My best investments over the last three years have been preferred stocks rated BBB or better. Always buy them below par (usually $50,000) Many I have bought at 25 to 30 while enjoying a fixed dividend return of 10 to 15 % then watching all recently increase to par $100,000 for a nice 20% to 30% monthly return. My Fund Manager’s best income recommendations are: FFC, GAB, PML etc... The first two make a nice diversified portfolio (preferred, equity, and internationals) and the last a tax free bond fund. The first three pay 10% to 15% annual dividends and the PML pays 7.5% tax free. Beats the heck out of the Dow and CD's and treasuries.

I don't reinvest the dividends because I live off the income, but it can be a good strategy if you don't need the money. As for trading companies in Australia, we don't have any free-fee brokers here. I'm not sure if they taught you math in school, but a fully franked dividend at 3.5% will have the same net return as a dividend at 5% with 0% franking. Yet you filtered your list at a 5% yield before incorporating franking credits. For example at 3:56 you bypass ADELAIDE BRIGHTON FPO, even though they are 100% franked and actually have a 7% gross yield. You are also very unwise to base your stock selections on such limited data.
@TraceyEdwards5 жыл бұрын
Adelaide Brighton is great, I've owned it before (not currently though). I just narrowed my selection down to 13 though. Oh, and yield isn't the only thing I look for. Thanks for watching :)
@PhiNguyen-vg2zo5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for pointing that out. As someone who's very new to the scene and finding my way, even I was wary how repetitive and limited the analysis of these companies were for their dividends. Especially she didn't even mention anything about capital gains in relation to dividends, since surely you'd have to consider not only just the yield when choosing to buy stocks.

Hi Tracey. Why do you not take into account how the business is going overall instead of just focusing on the dividend ? You may get an 8% dividend but the share price is gone down 20% due to weak performance... I feel you're missing a huge part of the overall picture with your method - you focus on getting a dividend in the short term but often loosing more on the share price.
@TraceyEdwards4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't hold a stock that goes down 20%. Dividend yield is just one thing I look at. Stability, I would argue, is far more important.
@timjansz29005 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this Tracey. Been enjoying your videos lots! I'm quite new to the whole stock market investing for income thing. In my research I have come across the aspect of considering the Payout ratio - the ratio of dividend per share to earnings per share (how much of the profits is the company paying out as dividend vs investing in the company). As you have not mentioned that aspect I wondered if you have considered payout ratio when you choose stocks for your portfolio and if not why not. Thanks again for your very sensible advice in this column.
@TraceyEdwards5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tim, that's so nice of you to say. To answer your question: I don’t pay attention to the div payout ratio. Here’s why: Basing how much dividends a company pays based on earnings really only makes sense when comparing similar business models. Eg. A tech or manufacturing company is likely to have a low payout ratio since they want/need to keep a good portion of earnings for growth into new technologies, markets etc, whereas, say, a bank is able to give a high portion of their earnings to shareholders because they don’t need to grow - they only need lots of people to be paying lots of debt back to them. Different industries. Does that make the bank better because they can pay more to shareholders? Or does it make the tech company better because if it has a, say, 50%, div payout ratio so it’s more sustainable long term? It only tells part of the story. I prefer looking at dividend stability instead. I look at the last five years of div payouts and see if they are stable and/or growing. That’s a more reliable indicator for me because it lets me know what to expect in the future. I want to know what I’m likely to receive each time they payout. I know in theory it says that having a 50-80% div payout ratio means the company div *should* be stable in the future but I just haven’t found that to be true. Sometimes it is, other times it isn’t. So it’s not something I look at. Hope that makes sense. :)

FMG have increased their div due to higher iron prices driven by Chinese demand (belt and road initiative) and less supply from Brazil

Reading another review of dividend stocks says "unless you need income it might be unwise to choose very high yields because you may be giving some of your returns to the tax man for no real benefit." Can you do a video on this?
@TraceyEdwards5 жыл бұрын
I can look into it, although I'm not an expert on tax. In Australia, you are taxed on dividends whether you take them as income or reinvest them, although there are benefits here in that a lot of dividends are franked which means the company tax rate has already been paid. Sometimes you can even get a refund on that, depending on what your own personal tax rate ends up being. As for whether high yields are at a disadvantage for tax purposes over small yields, then I always err on the side of, if your income is high, is that really a tax problem or a perception problem? lol.

can you earn a monthly income from shares or stocks?
@janusbifrons93585 жыл бұрын
Kupelwa Kasongo potentially if you are good at speculating which means buying and selling at a profit but the fact you are asking the question means probably not, you can invest with a view to dividends and each company you invest in will generally pay twice a year, and many will pay around the same time, so it's not really a monthly income thing. If you are making enough, you could spread your profits over monthly payments to yourself. Personally, I recommend reinvesting and harnessing the power of compounding, as opposed to focusing on paying yourself.

Holly shit. Did anyone else see that. She chose Agl which has gone down from $20 to $15 and said afterpay was no good and that has gone from $34 to $80 since she made this video. The biggest factor is that the principle grows so that your dividend payout increases over time. Does she have any formal economics qualifications? If not it is dangerous for her to be making these videos. She said Westpac has been stable. Its share price is a third now. She doesnt understand the effects of commodity prices. I am an investment banker. It is very complicated picking stocks that will maintain their principle and cannot be done in this way. KZbin is a very dangerous place to get financial and medical advice a believe.
@TraceyEdwards4 жыл бұрын
I was talking dividends not price growth in this video. As for price drops no-one could have predicted the covid crash, I certainly didn't in 2019. Guess my crystal ball was faulty. And I stand by that AGL is a great dividend stock, still! It's one of the few companies still paying excellent yields. Love that income. There is no doubt that Afterpay is a brilliant growth stock. I mean, wow! But they don't pay dividends, hence why it didn't make the criteria for this video. Westpac (at the time of making this video) had really stable dividends. Kinda sucky lately, as are all the banks, but at the time, great. So thanks for watching, but yeah, this wasn't about finding brilliant growth stocks it was about dividend stocks for income investors.
