Good morning Matt. ☕️time. Now that I’m retired if it wasn’t for my phone I wouldn’t know what day it is 😀. I just nicely got figured out your video schedule and you change it again. 😆. Nice nymph. When I first saw the thumbnail I thought Doc Spratley. When you said Herter called it an egg sack maybe he expected it to be inverted in the water when being fished or it was an editors change. I’ve always seen them referred to as a wing case. Going to tie a few of these just to try. Take care Matt. Sunday…….next video is Sunday….have to remember. Need more coffee. 😁

Hahaha! I can't wait for the days when I can't tell if it's a Tuesday or Wednesday! It's like my buddy Jim who'll send me pictures of him on the river some random morning in the middle of the week. Right now my fishing days are usually Saturday's and are scheduled out 2-3 weeks ahead of time. It'll be kind of nice to wake up some morning and decide, "I think I'll go fishing today." Someday my friend. :-)

Hey Mel, thanks for the note and thinking of me! Yeah, it's been hectic around here lately so I'm hoping only doing one video during the middle of the week will get me some time back. But then again, I may just end up staying up too late on Saturday nights. At least until I can get into a routine. Thanks again my friend!

In “Trout,” Ray Bergman listed the Ed Burke as one of his favorite nymphs, & his color plates showed it with a full hackle collar. The large size & gold tinsel rib over black dubbing probably makes it look pretty much like golden stonefly tumbling in the currents. It’s a fly that shouldn’t be forgotten. Good choice, Matt.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies Жыл бұрын
Thanks Bob! Funny you mention Bergman as I was at the symposium in NJ yesterday and saw a single fly (in a small shadow box) tied by him being sold for $250. But I really wonder how they guarantee the provenance of it. I guess you really can't and just have to trust the seller. Either way, I couldn't justify spending that much for something like that. And besides, it was a dry fly. He's more famous for his dozen plates of wet flies, with only a few dries sprinkled about. If I had a Ray Bergman original, I'd want it to be one of his colorful wets. :-)
@FlyTyer1948
@FlyTyer1948 Жыл бұрын
Was the seller a relative of Bergman? I have what is allegedly a Cosseboom. We had car problems at camp & the nearest dealer was an hour south in Bangor. I took a tying kit with me & was tying a batch of Gartside’s Soft Hackles in the waiting room. The service mgr. saw me & asked about them, so I gave him a couple. He came back later & gave me a fly which he said was an original Cosseboom, who was his great uncle. Was that true? Who knows, but it is nicely tied.

@@FlyTyer1948 Great story! I don't think the guy was a relative. He was a contemporary tier; I forgot who he was but I'd heard of him. I also saw a guy selling half a dozen of Dave Hughes flies in a small shadow box for $175. I was tempted to pick those up but couldn't quite do it. 🙂

Matt, I looked all morning for the Tuesday video, I thought you fell through the farm floor and broke your embryo wing sack, glad you're OK and replaced it with a wing case 🤣Just kidding, but my mind also saw "egg" when I read "wing" in the text. Weird 30's nomenclature for bug anatomy, sorta makes sense though, seeing the adult emerges from that area 🤔Anyway nice bug and vise from Herter's. That manual is pretty cool. You should tie more from it, I liked the few that I saw. Well see you Sunday... I guess 😉Take care 👍and thanks for another cool bug.

Hahaha! Same here! But all is good down here in Maryland. Just mixing it up to try and get some of my time back on weekday nights. Being up until 11pm or later and still trying to get up at 4am has been getting old! Okay, now you've talked me into it. I'm going to go through this old Herter's book and tab any fly I might want to tie from it. It is kind of cool tying from an old b/w drawing, that way nobody will really know if you mess it all up. :-) Long week at the farm, got back Friday and drove up to the fly tying symposium in NJ on Saturday. It was a good time. I got to visit with Valla and Barry Ord Clarke for a bit. Two of my heroes in the game. Plus lots of others there I met for the first time. Okay, now it's Sunday and the regular chores are calling me. Ugh. I need to be retired!

Nice fly Matt. I think a good variation would be to make the tail red but then I guess it might be a different fly. Somewhere I have an old Herter's fly tying and lure making book. It's interesting to see some of the materials they call for. Keep the good stuff coming buddy.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies Жыл бұрын
Appreciate it Dave! I was thinking something similar, and might try dubbing a small pink or red thorax just behind the hackle for somewhat of a hotspot. And yeah, that probably makes it a different fly too, but I do like a bit of something to make it pop. :-)

Good Morning Sir Matt, Wow you had me there for a minute again. I was confused and even wondered if everything was alright with you. I'm glad all is well. The Burke Nymph is nice as well, tying them big might help it the waters I fish in Texas but I might have to try silver, it seen that any time I use a fly or jig fly with silver they tear it up. I never used anything gold but I will try it thank you Sir.

Well thank you Alex! I appreciate the note my friend. I do mix in some steelhead patterns from time to time, as they are a lot of fun to tie, but the views on those are usually a lot lower so it makes me think that most of my audience are trout guys. But still, I'll try to add some more steelhead, and even more warmwater bass and panfish bugs this year. :-)

Morning Matt. Like the fly and the history. My question to you is. When you blend your dubbing do you use a coffee grinder or by hand?
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies Жыл бұрын
I do mix it both ways Nich. Sometimes if I'm just doing enough for a couple of flies, I'll do it by hand. It only takes a couple seconds. But say, when I'm out of something like purple squirrel and need to replenish one of my containers, I'll pull out the coffee grinder so I can make a decent bunch. And sometimes, if I'm trying some new blend for an experiment, with 2-3 different materials, I might use the coffee grinder just to get a good blend. And that way I can add a little more of one color, see how it looks, then add something else, blend, and repeat until I get what I'm looking for.

Great looking fly Matt. I love those simple sketches in the old fly books. I paused on the recipe and it says "wing sac" not egg sac! LOL! Still a bit goofy but at least Herter didn't call it a "wing bud". That's an annoying term!
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies Жыл бұрын
