Except it isn't George Best never played at a World Cup nor even in the qualifiers for 82 he last played for them in 1977. he was only 12 in 1958 so wasn't involved there either. Northern Ireland should have qualified for 66 but conceded a late equaliser to Albania where the win would have put them in a neutral playoff v Switzerland, In 70 the Soviet Union beat them while in 74 Bulgaria and Portugal both finished ahead.

El Salvador both World Cup were marred by War/Civil War and corruption. The 1982 World they showed up just a few days before the first game, so they couldn't train nor acclimate to the climate. They also didn't even have a full squad. So it is a bit unfair.

what a great list of small countries here with distinctly interesting cultures who deserved to be in at least one of the recent world cups that have just come and gone. wales have been at qatar 2022, but they should have been in at least one world cup prior to that. ashley williams, sam vokes, andy king, hal robson kanu, ched evans and many others that featured in that heroic semi final run at euro 2016 should have been at russia 2018, but for biased refereeing in the world cup qualifiers that saw players banned for at least two games. jamaica should have been at qatar 2022 so that leon bailey, michail antonio, andre gray, shamar nicholson, darren mattocks, wes morgan, ravel morrison and many players from the side that reached the semi final of the 2019 concacaf gold cup could feature for the reggae boyz. israel should have been in at least one of both 2014 and 2022 world cups; and either euro 2020 or 2024 so that yossi benayoun, tal ben haim, tomer hemed, nir bitton, manor solomon, eran zahavi, shon weissman and many others could feature for the team, but they were screwed in qualifying by biased officials on the pitch. trinidad & tobago should have been there too so that russia 2018 would have at least three predominantly black teams that are not from europe or south america; besides senegal and nigeria. other countries that should have been in some of the recent world cups that have come and gone include ukraine, china, DR congo, uzbekistan and azebaijan at russia 2018. angola should have been at brazil 2014 with a colourful addidas kit and players like igor vetokele and gesenric kusunga among the players in the team. haiti, thaiti, georgia, zambia, guatemala, UAE, and bolivia should have been at qatar 2022 as should have ivory coast and chile on the back of their continental triumphs in 2015; and italy on the back of their euro 2020 success. hope el salvador, kuwait, togo, hungary, cape verde, solomon islands, new zealand and norway return again in 2026. it would have been even bittersweet if the format had stayed unchanged after qatar 2022 so that morocco or egypt could have the 2026 world cup, greece would have 2030 and maybe a united ireland hosting the world cup.
