The amazing thing to me is the longevity of the basic engineering of this fantastic machine. I can remember seeing ads in the sixties growing up for the Vari-Typer and trying to figure out how it worked.

The "hammer" on the back side of the paper seems key to how this operates. Instead of hitting metal type against a rubber platen, it's hitting a metal flat against the rubber type. Was that aspect unique to this typewriter or were there other ones with that sort of operation?

@tomdchi12 there were a few like this, mainly the Munson/chicago, but some more obscure machines like the Postal and the Keystone.

Beautiful machine! To think that none of the people who used this typewriter are still around today and all we have left is the typewriter itself. I wonder what the reaction to all of our stuff will be in 100 years…
