Happy New Year!! A yes book is Edenbrooke by Julianne Donaldson, it is a reread that I do every year and I love this book, would love to hear others thoughts on it. It is a regency romance (not sure if that is your thing). A maybe is Crossed by Emily McIntire. I'm started it a few days ago, if it is done well it will be great, but it is one that I think if the author wasn't careful it could go so wrong so fast. I didn't really have any no's this year, but in March/April I hit a huge reading slump and really didn't read a book between then and end of November. I am curious on your thoughts on The Coven (I think that was the title) and why you said no. I've heard a lot of mixed feelings and would love to hear why you felt how you felt about it.
@jaimefok4 күн бұрын
Oh regency romance sounds great! TBH I don’t remember much about the Coven 😂 I read it in January of 2024 so it’s been awhile LOL. But from what I remember, the romance was very lust-first and bully romance which isn’t my thing. The plot and world had some potential but nothing was properly developed and so I lost hope by the end of the book!

@jaimefok3 күн бұрын
oh no really?? I had no idea :(
@sophiel.79303 күн бұрын
@@jaimefok Sadly yeah. There's so many ridiculous things in it that I even made a lost. Some of them are harmless but sloppy, like the Bollinger and macaron thing (postman + school teacher couple would definitely NOT have enough money to buy things + macarons were in trend only starting 1990s) or coffee and butter being ready at hand, but some were also very problematic stuff. The two things that stuck with me the most were : - that the french jews were presented as not knowing was would happen after being rounded up and deport, which is absolutely false because most of Poland, Austria and Germany jews had already suffered the same and even jewish people living in the US pretty much knew what would happen if they went deported, even if they didn't know the detail of how. - The french are presented as all peaceful victims when the Vichy government, widely supported by the population until the end of the war, was a fascist, antisemitism, anti-left, homophobic hellhole and sadly many French people were pro-nazis and collaborated. - The Resistance are also presented as pacifist simple, almost a bit slow, people, when they were very motivated and often ready to do very violent actions. - the most crass and outright offensive thing that made me want to chuck my book across the room was the policeman outright telling the mc they were rounding out people and locking them in the Velodrome d'Hiver to be deported. First it's ridiculous to think that a policemen would tell this to a complete stranger, and second french policemen who participated in this were freakin' VOLUNTEERS. They knew where the people would go and that they would arrest mostly women and kids and they still volunteered to do it, did it gladly and with haste, and Hannah presented them as victims. I feel sick just thinking about it. It's outright revisionist sh*t. I'm so mad at Kristin Hannah for not even doing the most basic research on this (you can find this on the very first lines in the Wikipedia article about the Velodrome D'Hiver roundup) and spreading absolute lies about the french occupation. Sorry for the very long comment, I gave you only the bare bones of it if you can believe it ^^'
