The Did You Know? Series is part of Ed's Auto Reviews Christmas 'Car'rol: an Automotive Advent!
In this short story we look at the Renault Rambler, one of those weird overseas tricks done by American carmakers. This time, American Motors (or AMC) formed a partnership with French Renault. AMC wanted to sell cars in Europe, Renault looked for a new flagship. Et voila: The Renault Rambler was born!

Not every Frenchman of the time wanted a DS, even in France, especially in the early years, they were seen as complex, underpowered (less than compared to US standards, but even back then, French car magazines complained about the lack of a 6 cylinder/V6 option for a car in this segment). Peugeot's answer to the DS was the 403, which was almost the complete opposite in term of... well, everything. And they ended up selling about the same numbers. (and yes, the Peugeot 403 is RWD, by the way. Peugeot was the last French carmaker to switch to FWD) For other high-end French models of the era, check the Simca Vedette (and variants). Renault own high end car, the Frégate, failed mostly because the car was rushed in less than 3 years, with heavy reliability issues; but on paper people also appreciated the very conventionnal design and layout (One major change was that Renault wanted the car to be rear engined like their other models, but realized they couldn't make a stable and well-balanced car, so the Frégate had a front engine and rear wheel drive). In fact, EVERY option for high end cars on the French markets were "classic" EXCEPT for the DS. It was the odd one out. It just happened to be the right kind of odd one. The downfall of the Rambler was that AMC followed the US trend of replacing hteir model every year, which (on a French market perspective) pretty much meant that the carmaker behind didn't trusted his car, and also, back then, people bought a car with a perspective of keeping it at least 10 years and perharps 20, so how could you expect to keep a car for even 10 years if it was only available for 1 year? And putting this aside, the Rambler evoveld with bigger engines, which were HEAVILY taxed in France (and Europe in general). Let's put it that way : the horsepower tax on the last Rambler model imported by Renault was basically equivalent to the price of a brand new Citroën 2CV. And to shave some money from the total cost, Renault removed every option they could from the Rambler, meaning that the car came with about the same options than the Renault Dauphine, except with a V8 and a crummy 3 speed automatic gearbox. In total, I think less that 4000 Ramblers were sold by Renault, and the vast majority were the 2 first years, when they were fairly equipped and priced.

It used the Kaiser-Jeep overhead-cam Tornado six instead of the Nash-derived Rambler six. When AMC bought Jeep, it used its own engines, so the new 232 and 258 sixes went in, plus the 304 and 360 V8's.
@AMCMag
@AMCMag 29 күн бұрын
@@msquaretheoriginal The Kaiser 230 "Tornado" OHV six wasn't well received in the US when introduced in mid model year 63. Jeeps were utility vehicles, and most hated the "exotic" OHC engine vs. the more rugged and simple L-head and F-head engines older models used. There were some teething issues such as bad seals, and some maintenance issues US mechanics weren't used to. It was only used a couple years in civilian vehicles, with Kaiser buying AMC 232s after for the Wagoneer and other big Jeeps (before AMC bought Jeep in 1970 -- CJs still used the F-head four or a Buick sourced V-6, and AMC or Buick V-8s in the big Jeeps depending on year). It was still used in the US military version of the big Jeeps though through 1969 or so. Kaiser sent the engine down to their Argentine plant when it bombed in the US civilian market. As the Kaiser car models began to age IKA bought body dies from AMC. They built the Classic and Ambassador, based on the 63-64 AMC styling. Note that the Argentine Ambassador didn't have the extended wheelbase that US models did, it was a Classic with Ambassador trim. The Torino was a hybrid Classic/American. The center passenger section is from the classic, the front and rear hood/trunk sections from the US American model, with front and rear styling as well as dash by Pininfarina to make it exclusively Argentine. The old Kaiser/Continental 226 L-head six was used in many of the Ramblers until the tornado was introduced in 1965. It's odd seeing one with "Rambler" cast into the head! They were made in Argentina also.

Well in the Mustang Car'rol the Mexican Mustang is mentioned in the comments, so I'm going to comment about V.A.M., the Mexican AMC. Besides the Classic, American, Javelin, Gremlin, Rally, Pacer and Jeep models VAM (Vehículos Automotores Mexicanos) produced 2 indigenous rarities: the inline 6 cylinder 4.6 liter (282) motor, which continued its afterlife in the Jeep line until the first Chrysler model Cherokee, and the VAM 3 and 5 door Lerma, (which of course had the 282 6 cylinder motor) a precursor to the Chevrolet Citation and British Rover. One correction at the end - the Alliance/Encore was completely manufactured in Kenosha, the only thing that came from France were blueprints (and possibly things like the 1.4L engine and manual transmission). There were even two body styles exclusive to American-made ones, the 2 door sedan and the convertible derived from it.

We had one of the first 1500 Alliances off the assembly line. The drivetrain was imported but only because AMC didn't have their production lines quite ready and shortly the entire car was produced in Wisconsin. One stupid thing that happened - the threads for the oil filter on the imported engines were SAE since Renault knew that this was common in the US. AMC changed this to metric threads for some reason and this caused a lot of confusion and some cross threaded filter mounts as the two filters looked identical. They finally put warning labels on the engine. The metric filters were a bit harder to come by. The interior trim of the first couple of years looked like it was above it's class, nice vinyl or molded plastic on all surfaces. The instrument cluster was very easy to service to replace bulbs etc. as it was a module easily removed from the top. Then around 86 or so AMC did a makeover of the interior. They buried the instrument cluster under a car wide hood making service very difficult. The C pillars got that ugly painted press board that American car companies loved so much. Two doors had the walls of the back seat area covered with it too, with cheesy molded in armrests. I don't know who designed that 1.7 liter engine but it was unreliable and difficult to service. It had a camshaft belt instead of a chain. And AMC wondered why sales were decreasing.

IKA contracted Pininfarina to redesing the Rambler for argentine taste, and the result was the IKA Torino. As Kaiser become part of AMC and Renault took over AMC along the years, the Torino was renamed from IKA to Renault, and lasted in production until 1982. Some Torinos were sold in Europe by Renault, and more recently collectors buy some and went to Europe, specially pre-1973 models

2:54 - This reminds me of an interesting story I once heard. Supposedly, the French president (de Gaulle, probably) was riding in his Citroën DS when a would-be assassin shot out one of the tires. Thanks to DS's trick hyrdopneumatic suspension, the car got away with just the remaining three tires. The president stuck with Citroëns for the rest of his career. Even if the rebodied Rambler had looked as good as a '61 Continental, it wasn't likely to replace the trusty DS.

It's true; this happened in 1962, and is know as the "Petit-Clamart attack". From what I read, two front tires (remember, it's a FWD car) were popped, and a rear tire also appear flat on pictures taken of the car. Some sources says that the passenger sides tires were popped. It is possible that 2 were popped by bullets and a third one gave up from the degraded conditions or got punctured by debris; what's for sure is that with two flats, any other car of the era would have ended spinning helplessly... but in fact, here, the driver downshifted in 3rd gear and FLOORED the DS to safety. Amazingly, the previous Presidential car was a Simca Présidence, which was replaced by the DS precisely in 1962. And yes, De Gaulle always considered that this day, the DS saved his life. Random though : De Gaulle was accompanied by his wife, next to him, and his son. And he escaped being shot in his car, in 1962. I wonder how he felt after learning of Kennedy's assasination not even 2 years after.

Rambler did not do the assembly in Australia. It was Australian Motor Industries (AMI) at their Port Melbourne assembly factory with some local content input. Australian Motor Industries (AMI) were , at that time, the only Australian owned car company and you could buy shares in them on the Australian stock exchange , unlike Holden , Ford , Chrysler, BMC and the rest. Since AMC was so close to sounding like AMI the AMC make name did not get used in Australia. Also since it took a while to establish the Rambler name as a prestige car for the Australian market. Hence even the Javelin and AMX were the Rambler Javelin and Rambler AMX car in Australia. Australian Motor Industries (AMI) also assembled lots of other makes starting with the Standard Triumph and Ferguson range. Later as well as Standards and Triumph cars they assemble led the Mercedes Benz 220 fintail range and then being the first to assemble Toyotas outside Japan. Toyota liked what AMI produced so much that they bought the company and expanded full production to Altona North. In that process Toyota became the largest Australian exporter of Australian made cars.

One glaring error. The Alliance was re-engineered for the US market and built by AMC in the USA. When Chrysler bought AMC, they stopped production immediately. Not that Chrysler wasn't grateful for Renault's engineering work. The Premier, a larger car based on the Renault 25, was scheduled to go into production in a brand-new plant in Canada. Chrysler marketed it as the Eagle Premier and even rebadged it as a Dodge Monaco. It gave Chrysler the template for two generations of LH cars, which rescued Chrysler from the brink after they ran out of ways to reintroduce the K-car platform. That and two new Jeep models, the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee, made Chrysler a ripe pick for cash-strapped Daimler-Benz, which bled out Chrysler much like Studebaker had done to Packard decades earlier.

There were a number of USA based cars shipped as 'knock downs' for assembly with some local parts added (like tires, special lights). For the UK imported 'American' brand cars and truck models often came from Canadian plants due to the Commonwealth trade advantages. Sometimes US based imports had local engines installed, including diesels, and usually of a smaller size due to road tax based on 'Taxable horsepower'.

Man, i love your videos, now that you mentioned the torino this is my chance to bring it up 😅😅, you should investigate about argentinean automobile history, we had a great automotive industry with a lot of interesting national cars mostly in the 60's, it would make a great episode of automotive history, would love to see it, greetings from Argentina!

I'm from Argentina. The Torino, here, it's more than a car: it's a cultural item. Many think of it as the best car ever produced here (and I agree). But, if you want to dig deeper into why it is so, make some research on the surprise that the Torino's team were in 1968 Nürburgring, when this third world made car competed against the best car builders in the world, and in one of the thougest races.

IKA stands for INDUSTRIAS KAISER ARGENTINA , the KAISER CORP moved its whole operation from the US to Argentina in the late 50s early 60s
@American-Motors-Corporation
@American-Motors-Corporation Ай бұрын
no Kaiser did not move their entire operation from the United States down there That's wrong they said that up as its own independent company. it was basically the Argentina / international arm of Kaiser Motors. in fact the Argentina arm had different business partners through the years yes AMC did have a hand in it after they had purchased Kaiser Jeep corporation in 1970 however that plan at one point also produced VW bugs they were not just exclusive to Kaiser or AMC products.

The video ended with an image of an AMC dealer that included the Renault Le Car. I was tasked with installing AM radios in a shipment of them on a pier outside of Boston, about 1980. The two-hundred Le Cars were all covered in rust on the pier before they ever made it to the dealer. Unsurprisingly, haven’t seen any on the road here since.

Renault managed to get the 9, 11, 21 and ultimately the sportive comfortable 25 to be made by AMC as Alliance. Encore, Medaillon and Premier. That last one was probably the best luxury sedan that Chrysler ever sold as it matched the high performance of German cars. I did test the 25 through the Alps and the Premier several times.

G'day Ed. Was hoping you would expand a bit on Rambler assembly by Australian Motor Industries (AMI) at their Port Melbourne assembly factory with some local content input. Australian Motor Industries (AMI) were , at that time, the only Australian owned car company, and so you could buy shares in them on the Australian stock exchange , unlike Holden , Ford , Chrysler, BMC and the rest making cars in Australia. Since AMC was so close to sounding like AMI, the AMC make name did not get used in Australia. Also since it took a while to establish the Rambler name as a prestige car, like France, for the Australian market. Hence even the Javelin and AMX were the Rambler Javelin and the Rambler AMX car in Australia. Australian Motor Industries (AMI) also assembled lots of other makes starting with the Standard Triumph and Ferguson range. Later as well as Standards and Triumph cars they assembled the Mercedes Benz 220 fintail range and then being the first to assemble Toyotas outside Japan. Toyota liked what AMI produced so much that they bought the company and expanded full production to Altona North, phasing out other makes earlier. In that process Toyota became the largest Australian exporter of Australian made cars.
