Probably has to do with the death toll (in percentage with adjustments made to equalize the populations) is higher this time and the cascading effects have not even really begun to be calculated ot felt. (As someone living in America currently. I would also like to add the violent near-destruction of our government, the lingering effects of a rising neo-Nazi faction in our country, and a series of the deadliest mass shootings in American history, and now the wholesale slaughter of Ukrainians to the list of unmitigated joys of the 2020s.)

@@whaleymom76this is wildly inaccurate. The Spanish flu killed 50 million out of less than a 2 billion world population. Those included otherwise healthy people in their 20s & 30s. Covid killed 7 million out of almost 8 billion, mostly elderly or those with comorbidities. Not to mention the hyperbolic political statements at the end of your post.

All of my grandparents were born or toddlers during 1918’s Spanish Flu pandemic. They grew up during the Depression and my maternal grandfather volunteered for the Navy, leaving my grandmother and their twin daughters, born in 1941, and my grandmother was pregnant with my mother, born in 1945. My mother and father both come from very poor Irish immigrants- my mother’s side were from Strokestown, County Roscommon, one of the worst suffering during the Famine. My mother died in 2021 and two grandchildren were born in 2021. Life goes on, through pandemics, wars, economic depressions. Nothing lasts forever, even really crap years that seem to bring out the worst in humanity.

FTR, according to the currently accepted modern history records, Prohibition was the end result of what began as the Temperance Movement in the mid-1800s (This time period is specific to America. There were various Temperance movements in various countries over the span of centuries. I only use the American timeline because Prohibition, the Volstead Act-this is the actual name of the law that detailed the specific restrictions during Prohibition, and the rise of wide spread, large scale, organized crime on a national level that was spawned by Prohibition are laws and situations specific to America in this time period. As an amusing side note, in an interesting nugget of timing, cocaine was removed from Coca-Cola about 6 months before the Stock Market crashed. I can't prove causation, but...

Where I am sitting now [Midlands UK] a mere 12,000 Years ago was under ½ mile thick Ice Sheet. I kid you not Mammoth Lake nearby. All these **_Measures_** proposed to Halt or Reverse it are pathetic and will not make the slightest difference' The most stupid of all is halting what are now very efficient clean ICE Cars and replacing them with Dirty Electric that only the most wealthy can afford initially and have off road/Garage parking to enable them to recharge overnight (for a full recharge up to several days) Quite honestly I see this as a way to Tax the average person for the benefit of the wealthy who running an EV pay no Road Tax/Fuel Tax and even get a Government Grant when purchasing one. There is a £34 Billion Black Hole set to appear in the future and I dread the future for our Children/Grandchildren after the gigantic **-astronomical-** costs Covid19 has caused. Wait until 98% efficient Gas Boilers are prohibited and have to spend £15-20k on a Heat pump that is most **-useless-** inefficient in the Winter [cold] Months when little or no Solar Power and on a still day Zero Wind Power. @celticlass8573
@celticlass8573 2 жыл бұрын
@Fascinating Facts Literally no vaccine is a cure. That isn't the intention. The Covid vaccines' primary focus is to reduce the severity of the symptoms for people infected, yes, which is a worthy goal. However, it's thoroughly erroneous to say that the vaccines have no affect on the spread of the virus. Vaccinated people have a much higher immunity than those who are unvaccinated, higher even than people who have been infected and survived. The replication you mention is why we have so many new variations of the virus, and each person who the virus has a chance to get a foot-hold in, is a petri dish to create yet another strain. If everyone who could get the vaccine did, it would vastly diminish the possible hosts for the virus to mutate in. That's how the "Spanish" Influenza finally petered out--so many people who survived, had developed immunity to it, that it had little chance to replicate.
@jonnunn4196
@jonnunn4196 2 жыл бұрын
Traditionally herd immunity is from all sources; not just those that got vaccinated but also those unfortunate enough to get covid for real. This is complicated by similar to the flu, covid mutates and also similar to the common cold that the level of antibodies drops over time and so there's a decent chance of catching it in a few months. The UK Guardian though recently had a paper on a UK study where people volunteered to be regularly exposed to Covid; those that never tested positive had T-cell count spikes shortly after exposure even with continuing to test negative for Covid itself.
@celticlass8573
@celticlass8573 2 жыл бұрын
@Fascinating Facts Actually, what you said is that the vaccines don't stop someone from spreading the virus, that vaccinated people "spread it all the same" which is false as it's incomplete information. Those with immunity spread it much less, because the virus has much less of a chance to get enough of a foot-hold, ie can duplicate itself enough to make the host highly contagious. Also, perhaps it's different where you live, but here they report the new cases as vaccinated vs unvaccinated numbers, and the vaccinated are consistently much, much lower.

In the 80s I lived in Montana on a cattle ranch. Out of nowhere, it decided to snow in the middle of summer. It was crazy. Nobody had feed for their cattle as they were in a grazing season. We had a large enough ranch that we didn't really see to many losses. We had enough feed to hold us over. But other ranches didn't fair so well. It really drove home for me how fragile our food chain and supply system really is. We lose our agriculture. We lose everything.

@Dungeon Master I actually did get Covid last year, I just didn't want to let the pandemic dominate my life. I understand that last year was a bad year economically for billions of people, if not every person in the world, but if you choose to let one event dominate your life, than of course people are going to be miserable. My sister lived in Africa during most of the pandemic and the people there didn't obsess over it. They weren't scared on this disease like the media is, they treated it like every other disease they've faced and continued on life like they usually did.

@Philip Greenwald Agree! People always think that the worst years are the ones they personally experience, which is understandable, but we have a much better structure for propping up society now than the turn of the century era even, where there weren't the social services, doctors, insurance agents and so on, set up to intervene after disasters. People who volunteer for programs like doctors without borders are really the unsung, almost unnoticed heros of our age...they save thousands who would certainly die horrible deaths without aid...
