There is a book titled "The Great Race" by Gary Blackwood which chronicled the journey. Fascinating read; at one point in the book they remarked how in 1908 the train could do everything the automobile couldn't! In those days that was true.

Very impressive that the cars were able to travel that far without completely falling apart. This race must be what the movie "The Great Race" from the 1960s was based on, not in a historical manner but in a comedic manner.
