For this list, we’ll be looking mostly at direct sequels that saved franchises by building upon what came before and enhancing it in nearly every way. Devil May Cry 3. Seriously, how did you leave it out? It took everything that had been great about the original game and cranked it up to 111, revamping the whole series from that point on! DMC2 nearly killed the series, but DMC3 was the shot of pure adrenaline and badassitude needed to shoot it straight back to the stop of the stylish action genre!

I remember playing Arkham Asylum in 2009 and being blown away by how much of a masterpiece it was. Two years later, we got Arkham City, and it was a thousand times better. It's one of the best sequels I've ever had the honour of playing

Assassins Creed 2 and Batman Arkham City are two prime examples of sequels improving on their predecessors. Assassins Creed 2 has more tools, two hidden blades, a renovations system, lots of well liked side characters, customization, using hiding places like haystacks for assassinations, etc. Batman Arkham City has a lot of skills to unlock like breaking weapons, around double the gadgets, side missions that expand on Batman's rogue's gallery, faster combat, more takedown opportunities, etc.

I wasn't a real gamer till 2008. When I first played the demo for Mass Effect 2 in high school I was completely blown away. I played it countless times. When I finally bought the game and played it, it was the first time I truly fell in love with a video game. I must've replayed it 30 times back then. That's the impact ME2 had on people, at least for me. One of the most compelling gaming experiences I've ever had

Surpised they didn't go for the Nintendo four peat and had Zelda 3 in there as well as at least an honorable mention since it returned zelda to the top down view of the original while including a second map with new dungeons and items that would become main stasy of the series like the hookshot, elemental rods and pieces of hearts with new minigames.

There’s also Warcraft 2, Diablo 2, Zelda A Link to the Past, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Half Life 2, Ratchet and Clank Going Commando, Left 4 Dead 2, Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door and God of War 3.

I think one of the reasons this pattern is more common in gaming than other media is that it’s possible to have an innovative first entry in a series that has some rough edges that can be smoothed out in the next installment.

A few others: Sly 2 -gave the series more of an identity from the standard 3D platformer. Jak 2 - the first games controls and world were great but 2 spiced it up to help differentiate from the competition. Ratchet and Clank 2: greatly improved weapons by adding the ability for them to level up, made more expansive side quests and improved health and armor. Kingdom Hearts 2: better improved movement and combat options. Banjo-Tooie: a direct sequel that improved upon its predecessor (you either love or hate the concept). Super Smash bros Melee: expanded upon the original cast while adding new faces, gave more modes, added collectibles and highly improved sound design from the original.

I'm probably one of the few people who think that ME2 has the weakest combat in the trilogy, at least on insanity. I played through the original versions multiple times and the legendary edition recently and still think it's 3 > 1 > 2 on the highest difficulty. 1 does have bad hit detection and samey weapons especially in the original version; but you can spam powers, swap and customize equipment even during combat, and use biotics against shielded enemies. Enemies feel like invincible tanks on insanity in ME2 given that they generally don't react to being hit by anything until their health bar is showing and they're almost dead anyway. Lastly, you have the least amount of powers to work with. ME2 is still great, though, and in some aspects is the best in the series (squadmates, stakes, side missions, and heavy weapons).

Also Tomb Raider 2. And I enjoyed more Mass Effect 1 from the Remastered trilogy, its world and story had a much better impact in me. I didn't like much the person-centered relationships in ME2, I got tired pretty fast

Titanfall 2 should've definitely been up here! It actually provided more than a real story mode: it was a fully fleshed out campaign that stands as one of the best in the FPS genre! It improved on the multiplayer significantly, controls, balancing, and again, the story mode of it was incredible. EA screwed up its release because it should've sold 10+ million but it's still an amazing game nonetheless.

Super Metroid is when the series got good. The first two games suck. It feels so weird to play the NES version of Metroid after playing Zero Mission. Zero Mission has better controls. Pokemon Gold & Silver improved what made the original game good. Going up against the protagonist in the original game is awesome. The world in Borderlands 2 is called Pandora? Doesn't look like a tropical forest with tall blue people. Guns guns and more guns. Gunception. I actually thought Super Mario Bros 3 was a SNES exclusive. I didn't know it was originally an NES game. Assassin's Creed 1 kind of sucked. Ezio could swim. Trust us it was a big deal. I guess Altair was a vampire. Requiescat in pace. A Link to the Past and Tears of the Kingdom should be on this list.

AC2 has some downgrades too. Combat is a major one. AC1 controls are just as accurate as AC2. Altaïr is more subtle but still a great character. The AC1 world is less colourful but still very interesting and fun.
