I just went to send Sen. Mark Kelly a message, asking him to reconsider his position on requiring transponders on experimental balloons. I'd suggest anyone else concerned about it do the same -- let him know that this will squelch STEM education, and reduce the ability of regular citizens, many of whom are young students, from participating in the scientific process. Who knows, maybe a little pushback might help.

FOD is a serious issue in jet engines. Compressor and turbine blades are very thin and delicate. The rpm's they spin at generate massive centrifugal forces on the blades. The forces are so great that there have been cases of turbine blades being given a "protective coating" That has resulted in the blade increasing in weight slightly, that then increased the centrifugal force significantly enough for blade failure. The company I used to work for didn't' want you removing your foam earplugs outside incase one ended up being injested by a turbine engine! So I'd say the risk of engine damage from one of these balloons / payload is real, but the odds of it happening low. 73

Jet engines are designed to take bird strikes below a certain size without damage. Small items like these typically don't enter the compressor, they're slung into the bypass duct by the fan and go around the central jet engine turbine and out the back just like deluges of rain water do. Jet engines are tested with 76 pounds of water per second passing through them. A few hundred gram payload isn't likely to take one out in the very rare case that one would be ingested.

@@theincredibleshrunkenbeegu7084 Jets are equipped with SIGINT capabilities, probably part of the standard EWCM package. Doing raw collection against UHF/VHF is well within their capabilities. Beyond that, we're talking about a mission against a balloon. You're telling me that noone at NORAD has any clue how to check aprs.fi to do a sanity check if it's possibly a registered hobbiest? None of this is anywhere near challenging compared to missions they perform against adversaries.
@stargazer7644

Well, the balloons typically aren't constantly sending beacons. Sometimes the balloons go for quite some time due to sun angle without sending a beacon. If you look at the tracking website, sometimes they can go for days. And they don't transmit at night. For example, the balloon in question was last reported off the west coast of Alaska. It then floated completely across southern Alaska (and the Anchorage area) over the next day, into Canada, and into the Yukon with no further transmissions received before it was shot down. This was the balloon's sixth trip around the world.

Ignorance and Paranoia are the biggest problems here in the US. When I launch, I always file a NOTAM (Notice to Aimen) - more of a CYA effort on my part. Solution for US is simple actually. Have NORAD and NORCOM provide free very light weight supercap ID transmitters for hobby groups/ Ham Radio groups and perhaps US Weather Service. They gave us free COVID testing kits - why not free ID transmitters. One missile saved would cover the costs. Good video. Thank you.

Take note too that the missile that shot down the Chinese balloon didn't appear to explode. I've been curious if the military has 'practice' missiles used for training that perhaps cost far less since they might be used to train pilots. I don't know if this is the case, but I'm curious if any military aviators might be able to comment if such weapons exist. Even if they do exist, I'm sure they aren't cheap.

Your average turbine engine more than often a IAE V2500 varient fitted to say a A320 will injest and spit out a human body without any problems whatsoever so a small pico balloon is a walk in the park, i don't even know how many birds i have sadly turned into pulp when flying. This is the reason ground crews have white 'do not enter zones' marked in white around the aircraft when we are at a stand and the engines are running, about two months ago i read an accident report of a baggage handler who did not stay outside of the zone and was promptly sucked into the running left hand engine (Captains side of the acft) and was spat out !

What it comes down to is somebody in the Air Force needed an EPR bullet (evaluation performance report) So they could get a firewall five and be promoted immediately. They chose a weather balloon as it's an easy target. The EPR bullet would read something like - "protected top level assets In a rapid manner, saving the United States millions of dollars" . That's how the Air Force works, everything's for recognition lol

By the way, I guess I'll be the buzz kill now. When you're in the military even as an officer, you look out for your troops and for your troops troops. Meaning as an officer, you oversee a group of people, some are enlisted. And in their best interest, you look out to help them with their evaluation performance report and ensure that your troops get firewall fives and their troops get firewall fives or as close to possible. It doesn't matter if you're in aviation or not, it's a group mission and therefore EPR bullets are a thing whether you're writing them or you're earning them. You can't deny that

It doesn't matter if it costs a couple of thousand. It still doesn't justify the action that NORAD took on that ballon. All they would have had to do is do a little research. The data that thing would be squawking out is available to ANYONE who cared to retrieve it. No subversion, no secrets. aprs.fi; VHF 144.390; frequency counter - any of those tools would have revealed what that ballon was about. Nope; no dice. They shot it down. Boy, I feel safe...

This has GOT to be the 10th time I've done this, but WTH, I have it down pat by now. 1st - the cost of those missiles vs the possible cost to the citizens of the country is about $800 per missile. MY life is worth the $800 in tax dollars, sorry if YOURS isn't. 2nd - the pilots have NO way to tell what the balloon is doing. The balloon, if even a high speed convection, MIGHT be 100mph, in a really strong wind. The stall speed of the F-22 is above 150mph. Could YOU figure out what 'that thing' is or what it's doing, while flying by at speeds like that? Can you read a mailbox, while driving past at 50 to 100mph? 3rd - EVEN a senior level pilot is given orders by his SUPERIORS. In this case, it would appear that the orders to shoot these down came from THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. And as no one knew WHAT the bogie was, there WAS a legal order given, so the pilot(s) had NO WAY to deny taking the actions called for. I'm a veteran, so do I think this is a stupid situation? Yes. But the major stupidity, IMO, seems to be coming from Monday Morning Quarterbacks, many of whom are NOT veterans and who do NOT understand how the Uniform Code of Military Justice works. Who think those pilots REALIZED what they were shooting at, and did so with malice toward the tax payers on the hook for the $400K and against the ham radio COMMUNITY as a group. BTW, I'm also an amateur radio guy, so here's the question, have any of you tried to see if there's a GoFundMe to help replace this guy's / club's gear? If you didn't but didn't find one, why not START one? Here's why I think no one has done that and just continue to make fun of the military. It's easy to sit at you keyboard and shoot your mouths off, because you KLNOW there is no rebound on you, there is no possibility of getting your @$$ kicked, so you just keep flipping your lips. And as of 16:16 eastern stupid time on the east coast here, there is NO fund for these guys. So, do you really care about their losses or are you just running off at the mouth?
