In this comprehensive test and review, I'm sharing my experience with the 100Balance BMS. I saw this online and wanted it in my garage for testing. This Daly-style BMS has a 1A active balancer, Bluetooth and Wifi, RS485 and CAN communication for your inverter and it can handle 100A. First thing which came to my mind was: 'Do we have a JK competitor here?' All the specs and features looked good, but once I started testing it, it quickly came clear, that there is only on BMS-King...

Ok, update here. Been running my 60A 100 Balance BMS now for a couple weeks, with apparently the latest firmware. It active balances while both discharging and charging when the cells are above 3.7V (my setting). For my first BMS, it has been running very well. I have the high voltage protect setting at 4.1V, I believe. Above 4.05V for all the cells (52.65V), it complains about "Cell voltage level high 1" I have my Victron 150/45 MPPT Bulk/Absorb at 52.65V and Float at 52V (54.6V is fully charged for a 13S Li-Ion battery), so according to the BMS, that's like at a 95% SOC. I could reset the BMS to show 52.65V as 100%

Cell Volt Hi Level 1 triggers @0.1V below the high voltage cell disconnect setting and stops balancing at this point. Balancing will remain off until the Level 1 alarm is reset. I've complained about this bug months ago. They refuse to change it, stating that the BMS cannot monitor Hi Level 2 disconnect voltage while simultaneously balancing and that enabling this option would result in high voltage overshooting the disconnect voltage and possible cell damage. They claim that JK is known for cell damage because of this feature being enabled, I call BS. It also will only balance while charging. If Hi L1 is triggered and charge is removed, it will never resume balancing even if the L1 alarm is reset. Another bug I've found that they refuse to correct (at least in the 4S-8S version) is that if any changes are made to the default high voltage disconnect limit voltage of 3.6V, the BMS will reset to default after some time, and display a default settings warning nag asking if you would like to make changes. As long as you leave the high voltage disconnect limit voltage at the default 3.6V, you can change the rest of the settings without triggering the default reset or nag message. And one more bug I've found, if you change the default password, none of the individual cell voltages will be displayed on the main display screen until the password is entered. If you leave the password at default or change it back to default, the individual cell voltages will remain. So much potential, it's unfortunate that Daly engineers have their blinders on...

Oh, wow, thanks a lot for sharing. That is indeed quite concerning and not great. I will contact them again after Easter and see what I can do in terms of software improvements. The voltage will not overshoot and damage the cells. That can never happen while balancing. This software seems to be much worse than I have tested it. Do you use the Daly or the 100Balance BMS?

BTW, Andy, this BMS also phones home WITHOUT registering an account or connecting to WiFi. They had a server outage and the app would display errors every time it was unsuccessful at contacting the server, like every three seconds, which made the app unusable until they fixed the server issue. Makes me wonder what data they are collecting...
@shawnd567
@shawnd567 5 ай бұрын
I also contacted them about this. I bought the USB cable and raised the vol 1 high voltage to 3.6. This has helped tremendously. Unfortunately if I get a runner, it'll hit 3.6v and not turn balance back on until 3.45v You cannot change that setting on the computer. Mine balances while charging and discharging. So I think you're wrong that it only balances while charging.

I hope the manufacturer addresses the issues with this product, most importantly the Active Balancing behavior, as I believe it to be unique solution for those in need of a well protected (housed) BMS with Active Balancing that can be used in both 4S and 8S configurations. Unless I am mistaken, the enclosed Jk BMS with AB is only available in a minimum 8S version. I live in the tropics and build solar electric boats, and unfortunately our environment can be quite hard on electronics due to the salt air, condensation, electrolysis of dissimilar metals, geckos, etc.., so a waterproof/resistant BMS in a sealed enclosure would be most ideal.
@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 4 ай бұрын
They won't. I had a lengthy discussion with them, and they are happy with their current design and won't change it. The problem with sealed BMS or electronics is heat dissipation. You probably have to build your own enclosure and ensure sufficient cooling. I want one of these electric boats, Will! They look amazing!
@kauaislash5
@kauaislash5 4 ай бұрын
Bummer to hear that. Thanks for the heads up. I will have to go a different route then. No doubt heat is the enemy, but at least in those situations components can often be replaced. Corrosion damage from salty condensation by comparison, is a total killer. Might experiment with thermally conductive silicone polymer encapsulate next build. I suspect most standard BMS boards leave the factory with only a light coating of oil. Thanks for the kind words on the boats. You should build one for yourself! Old boats in need of repurposing are plentiful, and if you like to spend time relaxing on the water, doing so using the sun while cruising along to the sound of trickling water is such a great way to experience it. Of course if you prefer to go fast, you’ll need some big batteries and a lot of solar!

Andy, I learned something while tinkering today - When you put a small fan on the passive balancer resistors the rate at which they bleed balance vastly improves - I mean 2 or 3 fold - I guess surface mounting resistors run hot and their resistance really ramps up making them bleed far less - I expected some improvement but it was way beyond expectation - easily capable of keeping large 100a cells in balance - I used a small 5 v fan.

Passive balancer...🤔
@jbuszkie
@jbuszkie 6 ай бұрын
I'm sorry but that cannot be true. Passive resistors don't change that much with temperature. Typical thin film resistors have a TCR in the 100s of PPM. Even if it was 500PPM (parts per million) a 100C temperature rise would only increase the resistance by 5% which the current would only decrease by 5%. not 200% to 300%. what you might be seeing is the BMS monitoring the temp of those resistors and it turns them on or off based the temp. So a small fan will keep them cooler so the BMS will keep them "on" continuously vs cycling them on and off due to temperature.

I completely agree with your assessment Andy. I've been using the Daly BMS for a while now with the wifi and it works great. This new BMS seems to be a carbon copy of the bigger Dalys with a few minor differences. Daly has a new S series BMS which is supposed to be high current...can do up to 500A discharge and 250A charge. Would love to see your review on that one if you ever get your hands on one. One of the things I find Daly has missed in previous BMS generations and this new 100 series as well, is a high voltage and low voltage recovery setting similar to what the JK has. I think if Daly could incorporate that feature into their products, work out a few bugs and improve their documentation, they could increase their competitiveness.

I have several 250A Daly BMS here but had no support from them in terms of setting them up correctly. They Wifi implementation didn't work at the time and nobody seemed to know how to set it up. So they are still resting in their original boxes. They promised to be able to change the FW quickly as per customer needs, so I got excited and wanted to test their new BSM out. Daly for the win, you know... but the lack of support and not knowing when I asked questions... A huge company should be at the forefront. Well, JK clearly too the lead here!

Its good practice to use a laptop on battery power o ly when connecting to inverters, BMS's, protection relays or any other equipment that can crate a path to ground. We had it with victron where it blew the usb port on the laptop becuase it was powered by the inverter itself. We also had a 1.2MW central inverter can bus fried by connecting to the diagnostic port while the laptop was plugged in. Since then, I carry a small inverter in the van to have completely separate 230V suplly for the laptop.

Daly always had have this logic issue when it comes to triggering the balancer. I really do not understand why they start a new brand and still have the same issues as with their old brand. I think Daly owes a logic update to all of their balancers instead of founding a new brand! Shame on you daly! @Andy: Could you please measure the voltage of the whole battery pack "behind" the BMS and compare this with the voltage shown by the BMS. My Daly BMS (for a 4S LFP-System) has a huge difference of more than 0.8 V (with no load or charge being connected) due to very low quality MOSFEDs build in. That is so disappointing. Daly and @100balanceBMS should really take care of their quality control management. I am slowly exchanging all my Daly BMSes with JK BMSs. Daly is truly a victim of their own success. They did not took care of production quality and improvements of their products. It is a really big disappointment that they cannot take care of their product quality themselves before publicing a new product.

Hey @Andy 43:50 Just so you know… to be „safe“ from all these chinese servers controlling and sucking all your info from Local Network you can setup a secondary WiFi that has isolated clients as well so that these devices can’t talk to other stuff in your network (separate range of IPs and FW between them) and not even to eachother on the same network. For autodiscover stuff you can repeat the broadcasts on the other „main“ network too. Ofc the remaining problem is a chinese server controlling your overvoltage and overheating settings in something that some people have at their basement of their wooden home… If you need any tips or assistance with all that let me know. You should try Hibms. I use them support is good. As for remote data, well I get around that by having my own hardware which is never down, doesn't fake data and keeps it local. Does the same thing too. At the mo I have this for just a few devices, but shall be expanding, in fact I'm making what I'm calling "the node" which is a "featured" display and interactive device that pulls data from inverters and battery and solar. I've also developed a 'smart array' controller. This is on a back burner as the node Is taking more of time. BMS systems do need to come some way and be standardised. As I have to code for each type, because they want to use different keys. Some are copied... China ey? Keep up the good work.

When you set it 3.65V and it displays 3.7V, is it setting the voltage to 3.65V but rounding the display to 3.7V? Or, worse, is it taking your input of 3.65V, rounding it to 3.7V as the setting (too high of a voltage for LFP) and then displaying the actual setting of 3.7V. That would be very bad.

Im still confused, is it okay if the active balancer is continuously on or not? Because i have seen a lot of set ups that has BMS connected in parallel with active balancers. Or it only needs to turn on at specific cell voltage like 3.5v. And what BMS brand has that function? That the active balancer will only turn on at a preset voltage (maybe 3.5v) Thanks Andy for your time checking on my comment.

The balancer on every BMS only works above a certain voltage which can be adjusted in the settings. Usually, 3.45V is a good start point for LiFePO4 cells. Pretty much every smart BMS with Bluetooth access has such a setting, regardless, if the BMS has an active or passive balancer.

Ciao Andy, I noticed something in your settings, which, at this point, seems to be the default, because it was the same in my Daly BMS and caused me some troubles. Level 1 is alarm and Level 2 is protection. Level 1 should be always more conservative than Level 2, as Daly support confirmed me. Your over current discharge level 1 is 100A and level 2 is 80A. I have a Voltronic inverter connected via RS485 to the WNT interface which is connected to the Daly BMS. It was happening that during very sunny days the BMS was stopping the charge mosfets for several hours and the battery was never fully charged. Then I understood why. The communication protocol set into the inverter is LIB and this set automatically the max charging current reading it from the BMS. Can you guess which of the two values was taking? Yes, .... Level 1 And for this reason the protection was always triggered 😂. Other bad thing is that the mobile app doesn't allow you to set both levels, but just Level 2. In my opinion (but I don't have experience with other brands) their hardware seems good, but they have to improve documentation and software which is too complicated and has strange behaviours. Bye.
