As an African child raised in various African countries, I can assure you Simon that the stories of Mansa Sundjata Keïta and Mansa Musa endure to this day. We read about them, sing of them, are taught about them, watched cartoons, dramas and plays about them. You should really do a Biographics on the Epic of Sundjata. He was extraordinary even before birth, or so the legend goes.

African colonisation didn’t start until the 1880s which by then slavery was outlawed by the major powers on the Atlantic. The only thing you can claim is the couple of small European trading enclaves around the coasts or the small expansion into Algeria by the French. Slavery wasn’t the catalyst for colonialism rather the resources.

Mansa Abubakar must have made it to the other side and one archaeological evidence is the Olmec Statues unearthed in South America of medieval Malian soldiers complete with their traditional helmets. Technology, africans have been mining since "pre historic" times, so it may have been a preference/familiarity to mining, that could have been the reason. At some points the emperors also owned some of the salt mines in Northern West Africa. So the trade could have been for diplomatic reasons. Since the relationship between the manding and berbers have been very volitile throughout history. Like ancient raid of manding settlements, and the almohavids and marrocan attacks on Ghana and Songhai.

@@DontreadPimpBoy Indeed - but by the time you go THIS far back in history, let alone trying to compare across spans of hundreds of years between them all, measuring absolute wealth becomes somewhat meaningless. However, given one of the simplest ways to do such a comparison is simply to compare how much of total world wealth was controlled by a single person at that point in time, Musa is believed to be #1. Arguably, given improvements in productivity, how much you get per dollar, and the wonders of modern technology, Bezos (or Putin or one of those others speculated to be wealthier) is the richest person to ever live. Even though he could buy a lot less gold, he'd get a lot more for the gold equivalents he does control :)

​@Dj_M1 I think OP means that African history itself is important, not this one small (and you're dead right, unimportant and easily disputed) aspect of it. Aside from the benefits to Africans living there today to be able to chart their own pre-colonial history. For a lot of people of African descent, who's link to their lineage and history were lost when they were sold and scattered, it's arguably very important to know that they even have a history beyond that of slavery. Let alone how grand a history that is. I think it's fairly important to those of us raised in the Western cultures too. For those who've grown up only knowing Africa as an impoverished continent, it's important to understand what attracted the invaders there in the first place. Else people continue believing the 'we went to bring them to God and clothe them decently, purely as an act of kindness' propaganda. We went to take what they had, much of Europe's inherited wealth has its beginnings in the organised gang-rape of Africa.

Actually there is archaeological evidence that a least some of those Mali sailors reached the new world. Columbus found gold tipped arrow and spear heads in the Caribbean when he first arrived. He also found small tribes of natives who looked and dressed identical to west Africans.
