One correction at the end - the Alliance/Encore was completely manufactured in Kenosha, the only thing that came from France were blueprints (and possibly things like the 1.4L engine and manual transmission). There were even two body styles exclusive to American-made ones, the 2 door sedan and the convertible derived from it.
@vanceblosser215511 сағат бұрын
We had one of the first 1500 Alliances off the assembly line. The drivetrain was imported but only because AMC didn't have their production lines quite ready and shortly the entire car was produced in Wisconsin. One stupid thing that happened - the threads for the oil filter on the imported engines were SAE since Renault knew that this was common in the US. AMC changed this to metric threads for some reason and this caused a lot of confusion and some cross threaded filter mounts as the two filters looked identical. They finally put warning labels on the engine. The metric filters were a bit harder to come by. The interior trim of the first couple of years looked like it was above it's class, nice vinyl or molded plastic on all surfaces. The instrument cluster was very easy to service to replace bulbs etc. as it was a module easily removed from the top. Then around 86 or so AMC did a makeover of the interior. They buried the instrument cluster under a car wide hood making service very difficult. The C pillars got that ugly painted press board that American car companies loved so much. Two doors had the walls of the back seat area covered with it too, with cheesy molded in armrests. I don't know who designed that 1.7 liter engine but it was unreliable and difficult to service. It had a camshaft belt instead of a chain. And AMC wondered why sales were decreasing.

I realize that poor Ed is being roundly criticized in the comments for his French pronunciations. I will add to that some criticism of the very small part about Argentina. IKA is the designation for the automobile manufacturer Industrias Kaiser Argentina, a company put together to manufacture cars in Argentina. The company's first product was the Kaiser Manhattan sold as the IKA Carabela with a sturdier manual transmission. The company later made Ramblers and , IIRC, Jeeps.

There were a number of USA based cars shipped as 'knock downs' for assembly with some local parts added (like tires, special lights). For the UK imported 'American' brand cars and truck models often came from Canadian plants due to the Commonwealth trade advantages. Sometimes US based imports had local engines installed, including diesels, and usually of a smaller size due to road tax based on 'Taxable horsepower'.

Australian Motor Industries (AMI) were , at that time, the only Australian owned car company and you could buy shares in them on the Australian stock exchange , unlike Holden , Ford , Chrysler, BMC and the rest. Since AMC was so close to sounding like AMI the AMC make name did not get used in Australia. Also since it took a while to establish the Rambler name as a prestige car for the Australian market. Hence even the Javelin and AMX were the Rambler Javelin and Rambler AMX car in Australia. Australian Motor Industries (AMI) also assembled lots of other makes starting with the Standard Triumph and Ferguson range. Later as well as Standards and Triumph cars they assemble led the Mercedes Benz 220 fintail range and then being the first to assemble Toyotas outside Japan. Toyota liked what AMI produced so much that they bought the company and expanded full production to Altona North. In that process Toyota became the largest Australian exporter of Australian made cars.

@@johnd8892 Yes, you are correct, it was AMI. For the sake of brevity, I didn't mention the company. IKA contracted Pininfarina to redesing the Rambler for argentine taste, and the result was the IKA Torino. As Kaiser become part of AMC and Renault took over AMC along the years, the Torino was renamed from IKA to Renault, and lasted in production until 1982. Some Torinos were sold in Europe by Renault, and more recently collectors buy some and went to Europe, specially pre-1973 models
