This 1956 I&E (Information and Education) Office of the Armed Forces sports reel mostly looks at the performance of the US team at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne. It highlights how many members of the armed forces participate in the Olympics and names their rank while they are competing. It looks at all men and women’s Olympic events, but mainly covers the events in which US athletes win medals. This includes events like the 100 m dash, high hurdles, and discus, where US athletes take Gold, Silver, and Bronze. The 1956 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XVI Olympiad, were an international multi-sport event held in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, from 22 November to 8 December 1956, with the exception of the equestrian events, which were held in Stockholm, Sweden, in June 1956.

First time I have seen Paul Anderson winning the weight lifting contest. He had been very sick from what I read.

You aren't gonna lose many basketball games with Bill Russell on your team. The weightlifters then had to do a no-touch clean, the lifters nowadays have a much greater advantage since the rule changed.

Before the Olympic flag goes to Rome in 1960, it actually goes to Squaw Valley, CA for the 1960 Winter Olympics.

That actually isn’t correct. There were two separate Olympic flags: the Antwerp Flag that flew at the Summer Olympic Games, and the Oslo Flag that flew at the Winter Olympic. This remains the case to this day, although the Antwerp Flag has been replaced by the Seoul Flag and later the Rio de Janeiro Flag, while the Oslo Flag has been placed by Pyeongchang Flag. Anyways, there’s been two separate flags for the Winter and Summer Olympics, and has been since before the 1956 Olympics depicted here.

It was amateur sports, it wasn't great but it was the start of something that became great. Not the same thing as apartheid, more like a family barbecue that doesn't make it racist.
