When Trump imposed import tariffs on large residential washing machines (with advanced "Smart" technology made in China by South Korean conglomerates under the brand names of LG and Samsung), American washing machine makers (Whirlpool and Maytag) did not find a way to make washing machines better for much less. The retail price of LG and Samsung machines immediately shot up by 50%. Whirlpool and Maytag raised their prices, just because they could. To make a long one short, the price of all large residential washing machines increased by 12% (from May of 2018 when Trump imposed the tariffs until the tariffs expired in 2023). As a result of the tariffs, Americans paid $1.5 billion more for washing machines. LG and Samsung moved some production to the U. S., creating 1,800 jobs. Since 2018, sales of LG and Samsung machines have steadily increased, while sales of Whirlpool and Maytag machines have steadily declined. Chinese retaliation cost the American taxpayer $30 billion in the form of aid payments to farmers who lost sales of agricultural products to China. It cost American consumers $833,000 to create one new job making washing machines. Ironically, the tariffs meant to protect Whirlpool from LG and Samsung resulted in LG and Samsung gaining market share at the expense of Whirlpool and Maytag.
