All too often, the question of Palestine is framed as an eternal conflict arising from ancient ethnic or religious hatreds, with questions regarding the origins of the state of Israel and the legitimacy of land claims reduced to matters of scriptural interpretation. Such views entirely omit the actual history of Palestine and the Zionist movement. The colonization of Palestine, a process still playing out before our eyes to this day, has definite historical origins at the turn of the 20th century, when Zionism was born and the encroachment of Palestinian land began. Historian Rashid Khalidi, author of The Hundreds' Year War on Palestine: A History of Settler Colonialism and Resistance, 1917- 2017, joins The Chris Hedges Report for a look into this essential history, and how it can help us frame Israel's present war on Gaza.
Rashid Khalidi is the Edward Said Professor of Modern Arab Studies at Columbia University, and the author of several books.

I've come to think the main problem is we don't share an accurate history. He was entirely right about it being generational at 60 years old mine was raised to think of ourselves as protectors of innocent Jews, they are all good, and especially after 9/11 Arabs Muslims are all Islamists. I struggled to understand young American Jews supporting the Palestinians until really opening myself up to a much larger narrative. My friends and family don't really have that desire, they're busy people, these are deeply held beliefs we learned in childhood that have largely gone unquestioned and been reinforced: Jews good intolerant murderous Arabs want us dead. It may require these senior leaders to die off because they refuse to hand over the reigns, and they're living longer. Biden, Netanyahu, Pelosi, Trump, Feinstein, ......

This is the Ottoman census of 1878 indicated the following demographics for the Jerusalem, Nablus, and Acre districts. Muslim - 403,795 or 85.5% Christian - 43,659 or 9.2 % Jewish - 15,001 or 3.2% Jewish (Foreign-born) - Est. 10,000 or 2.1% As you can see, most of the 3.2% Jews were new immigrants themselves. The Arab people have been in that area for hundreds of years. They migrated there peacefully and had nothing to do with expelling the “original Jews”.

@@patrickgrove3469 : If someone attacks you, then it is highly likely that you will also be reactionary. To be reactionary is to react. The only question remaining is what you react to or about. After that is how can you react, do you have the means to do so? I am aged and no longer physically fit like I was during the 1990s, so I can't do much any longer for physical resistance, have too many long term injuries, but I can mentally react.

Thank you thank you THANK YOU for this discussion with Rashid Khalidi. I had gotten his book and his speaking of it is unstoppable. Comments of almost all the shit going on and in the media just substantially what I'm seeing and frustrated. And I can say vocalizing any of this stuff closes the door with most friends and possibly considered antisemitic, which I'm far from that.

Don't be intimidated by the use of declaring a person anti Semitic if s/he doesn't support Zionist apartheid and oppression of Palestinians. Palestinians are Semitic too. Israel doesn't have the moral high ground. If we lose friends because we are standing for right, what have we really lost? Nothing. We need to assess who we are allowing in our inner circle.

I would say that when people understand the difference between Zionism (Christian and Jewish) and Judaism, and how Zionism describes as Antisemitism any critique to the state of Israel, then some people start to change their views.

But he is missing sooo many points here. He is already biased. He forgot to mention the Palestinian Yishuv Jewish communities living side by side with Arab Christians and Muslims. The waves of Jewish in 1880s migrants Europe, Africa, and Asia. He should have made a distinction on what waves of Aliyah [waves of Jews] that settled in Palestine. He is painting a narrative that will reflect towards where his sympathies and allegiances are. He only mentions the 5th waves of Jews that settled there.

The origins of the Lord Arthur Balfour's Declaration goes back to 1908, the period when he was Prime Minister of Britain; that was almost a decade, prior to the Balfour Declaration being Ratified, and Signed, when he was Foreign Minister Secretary of Britain and the Fall of Damascus to the Forces of General Allenby: refer to "The Pillars of Wisdom" by TS Elliott (Lawrence of Arabia).

The Balfour Declaration had no actual authority... Britain’s governance of Palestine, purportedly under the mandate scheme of the League of Nations, never gained a lawful foundation. The League of Nations had no power under the League Covenant to attribute legal significance to the Mandate for Palestine, or to give Britain a right to govern.

Interesting books on topic: A Job Well Done ( a history of the PP, 1983 and 2003 by Edward Horne) And Kein Frieden um Israel (1972 by Walter Hollstein) Take care

The British, as promised given to the Arabs who supported them in ousting the Ottoman Empire, carve out the entire region into 2 to establish a independent state w/o consulting the inhabitants. *No Palestine yet.* 1. East of the Jordan River was given to the Hashemite Kingdom is now known as Jordan. Removing and expelling the few Jews who are living there. 2. West of the Jordan River that became the Palestine where some Old Yishuv Jewish communities are living there together w/ Arab Christians and Muslims.

There are many accusations against them of selective news that reflects their biases. For instance, an actual interview being made inside "al-Shifa hospital" a Palestinian old man accusing Hamas of harming the civilians. I actually saw that interview, try looking for that actual interview. From UAE itself, they hv accusations against Al Jazeera twisting facts. This soured the rel bet Qatar and UAE. Actually there are tons of them.

Watching this in 2024, just got his book. My heart breaks as to where the powers of the world stands on Palestine, against Palestine, not helping the Palestinian people, and now with their massacre by Israel, leaves me feeling more than disappointed about America, Israel, and mankind, over and over again the injustices, wars, and bloodshed continually happening seems so hopeless. So sorry, Palestine, I am so sorry. But I will always stand with Palestine and never forsake their cause.

I also have been protesting since my major I chose for my life work is World History with money and propaganda creation for eugenics that began in 🇺🇸from ideas bred from upper class of UK taught by their parents that these people that are one race must control all other races including the right to use as animals that indigenous peoples have never done as were required to respect and worship those spirits. At 12 when I was taken by my father another History student to “Lawrence of Arabia” that changed my thinking to learn everything I could about the “other”. I have never feared the “other” having been born with purity of heart .

What Sykes and Picot did was to divide the region and sow differences between the peoples of one country to facilitate its rule and control over it and its peoples.

Zahir Muhsein was a Palestinian leader of the pro-Syria As-Sa'iqa Ba'athist faction of the Palestine Liberation Organization between 1971 and 1979. In an interview with Trouw Magazine, 31. March 1977 he stated....."The Palestinian people do not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. Only for political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct "Palestinian people" to oppose Zionism. Yes, the existence of a separate Palestinian identity exists only for tactical reasons. The establishment of a Palestinian state is a new tool to continue the fight against Israel and for Arab unity. If Palestine were an Arab state, at any point in recorded history, why was there no mention of them? Because there never was an Arab Palestinian nation, nor any nation called Palestine, ever.

Salma Fayumi, a resident of Kafr Qasim (Palestin/Israel), demonstrated her cooking prowess on the show "Master Chef." Fayumi proudly showed off her Kushari dish that she prepared, "Egyptian cuisine made of rice and lentil." "My family came from Egypt, from Faiyum, and I am Salma Fayumi from Faiyum," the cook from Kafr Qasim said. Do you think what Hamas did was ok? Have you seen any of the videos that were shown? Sickening. A young german girl who was jewish had attended the music festival and when Hamas terrorists attacked with no provocation they indiscriminately slaughtered everyone they could get at the music festival. There is video of the young german girl being raped while others stood around and kicked and punched her. Afterwards they dragged her naked body through the streets while Palestinians cheered like it was a celebration. Another man called his mother proudly declaring how he had taken off an Israeli mans head with a shovel screaming how proud she should be that she taught him so well. Did you see the video of the man with his small child who he held being tied together to and then set ablaze? Don't pretend that you know everything there is to know about the relationship Israel has with the Palestinians. You see one side because the media controls what you see. Why is it up to Israel to fix this problem? Egypt also borders the Gaza strip and they don't want anything to do with the Palestinians. They won't open their border to them. Why is that? Don't condemn what you don't fully understand. We need the truth from all angles not just one and from where I'm standing what I know is that this conflict was instigated by the Palestinians. I would like to see an end to all wars but as long as men decide to do wicked things the retaliation will continue to follow in the form of another war.

He seemed to be biased in his approach as he selectively presented historical facts to support his narrative. In contrast, I have presented factual information. It is unfortunate that some individuals make baseless and childish comments instead of relying on facts. However, their behaviour only serves to prove my point. The last couple of hundred years is enough, people that lived in Palestine, Muslims, Christians and Jews, are still alive and want to come home before they die, they want their children to live on their lands and their grandchildren to learn their culture. What happened to the Palestinian Yishuv Jewish communities who have been living side by side w/ the Christians and Muslims? 1. How about the waves of Jews in 1880s expelled and persecuted from Morocco, Yemen, Algiers, Saudi where some settled in Southern Levant [that became Palestine]? Eastern Jews are traders and merchants. Acres and acres of lands are purchased from absentee landlords, that angered the peasants of the region. They are forced to evacuate the land fr the new owners [Jews]. 2. The wailing Wall Riots in 1929, never mentioned why? Hundreds of Jews died. 3. The presence of British meant jobs which attracted thousands of laborers especially fr Egypt to Palestine.

Even before the creation of Israel in 1948, Jews were being attacked. Again in 1967, the "6 Day War" Israel was attacked by Egypt, Jordan, Syria and w/ the help of Iraq, Lebanon [Shia]. it was rejected by the Arabs the "UN Partition Plan for both Jewish states and the Arab States. *_So u guess it why this conflict is on-going. Not a single soul remained. And that remains the west of the Jordan River became the Palestine Mandate. So u are going to expel the existing Palestinian Yishuv Jewish communities living there? How about 1880s mass immigration during the Ottoman Empire bet 1881 and 1903? That is only the 1st Aliyah of Jews. This only highlights Dr. Khalid's narrative of his biases against the Jews. There are many points that he did not bother to discuss.

Evil and Genocide triumph bcos good men are passive. They sit idly while the Palestinian holocaust occured. If that's truth them I'm a flying Dutch man. Better you read history books on Israel's times under Egypt, Babylon, Persian, Greek & Roman occupation. There ever was a Palestinian race or country. The Roman Emperor Hadrian wanted to punish & insult the Jews of his day by wiping out the name Judea Israel & changed it to Syria Philistia & from this made up region mutated into Palestine. And no they did not come from Canaan as they claim. It was the Philistines who lived there & waged wars against Israel. The Philistines originated from Greece & Cyprus & were known as the boat people. And yes the lived & traded in Gaza.

Thank you Dr. Khalidi and Chris Hedges. It is always informative to hear you speak. I cry for the Palestinians everyday. And seeing those precious babies taken from the incubator and placed on a table with other babies because the power was shut off, was such an evil intended death to such innocent little lives. Over the years I think many Israelis have lost their souls.

Well, the starting point of his discussion is "The Balfour Declaration 1917" only? What happened to the 1st aliyah [1st wave of Jews] in 1880's? How about those existing Palestinian Yishuv Jewish communities living in Palestine?

How about after the Balfour Declaration 1917, what happened in 1929 that made the Jews to stand up for themselves? He only discusses the 5th aliyah of Jews WWII that came to settle there. So what happened to those 2nd, 3rd, 4th aliyah of Jews that settled there? They just disappeared.

As promised the British delivered its promised to the Hashemite Kingdom [Muslim Arabs] a self-determination land. In 1921, the British divided this region in two: 1. East of the Jordan River became the Emirate of Transjordan, to be ruled by Faysal’s brother ‘Abdullah. So what happened to the Jews living there? They all disappeared. Not a single soul remained. 2. West of the Jordan River became the Palestine Mandate. Hence, even this the Jews are being eradicated. Hence, the reasons for the Balfour Declaration in 1917.

Another very good book is Fallen Pillars by Donald Neff, It tells all about the development of American policy involving Israel and Palestine from 1945 on. A page-turner.

There are diff distinction of Aliyah that came to settle there in Palestine. There were 5 Aliyah or waves of Jews that settled there. So what happened to the 1st wave up to 5th waves of Jews that settled in Palestine? The 5th waves belong to the Holocaust groups in WWII.

Arab states are ruled by dictators who see their own population as enemies..... especially since the Arab spring revolutions that started in 2011. These dictators from the UAE and Saudi Arabia and Bahrain and Oman and Morocco are now buying weapons and material and software from Israël that is specifically designed to control and subjugate populations.

Here's the original text of the declaration: 'His Majesty's Government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country.' In particular, the part beginning ' ... it being clearly understood that noting shall be done to prejudice the civil and religious rights of EXISTING NON-JEWISH COMMUNITIES in Palestine'. I think that does include (implicitly) the group we now know as 'Palestinians', as a resident 'non-Jewish community'.

British mandated Palestine included Jordan and Gaza. The Arabs got 85% the Jews got 15%. Look at the maps until 1917.

He's correct in saying that the Balfour letter ('declaration') didn't mention 'Palestinians', but that is probably because they were known as 'Arabs', but it did acknowledge them and their rights: "His Majesty's Government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country."

Thank you Chris for all your work. I will not vote for a major political party again. I am a 56 year old USAF Veteran originally from California living in Iowa. I, like millions of others, moved on from the GOP as an Obama-can in 2008. The ability in 2023 to hear alternate viewpoints, the truth, is refreshing. I realize by not voting for Biden in 2024 we risk an end to our so called American democracy and will put the future lives of my children and grandchildren in difficulty. But, I cannot participate in the genocide Biden green-lit by parking two aircraft carriers off the coast of Israel. I am sure there are millions of Americans waking up like me and my adult children. American democracy and foreign policy in its current form is not civil or obedient to international law. The murder of children, civilians in Gaza, the West Bank, sickens me. Thank you again for all your works.

Even here in New Zealand one political party is no better or different than the other. It seems in all of the West that we don't have the option of voting ourselves out of this mess and any remaining illusions of democracy have vanished. I'm putting my hope in the East now, in Russia and China, to force a global reordering that will force compliance with international law and a fairer more equal global condition. One very quickly finds most of the things they believed about the workd because they've been fed lies aren't true.

@@taliasya2273 I vaguely remember seeing the movie "Exodus", though I did read the book, which was in my opinion quite ham-handed, even propagandistic for the Jewish side. And that's coming from me, a supporter of Israel. There is a more balanced take in another historical novel by the same author, Leon Uris, called "The Haj" (and it's a much better read too). What I meant by my comment though, was that there were at least some of us oldsters who kept up with the news, which while not perfect was much more informative and educational than today's purely agenda-driven commentary shows. So we remember things like, for example, before Israel built the wall and the checkpoints, how it seemed like every other week there was another terror attack. A school bus of Israeli kids getting shot up, a cafe getting bombed, etc. Or the many attempts at peace, the hopes for a two-state solution. Those college kids chanting "From the river to the sea" don't even know what river or what sea they're chanting about.

You need to go back to 1904 when Winston Churchill chose to switch the British Navy from coal fired boilers to oil fired boilers, in 1903 Theodore Herzl chose a part of Uganda to become the new Jewish State he met with Chamberlain in the UK and agreed to it in principle, as soon as Churchill chose oil Palestine and Transjordan became vital the the British Navy.

the numbers mentioned about the percentage of jews in Palestine in the thirties are incorrect. Khalidi mentions way higher numbers than factual. The Haavari deal hardly brought any jews to Palestine. Britain blocked all immigration during the war
