The 5611 was a serious update though. Same great trigger, but such a flat shooter now that it shoots high-intensity gamma-ray bursts. Of course, us old-timers still know that the .45 ACP has more stopping power.

My dad gave me my first pistol when I was 6 years old. Taught me how to load, unload, shoot, field strip, clean and reassemble my pistol. It was his old Colt 1911 45 ACP. This has and is my favorite pistol/cartridge combination for the past 70 years, and I haven't yet come up with a good reason to change my mind.

When I was 10 or 11 my uncle bought a new Colt 1911 (1971-ish). He and my dad were shooting at a soup can on a tree stump and both emptied a magazine and never hit the can. I laughed. My uncle loaded the magazine and handed me ol' slabsides, "Since you think it's funny, you try it". I hit the can with the third round and laughed again. Ever since then, I have always thought the 1911 is the coolest thing since they put pockets on pants. The second pistol I ever bought myself was a 1911 and I spent a truckload of money for it... thank you Bill Wilson.

Plus, if your only reason for carrying it is because it’s made out of metal instead of plastic, there are far better all metal options like the Beretta 92 series, the CZ75 series of pistols, the Sig P226 (which is what I carry, not a Glock) etc. You’re free to carry what you want, I’m just saying there are far better options.

Anyone serious about pistols will eventually see the inherent advantages to the design of the 1911. The comparisons to modern handguns and usage are secondary to its unique value. 1911’s have Better stock triggers, better shoot ability, slim profiles (even in some double stacks) and are a piece of American history that will never fade. They don’t have to be a Glock 19 to have their own unique value…

It’s not though. It’s ridiculously over complicated for what it needs to be, the parts have to be hand fit, the tolerances are so tight that it negatively affects reliability, you need tools to disassemble it. Literally the only thing the 1911 has going for it over other guns is the trigger, and even that can be rivaled with modern pistols. If it wasn’t for the fact that it was used in WW1 and WW2, the 1911 would have been long forgotten. It’s not even JMB’s most popular design. The Browning Hi-Power has far more widespread use than the 1911 ever did, and is still the main sidearm of several militaries and police forces all around the world.

@@saintsman77tw 1911's are only unreliable if you use crappy magazines, don't know how to tune an extractor and mess with your feed ramp. Yes, they are built different and they're not for everyone. I have an m1911 that was made in 1912. The slide is a Colt slide, the frame is a Springfield Armory frame. Springfield Armory was ordered to manufacture m1911s very early, to help Colt reach the numbers required by the U.S. Rather than Colt sending the blueprints of the m1911 to Springfield Armory, they sent several finished pistols to Springfield Armory. The Armory took the average of all measurements from the pistols and used that to manufacture about 50,000 m1911 pistols. They were then ordered to stop production on the m1911 and to increase production of the m1903 rifle. The parts from unfinished m1911s were then sent to Colt, so they may used the parts to finish Colt m1911 pistols. Colt did use some Springfield Armory m1911 parts to finish some Colt m1911 pistols. The pistol I own, that has a SA frame and a Colt slide, may be one of these pistols made with components from Colt and Springfield Armory. Or, it is a parts gun that was repaired by a U.S. military Armorer at some time. Unfortunately, there is no way to tell.

In my opinion: I know them better than most people do & the ones I put together have fewer problems than what "professional grade stuff" sells for. That's why I keep coming back to them. Parts all over, but you have to know how to fit them correctly & be picky on the quality of your parts selection. It's a stupidly simple cam lock, mortis lock & weighted slide system in single action. Most trigger pads are less than optimal ergonomically even though the hammer drop feels good.

But when you do, as a left hander, you have that safety sticking out on the left side, which can be swept off by your seat belt, or your jacket, or anything else. You can't buy a 1911 set up with ONLY a right side safety, which makes sense for left handers.

Great vid, but...only 68,000 1911s produced in the 100+ years its been around? I mean...we produced 1.9M of these alone for WW2, so I cannot see that being correct...unless you are referring to JUST the original Browning prototype, and not the M1911A1 or variants, no?

13:13 - 13:22 How about a 'shout out' to the centennial of the 1911A1 (1924 - present) ??!! "HAPPY 100th, Colt 1911A1." I just Googled and discovered 'America Remembers' issued a commemorative. Surely, more than 'America Remembers' 'got in the act.' Had no idea a variation of the Luger in its traditional chambering of 9 mm was made in .45 ACP, as a prototype of one to be mass produced. I didn't clearly understand WHY that scenario didn't follow through. "Thank you, 'Hegshot87,' for your thorough report."

If you manufacture 1911s and haven’t started producing 2011s or double stack 1911s, then you are missing a large market. Also making optic ready a standard! I love CZs. The brilliant engineers and marketing has gone full retard for years not making optic ready pistols. They just started!

I personally think the market is way over saturated with 1911s and 2011s, especially considering one that isn’t total dogsh*t is going to run you a minimum of $1,500.

Let's be honest. I like the 1911 because it's a sexy looking gun...I said it. Glocks are great, they're way lighter and super reliable they also put the UG in ugly...not Hi-point level of ugly mind you but ugly in that Soviet architecture sort of way. The gun says "I was designed by an Austrian Autist who determined this was the most efficient shape for a sidearm. I was then shipped in the finest of Tupperware to be sold to an equally autistic owner who will never stop winging on the internet about how clearly superior my design is and how they don't understand how it is some Boomers and people with aesthetic taste could ever possibly favor the 1911."

Where did it fall too? I still love a 1911, I prefer the double action version, but single or double works though when it comes to a 1911 set up. I’ve seen several different customs that were really nice and I can’t help but like the 1911 style 9 mm when they make them wider For a double stack. A single stack in 9 keeping the grip thinner would be something I could like to spite the limited mag capacity. One day, maybe I will be able to afford a nice one. 😂😂 a colt double Eagle was this first one I ever examined and later shot a couple mags from it. I can’t help it , I like hammers, 1911’s and barrettas that have external hammers will always be preferred by myself over any striker, I have allowed myself to completely trust only one striker, TP9-SFx, I don’t know how long I carried that thing around with an empty chamber before I decided that it wasn’t going to drop that pin unless that trigger was properly depressed, lol, I can’t help it, if I can’t see it , it’s really hard to trust any striker, I can see an external hammer, and cocking one on the draw is the most natural thing I can think of, something I do to any gun with an external hammer with out even thinking about it in a situation when I’m intending to shoot. I look for the external hammer that doesn’t exist on my Canik every now and then 😂😂. Now you have me wanting to shop for a nice 1911 or maybe a 92f 😂😂 I’ll be daydreaming all day now….

I had a Colt Officers in .45, jam on me when I walked into a robbery off duty. From then on I tried several brands which I was not happy with their reliability, and eventually my carry rotation was a Wilson Combat ULC, a Nighthawk Carry Plus; and a nighthawk ShadowHawk commander, all in .45 acp. I believe to bet your life on a 1911, you have to go way up in quality, but based on its design, you are more reliable with a polymer pistol in the long run.

There are many things that I like about the 1911, but it really is outdated. The size and weight are just too much for too few rounds. They're okay for a range toy or a collectors piece, though.

Im 53. I was trained on 1911a1s in 1989 & was issued a worn .45acp in Korea, 1990. Do I own or carry any? 2024? No. Im left handed. I also dislike grip safety designs. On any carry-duty type pistol. 1911s had a long run but, 2024 its over.
