EDIT: Wirtz wanted to make a big move. He had multiple top clubs interested. Local and foreign. Leverkusen argued he was going to be an adult for their first team. It's up to y'all to decide if Lever and Wirtz bent the agreement, but Cologne isn't to blame.

Not having someone under contract is on you, if they Koln gave him an offer and leverkusen swooped in with a better one sure but koln knew they had a talent and either got lazy or cheap.

100%. Even if Leverkusen hadn’t scooped him up, at 17 it wouldn’t have been long before someone else did. I can understand why Koln and their fans are frustrated at losing such a talented player for so little in return, but the reality is the player wasn’t going to stay at Koln as a professional once a bigger club came in for him. If not Leverkusen, then it would have eventually been Dortmund, Bayern Munich, PSG, Barca, Real Madrid, or one of the many English teams with money to spend.

Either he didn’t want to stay or they didn’t try. Can’t have it both ways either my original comment is right or the entire point of the short is wrong

What everybody forgets about this story, is that this gentleman's agreement has already been "broken" before. Tim Handwerker was in Leverkusen's academy for 10 years, but signed for Köln in 2017. Nobody complained about that at the time, because they didn't sign him for their academy, but for the professional team. Its the same for Wirtz. Yet Köln fans will get mad at Leverkusen for doing the exact same as they did just a couple of years before.

Might be unpopular but if you were that keen on your own youth product why on earth did you allow the contract to run that low giving anyone the opportunity to sign. Yeah it sucks that it was with a team you had a “gentleman’s agreement” with but really anyone could’ve done the same…

Why should Leverkusen agree to not sign a player that could (and likely would have, given enough time) have signed for Dortmund, Leipzig, PSG, Barca, or any number of English teams. The reality is at some point, academy players eventually transition to being full time professionals eligible to sign with any club in the world. Once that happens, as it did here, the agreement on not poaching academy players is no longer applicable for the simple fact that the player is no longer in the academy.

This carries a lot of controversy. First, nobody really knows what has happened at Köln, not extending the contract as early as possible. Second, why wasn’t he given a senior contract at that stage. Third, it is usual and common courtesy to speak to the youth club before signing the player, technically he was still on contract at the time. Especially, the third thing is what makes Cologne furious. However, we can be sure that Wirtz wouldn’t be the top player, he is today, if he stayed at the chaos club across the river.

Exactly. He obviously would've stayed if they offered him a well paying senior contract (which Leverkusen did). Like always, Köln are the architects of their own downfall. Like making that one youth player break contract to sign for them and then cry like little babies when they got their completely justified transfer ban. 2nd tier mentality from a 2nd tier club.

Maybe I misunderstood it but I believe it is not entirely true what your stating. Leverkusens argument was not that he was a professional for cologne but basically that he did not have a youth contract anymore with cologne since it expired/would expire and the leverkusen contract was not a youth contract but a professional one. Basically it comes down to Leverkusen saying the agreement is not to sign youth players for their own youth squad whilst cologne says the agreement extents to signing youth players as professionals to. Normally I would subscribe to Leverkusens interpretation as it seems weird to me to extent it to pros but in statements of Rolfes he basically said that the agreement is pretty loose and Wirtz was just so good they had to ignore it. Because of those statements I’m actually on the cologne side of this. Though they can’t really cry about it. They either were lazy because of that agreement and let a great talent go almost free or they misjudged his talent. Ultimately cologne is still at fault even if it was a dickmove by leverkusen.

A Gentleman IS basicially a noblemen so a man with high values . Gentlementy Agreement means an Agreement that isnt written on paper but due to their high values is given AS an written Agreement or a law. So basicially If you Break such an Agreement you are viewed AS a rat

Cologne incompetency is the issue here. The player already wanted to leave and was already in talks to other clubs, when Leverkusen just began to show interest.
