​​@@isaacbotkintrexcarry a P-01. CZ75 pistols are basically an improved Hi-Power, and the P-01 can be comfortably carried. It's obviously not the same gun entirely, but CZ took the Hi-Power and improved on the idea, like making it DA/SA. To be fair the FN Browning Hi-Power also isn't remotely the same gun that JM Browning designed. The Hi-Power was a striker-fired handgun when he died (Browning also designed and patented the striker-fired system that most handguns use today, like Glocks, etc). Dieudonné Joseph Saive, who worked under Browning at FN, redesigned the pistol after Browning died. John Browning really was an absolute genius. There's no doubt that he's the most influential person in firearms history, and no one else even comes close. Nearly every mechanical system in handguns, rifles, and shotguns today was invented by JM Browning. Eugene Stoner was obviously also incredibly influential and a genius. Nearly every modern gas-operated rifle owes it's existence to that man, but his influence still isn't as widespread as Browning's.

One correction about the Alien, it doesn't use gas to cycle the action, the gas pressure is actually the thing that keeps the barrel and slide locked until the pressure is reduced. The beauty of this system is that it's self regulating to some degree - if you use very low powered ammo it produces less of a pressure spike so the slide unlocks earlier so it still cycles. And if you use +P ammo or suppressor, the extra pressure will just keep the slide locked for longer. I think P7 works in a similar way but i dont have any actual shooting experience with that one

It was a few years ago now (2019) that SilencerCo revealed a non-NFA version of their Maxim 9 pistol that had the benefits of a fixed optic mount and ability to use any 9mm direct-thread suppressor. I ended up working for them a couple years later and during the little briefing on company history, products, mission statement etc. I asked about when the non-NFA Maxim 9 would go into production and was met with confusion as to why I would want it without the suppressor and I've been kinda bummed about that exchange ever since lol

That's what I was thinking, pretty much. Take the case head of the .50 AE (.44 Rem Mag), and use it for a traditional straight-wall rimless case; .475 or 12mm (.480), throwing a 285-300 at about 800-1,000 (.476 Eley and .480 Ruger territory); capable of a lot higher, at higher pressure, if you can take the recoil. Load it with APIE, stops what's troubling you.

Higher pressure is the answer. Pistols are still stuck in the 22-50ksi range while rifles are venturing into 85ksi. We're working on it, but have to wait till PCB releases their their new high-pressure conformal ballistic pressure sensor.

Yeah it makes me wonder why FN aren't making a higher pressure, heavier grain version of the 5.7 so that it has better performance and works out of pistols and shorter barrels. The heavier grain (about 40gr) so it actually has a bit more energy to deliver as the bullet is too light currently.

USOG made an interesting video about high velocity rifle rounds being shot through smooth bored (no rifling) barrels. He believes that the pressure can be pushed farther than standard pressures.

@@PYROBALLISTA Upon your mention, I watched the video. This man has a poor background and physics which seems to be the foundation for some bad assumptions. There is some small portion of the ballistic energy used in spinning the projectile that subtracts from that projecting the projectile, and a tiny portion used to swage the projectile that's increased a bit by swaging into rifling. (That our bullets have a low moment of inertia that minimizes that energy expenditure may be partly responsible for its unprecedented energy-per-pressure). This is the only way in which smoothbores may produce better ballistics, and the effect is very small. Much of what he says regarding technical mechanics is outright bogus. If you know this man, you should for his safety tell him that the reason he's seeing crazy high velocities is because he's using crazy high pressures dangerously inappropriate for that firearm. Many loaders don't understand how quickly load pressure becomes completely unpredictable with simple changes. He changed an enormous factor and doesn't seem to understand that it makes him entirely blind to the pressure with no pressure-sensing ability. He also doesn't seem to understand that ordering the bore "unrifled" means that there's MORE bore constriction/friction/swaging because rifling cuts remove material from the bore wall (increase the cross-sectional area of the bore).

Walther’s CCP pistol uses a gas piston blowback system in a polymer frame and doesn’t get nearly as hot as the HK P7. It’s a concealed carry focused single stack in .380 & 9mm.

Instead of making it smaller like they did,make it medium frame having a larger than full-size barrel . The mounting options would be limitless. This is an excellent presentation but I have some concerns: 1. The Boberg feeding mechanism wouldn't have slide-lock when empty. The slide needs to be forward to grab a new round from the magazine, so if it did lock open you would have to drop the slide and rack it again to actually chamber a round. 2. The Boberg mechanism will require higher-spec ammunition, but I think if we assume ammunition will "improve" then you could assume that ammunition will be better optimized for shorter barrels anyway, eliminating the need for that extra 1-2" of barrel and thus the need for this mechanism. 3. Gas delayed blowbacks have another disadvantage that steer them away from duty-use, and that is carbon fouling accumulating in the gas cylinder. They would have to be cleaned more often. 4. The heat issue with gas delayed blowbacks can likely be mitigated by thermally isolating the barrel from the frame, or by using heat-wicking compounds like the ones found in the DRACOS barrel. With the amount of ammunition that you'd realistically carry on your body, the heat probably won't be an issue regardless. Thank you for reading.

Yeah, the Boberg has an unfortunate habit of pulling bullets out of casings. Barrel length also isn’t nearly as much of a concern in a pistol as compared to a rifle.

Respectfully I disagree about the "better ammo" part. While it would be possible to get really hot ammo out of a short barrel, you're talking about a lot more pressure, a lot more flash, and a lot more recoil. A perfect example of this is the new Sig rifle the DOD has adopted. Yes you are getting velocities that .308 needs a barrel almost twice as long to to achieve, but your barrel life is horrible, and the recoil is very high on those guns. On top of all that, if this boberg pistol shown here is something I would wanna shoot without sending 2$ down range everytime I pull the trigger. This would price me as well as millions out of owning this gun and training regularly with it. Ammo has to be cheap it's the biggest cost to owning guns. If we're talking about government or private security they might have the fund, but a normal guy making 60K a year isn't gonna wanna buy this if a case of ammo is more then the price of the firearm.

If the front part of the “slide” isn’t moving, there’s no reason to attach the suppressor to the barrel. It can just be part of the “slide” or frame. The suppressor could actually be the entire front/top of the pistol.

Yup a simple threaded boss on the muzzle end of the frame. Either cast or welded, or offered as an aftermarket option would be sweet. No need for threaded barrels. May need to do something to counteract all that pressure on the frame though.

Yup, PM6 Makarov. They cut the front off the slide, and integrally suppressed the barrel. Then they welded two metal weights to the slide, running below the can, to equal the mass removed from the slide. To reduce back pressure (? my guess, that's why), they smoothbored the barrel. About as bulky as a pepperbox pistol, but only about 40mm longer than a standard Makarov. At a guess, the can was maybe about 30mm diameter? Since seeing one captured in Afghanistan, I have wanted to do that to a CZ-82, and add Interarm's progressive Walther sear, and make a double-length magazine or two.

The still in production Walther CCP uses the same gas delay as the HK P7. It is a great little carry gun, but after a couple of magazines of real defensive 9mm ammo the area around your trigger finger is HOT. Short and light PDW especially with 5.7 light weight ammunition is a cool concept. I would buy a couple of those.

Take a note from the p90 an redesign the mag and/or position it feeds from an that might be enough to get it where you want it. A specific caliber may be required for capacity issues but that would allow you to address the angle of feed and adjust it.

What a great video. Excellent thoughts and some seriously great motivation. Back when the wait time on a Form 4 was 11 months, I considered the idea of taking the Form 1 route (as far as I know the wait time is much less. I’m sure that’s changed recently). But I had the thought of hosting a type of FFL “maker’s space” that allows members to manufacture and assemble their own Form 1 NFA items. It would probably take a great deal of certification, licensing and lawyer’s fees to realize such a concept, but at the time it would’ve accomplished a number of things: 1) get suppressors, SBR’s and other arms into the hands of citizens much more quickly, 2) educate and influence people on firearms, manufacturing, and the law, and 3) develop a community of like-minded enthusiasts and grow a network of these types of maker’s spaces. Maybe someone has done it already, but if not then perhaps I’ll set up a kickstarter page or something.

I have thought about this for a long time. I think controls could be a mixture of the PPQ European style mag release and a slide release in line with the trigger guard similar to that on a MP7. I think having both of those in immediate reach of your trigger finger makes a lot of sense.

I see a problem with the design, Isaac - having only the rear iron sight on the de facto slide will either require solid tolerances in lock-up (decreasing reliability) or introduce allingment isues with the "fixed" front sight. Then again, those are backup sights as the dot is the primary aiming device, so even with loose tolerances it may be worth it...

Would you consider making a suppressor mount that sleeves over the barrel to fix the suppressor to the frame or maybe that pic rail suppressor used by the KSK. I was thinking like the ak103 mount for the flash hider. The main issue with mounting to a rotating barrel is that the suppressor must now fit radially symmetric geometry and not all suppressors do that.

One of my favorite post-Soviet Bloc brands, the other red-headed step cousin of CZ: Grand Power from Slovakia (for those of you who remember the former country Czechoslovakia). The Q series has an amazing, yet different feeling striker trigger, and nearly all their designs (sans most recent P24 model). It would be incredible if you combined Boberg’s design with the shoot ability of a rotating barrel design! LOVE this content!

I had an idea when I was a kid for a pistol that had two slides that moved in opposite directions to counteract recoil. It wouldhave a fuxed barrel and a segmented 2 piece slide, one that moved rearward to eject the spent round and load a new one from the magazine like a traditional pistol, and another that moved forward at the same time to cancel out the force that the rearward slide generated. I toyed around in autocad and inventor when i was in high school taking a CAD class trying to make it happen. Messed with a rack and pinion systen that would use the motion of the rear slide to drive the front slide forward, as well as a gas system that had a rear facing and a forward facing gas port to drive the two slides in opposite directions. Don't know if anyone else has toyed with that idea but i've always been fascinated with it and think about it often in my down time at work. Something sort of similar exists now with the AK-107 and it's recoil mitigation system, but i came up with that idea before I knew about the AK-107's existence. I see it as a proof of concept, and hope the concept will be applied to handguns in my lifetime.

The main problem with any of these concepts comes from the source of the recoil; the fired projectile and gases. Equal and opposite forces. Energy goes forward and must be balanced by the same energy going back. The effects of recoil can be deflected, delayed, absorbed by the moving parts and mass of the gun and the shooters body. But it must be there. True recoilless weapons direct gasses rearward with high energy. The gyrojet eliminated recoil by using rockets instead of barrel pressure.

But I guess that goes back to being gas operated. Unless it's a radial delayed design. Definitely agree that bullpups are going to make a big comeback. The weight balance of them does just make so much more sense, as well as the improved economy of barrel length. People definitely have seen the value of a short rifle, and seen the significance of ballistic difference with them as well. Hard earned lessons. Bullpups are primed to really become a preferred solution, but only if they can match the ergonomics and ease of use of the AR15.

So, it may seem a bit pedestrian considering the video, has anyone considered changing from back straps to a similar setup but put them on the front of the grip. By the time I put a back strap that opens up space for good off hand grip, it’s interfering with the contact point on the trigger. It’s not a huge problem but it seems like it might merit some thought.

Yes, I have. I came up with a squeeze-cocker for the Polish P-64 to bypass the double-action, based on the H&K P7. Also, try the Radom wz-35 if you ever get the chance. It's what you never knew a 1911 should feel and balance like; it's possible to machine one at home as a bare-metal frame for 1911 parts, but it ain't easy! I like to throw on the extended-and-lowered slide release and extended-and-lowered ambidextrous safety from the M1914 (Kingdom of Denmark created and patented those as a Royal Patent, so they've never been commercially available as aftermarket parts), while I'm at it.

I like the Springfield (Croatian HS Produkt, really) Echelon. Modular fire control group, good optics mounting. Give it a 13.5x1 LH threaded barrel with the click-in system for comps/cans that the Hellcat RDP has and we are golden. Because everybody knows that left hand threaded (won't screw loose automatically) and a well defined thread pattern are superior. Plus, the click-in is neat to avoid washers.

American idea what the market likes, made over there.

The first gun that came into my head when I was listening to the first minute or so of the video was: Laugo Alien. I'm just writing this comment before I finish the video so I can feel good about myself if you talk about the Alien haha. When I think of guns that are going to take everything great that we know about now and move it into the next era, that's the one. That is truly a revolutionary handgun and that is the form factor we need to pursue. And if that particular gun isn't going to become the next hit wonder like Glock, then it's going to be someone else doing something similar.

The PDW space has long been undeserved by firearms manufacturers. The Flux Raider style PDW is such a leap forward in 2a ownership. These are platforms that allow real people to conceal what would be "modern sub guns" that take advantage of modern easier to perform 2024 manufacturing techniques.

Kind of. I should have mentioned it, because Glock making a rotating barrel pistol is pretty big deal. However, it's not replacing the Browning tilt action, it's just a prototype to try to win a police contract.

I think in the future, full sized pistols should be almost exclusively available in 9x25 dillon or 10mm. With a 60 gr bullet (which can be easily achieved with 9x25 and has been done before with 10mm) you can achieve 2400 FPS out of a 5" barrel, which puts the projectile comfortably into the hydrostatic shock range while still having over twice as much energy as 9mm. The only real disadvantages for a full size in these calibers is recoil and cost of ammo (and ammo availability in the case of 9x25). Recoil is a skill issue and can be reduced with a good pistol design, the other two come down to market pressure

@blackout.ghost718 .300 BLK was never supposed to replace 5.56; it is a special round to do different things better than 5.56, and it has been pretty successful at it. The rest were simply trying to be slightly better 5.56, and no one really needs that, so they all failed. Light for caliber 10mm or 9x25 is a similar thing. It is trying to do something different from 9mm (cause rifle-like hydrostatic shock using a full sized pistol or a flux raider sized pdw) and is not attempting to replace 9mm in all roles. .30 super carry or .40 S&W are examples of rounds trying to replace 9mm, and as of 2024, neither was successful.
