These came late in Hawkes’s career and he struck out on each one. Henry Hathaway made better use of John Wayne’s aging with North to Alaska, Sons of Katie Elder and True Grit over the same decade. Hathaway’s films were superior to Hawkes’s Rio movies.
@elnick10002 ай бұрын
@@BarlowPalminteri I guess I will have to see SONS OF KATIE ELDER. I much prefer the newer version of TRUE GRIT, also NORTH TO ALASKA starts out well, but for me fizzled out into tedium. Of any Hathaway film I would say GARDEN OF EVIL would be my favorite. It has been a while since I saw EL DORADO, but for me afterwards, none of Weaynes film reaches that one, though it is probably because I like roberrt Mitchum. My favorite Wayne film is John Ford's MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALLANCE,

🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 It was bad, really bad. Nobody wants to see Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin sing, and what really makes it so bad is that all the gorgeous vistas and scenery is just trashed the instant they open their mouths and singing comes out, all that first rate cinematography and editing is ruined the moment that happens, they could have left the comedic overtones in it and it really would have been a good movie, but the instant that musical nonsense starts it just ruins it.

Someone else who appreciates Rio Lobo not as strong as the predecessors but still a good time, especially the opening sequence plus Jack Elam's performance
@dukecraig24022 ай бұрын
Absolutely, and him not mentioning Jack Elam is a horrible oversight, there's not many actors that could steal scenes off John Wayne and Elam does it repeatedly throughout the movie, just like he did it 11 years later in The Cannonball Run. And Sherry Lansing, WOW, she was an absolute knock out in that movie, Jennifer O'Neil was gorgeous but I'm sorry, when Lansing walked into a scene it's like all the air gets sucked out of the room.

One very underrated western i would include is Doc, released in 1971 and directed by Frank Perry It tells a different story of the Wyatt Earp/Doc Holliday/OK Corral gunfight. Its told from the pov of Doc Holliday, played by Stacy Keach, portrayed as a reluctant counterpart to Wyatt Earp, played by Harris Yulin, who is portrayed as a corrupt lawman hungry for political power.

Fin, people, FONT; It has an impact. Also, would using punctuation break your typing finger? The thumbnail is emblazoned with the words, "Great 705 Westerns Buried By Hollywood." I had to click on it to see WTF a 705 western is. Turns out it's 70's, but the font used has the S look same as a 5. Them, with no apostrophe, it reads 705. Well, I have to admit I did find out what a 705 western is, which satisfied my need to come here. 😀"They Call Me Trinity" is one of my all-time favorite movies, as is "Trinity is Still My Name".
