This was our first return trip to the Major Mitchell cemetery since the original video. I did not know that this return trip would launch us on an amazing journey from the woods of Georgia to a “ghost town” cemetery in Alabama to finally re-uniting Major Mitchell’s long lost grave with family. The experience launched by finding this cemetery has been one of my proudest moments. PayPal Tip Jar: www.paypal.me/rwrightphotography Special thanks to gas fund contributors: Colleen C. There is a really old cementey in Northeast Mississippi. I think you would enjoy seeing. There's no upkeep of it. It's called Mackey's Creek Cementey. It is on USACE property in Prentiss County MS at Bay Springs Lake.

Another excellent and informative video. You are truly helping to unlock forgotten history and the memories of persons long passed. Nearly appearing in these videos seem to be related (?). What fascinates me is that a newly turned 16 or 17-year-old boy, Cody, appears interested and willing to adventure with you, helping out, and doing what I would think most teenage boys would not be at all interested in. Keep up the fine work, Robert, Cody, and all others who help in these excellent videos.

If you use white household flour on those old stones, then wipe it off leaving the flour in the indentations, it will be much easier to read, and it does not do any damage to the stone. The next rain will wash it off. I have used this technique and it works really well.

You folks are awesome! Funny how people like to find old things, once the new wears off ... They forget. Suggestion on the clean up, might grab small tarp and use it to move the leaves and stuff... Some of the elders in our family went back to find homestead they grew up in. With a lot of trying to remember, they found what was left and I believe the little cemetery there too. Most of these folks are now passed away 15 to 20 years ago. They were in they're late 70s and mid to late 80s then.

Gosh what gorgeous stone carvings on the Major's gravestone and also that of his brother's relatives in Alabama! The heat and hurricane Isiais prevented me from visiting Georgia this trip. I hope it's cooled off for you'all. That fieldstone wall is really nice! The skill to build that quality wall is much rarer these days I believe. It looks beautiful and peaceful there. Thanks for the videos Robert! I appreciated the history narrated by the other Robert on Major Mitchell and his family and the grist mill. It is nice to know how the cemetery came to be there and a little of the local history. I would say from the quality of this cemetery and also the brother's cemetery in Alabama that they were fairly wealthy, industrious and religious. I wonder if they saw or got to visit each other often or if the distance discouraged that. It is surprising how far people traveled in those days considering the lack of automobiles and roads. They may still have had to defend themselves against Indian attacks.

I'm wondering if a funeral director or an admin from a "working" cemetery could give you an idea on how to move or readjust these fallen headstones in a proper way so they can be read easily and not covered over again by falling leaves.
@williamkeith89444 жыл бұрын
Doug, it's simple mechanics. Lash together 3 logs in a tepee shape, lash a chain and come-along wench to the top of the tapee and place the end of the chain under the stone. Winch it up and reset the stone back on the leveled ground.

If you are interested in seeing old graveyards, PLEASE READ THIS. So many old graves are losing the ability to read what is / was on the gravestone. It would be really great if we could come together to have small plaques made for each of them in order to help identify whose grave it is. I think whoever owns / manages the grave should have records on who is in each grave. I am sure some graves may be so old that there is no way to find out. However it would help preserve the info we can read and or find out about each grave, for future generations. I have no idea on the cost it would take to have a small plaque made. However if we came together as a community, I am sure donations and fundraisers could help cover the cost. Maybe starting with the older graves and posting info on where families could have plaques made for their loved ones, whom they visit. It's only a good idea if many people help to come together to make it happen.
