If you’re using any softwood (pine, for, etc) the stain will absorb in patchy areas. That can be great if you want the rustic look in the video. If your space requires something with a more even look, apply pre-stain conditioner to your wood. It will allow the stain to absorb evenly, and give you a great showroom type look. Also make sure to sand, sand, sand, and sand some more in gradually increasing grit if you want a more polished look. Great bench, great plans, great videos!

its easy to make because its a very bad build that wont stand up to much heavy use. There is no strength in this build, she didnt even make sure the legs were square with eachother. If you are going to do a job, do it well, not half arsed otherwise you will end up with a poor quality piece of crap.

You both are very good at showing people, who may not have much money to spend, exactly how to make/build some really nice pieces for their home that are very simple and easy for them to build, without buying a lot of expensive tools. When I say this, I'm thinking of young couples who are just starting out and trying to furnish their new home or apartment. Your videos are the best. Keep up your good work.
@SeekerOfLight4 жыл бұрын
This is a cute simple design, and I appreciate your efforts in making the video. One big thing I didn't see is anywhere you screwed you NEED wood glue. The screws are going to loosen up over time and technically they're only there to hold tight until the glue sets and makes the full bond. I've learned this the hard way on other projects. Anyone wanting to make this, use glue on any surface that you have held together with screws.
@faithchamness58103 жыл бұрын
I'm trying to make this bench less unstable, what would you suggest adding to it other than wood glue on the screwed joints? Thanks
@SeekerOfLight3 жыл бұрын
@@faithchamness5810The glue will help tremendously but if you're looking to get a little fancy you can use dowels as a joiner between the each of the 2x8 boards. It's a classic/strong/cheap way or doing it. But your holes nee to be precise, so that can be harder than other methods. If you don't have a router or a table saw to create a tongue and groove, or a biscuit joiner. It's the way to go. Just remember, put glue in the holes and on the dowels themselves. Then clamp them together for at least 15min but I normally wait overnight before working with it to give the glue time to really set up. Also, you can't in this design, but if you have a different style legs, then you can gusset them with a little triangle of wood to add to the lateral support.
@faithchamness58103 жыл бұрын
@@SeekerOfLight thank you so much, I was leaning towards the wooden dowels. I tried screws last time and I kept stripping them out.

I thought I'd throw my two cents in. I made two of the benches. I'm pleased with them. I put four coats of water based spar polyurethane on them after sanding and rounding the edges a bit. I received a few critiques about my work not rising to fine cabinetry, but I wasn't making a Hepplewhite sideboard. I wanted some inexpensive benches to place next to a campfire that might get left out in the rain a couple times. The low cost, and ease of construction really appealed to me. I thank you for posting the video and I thought it was shot very well. Me? I'm a belt and suspenders sort of guy so I put glue on the 2X4 pieces before putting the screws in, and I used a finishing nail to hold the pieces together where I wanted them before pre-drilling the holes for the deck screws I used. I hope no one perceives these suggestions as criticisms, because as I said, I liked the video and it inspired me to make THEIR version of a bench instead of one of the other 6 or 7 benches shown on youtube.
@odessy00006 жыл бұрын
capnbobretired I am thinking of making this bench. Like you, I too found this version much simpler than other videos on youtube. However, I wish to know whether this will hold up in strength, over the years or not. How much load can it hold? Most importantly, whats your opinion on it, since you've already made this.
@pershop49506 жыл бұрын
I think that's the important thing to remember. This is not some bench that we are going to sell at a trade show for hundreds of dollars. It is a simple bench that we might use on the patio or fireplace area, and it might even get left outside in the weather a lot. Or it might be used to put plants on it, so that we raised up the plants by about 16" instead of having them on the ground. As such, this kind of quick design for 15-30 mins of cutting and construction time, is quite useful.

@@odessy0000 I weigh in over 350 lbs. After 2 years I am having to go back and use lag bolts from the top of the bench to get a better bite into the legs. The screws and glue did not give enough bite and the legs separated from the bottom side of the bench. The poly urethane is holding up well. I am not as pleased with the design, but then maybe big guys should look to another design.

I'm someone who built something similar, and want to point out something. When you buy stock 2x4 or 2x6, they are not always flat, and may be different widths. You want to make sure you use ones that are as flat as possible, or you will need a planer (expensive) to flatten them. Secondly, make a cross brace. Not having it is pretty, but in terms of functionality, you will get some wobble if you don't cross brace the legs, even simple small ones from the side of the leg to the seat (45 degrees).

I just built this today. I went to Lowe's. The 2-8-8 was $6.04, a 2-4-12 (which was 4' longer than I needed) was $5.58 I just asked them to cut me the pieces. I bought a sanding block and some 2 1/2" screws. Not expensive at all. It's not "perfect" due to warping in the 2x8 that I picked, but it's a nice solid bench that I'm using in my bedroom, and as someone with very limited woodworking skills, I'm pleased with the result.

I think I also bought a spray bottle that day too (around $5?), but I can't be sure. If you just buy the wood and screws for the bench, it should be about $17 depending on your local prices. I returned on a different trip to get stain, paint brush, tarp etc. because I will be using those items on the pieces that I build later.

I made this from scrap wood at the barn for a bench in the tack room. Since the ground was uneven, I put the bottom cross piece up 6 inches. I also put the legs 6 inches from the edge. It turned out really nice. The top is some aged brown old fencing. Every one loves it. We have a sitting place in the tack room now. Will paint the barn logo on top.

Would this work if I wanted to make the bench 5 feet long instead of 4? So if I got a 2x8x10 feet and cut that in half?
@tromablunts853 жыл бұрын
Probably you would just need a sorry in the middle to prevent bowing

I’ve made two of these in the last month...the wife is doing an after school gardening class at the local elementary and wanted me to buy a bench for the kids..this was much cheaper...first one I used a longer board ten feet instead of eight...only saw I had was a circular saw..so there’s a little wobble to it because cutting straight with one of those is not easy..we liked it so much that I wanted to make another one to keep in the garage..this time though I bought a chop saw..50 bucks used and I know I’ll get more use out of it...used the smaller 8ft boards this time...I also made pockets for the screws and filled them in with filler...thanks to the chop saw there is no wobble...I’m thinking this one may be better suited for the kids...gonna stain it white let them paint it and put a clear coat over it...any way..to make a long story short.. Thanks for a real simple cheap idea..and if you don’t have the tools wherever you buy the wood from will most likely be able to cut it to your specifications..

This is my first time constructing anything. This is my first time ever even pre-drilling a hole in some wood! But this looks so easy I had to try it and it beats paying $80 for a bench. The wood and supplies we're about $16. So that was spot on the only thing that is unrealistic about this video for a person who is new to constructing anything, is that would moves she pre-drilled those holes with no problems. But I have a 14 Volt Black and Decker and it was not as easy at all. I had a few times where I tried to pre-drill this is my first time construction anything. However I can go and get a replacement piece of wood cut for about $5 or less so I'm really not complaining.

I just made this bench, with a few modifications. I used scraps from a construction site so it was all 2x4s and I just glued a couple of them together to use in place of 2x8s. It's a nice-looking bench but also a simple design and is easy to build.

Nothing just the longer legs but for something like that I’d make an extra leg box thing for the middle and I’d use glue on everything as well as the screws just to insure structure and improve longevity

Hiii!! My husband and I made it today! Yayyy!! But instead of having it like a bench , we made a table for my sewing protects. Just we did some measure arrangements to have the legs high. But it didn’t take 15 mins, it was more than that cuz was our firth table hand made. And I love it.
