I want to point out a park in Marshall county, Indiana. Jane’s Park, in Bremen, is named in honor of Jane (Sieg) Stillson, who died in 1999. She chose to forgo abortion, when diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer while she was pregnant with her second child. Her daughter was born in May of 1997; Jane was given twenty months more to spend with her daughter, son and husband before she went home to be with the Lord. We always hear of the women who died because they couldn’t get an abortion but Jane’s story has always stayed with me because she chose NOT to have a recommended abortion. She and I were almost the same age, only a few months separated us. She and her husband’s faith helped them make their decisions and helped carry them through that time. I drive through Bremen occasionally and see the sign for the park and think of her story. She knew her choice might very well result in her death but she chose to give birth to her daughter before pursuing the more aggressive and risky treatment she needed. It’s a story of courage and faith, love and sadness (for the time) but ultimate victory.
