dick Tracey had these flying garbage can like things. They were single person flying vehicles that Tracy and his team could use to get to crime scenes and such. Or did I just imagine those? Just a note on how popular Dick Tracey was. Chester Gould appeared on What's My Line in (I think) the mid 50's. The host, John Daly (a seasoned ABC reporter) crowed after Gould's occupation had been revealed because he said he knew what was going to happen in the next 3 days of comic strips. That clip is on KZbin somewhere. I highly recommend it. Actually, I recommend What's My Line in general.
