The Recording Session That Almost Created Led Zeppelin! Were They Rock’s Predestined Band?
Hey everyone!
On May 18th 1966, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck from the English Rock band The Yardbirds joined The Who’s Drummer Keith Moon, John Paul Jones, and Nicky Hopkins to record Jeff Beck’s ‘Beck’s Bolero’!
Many consider this session the session that almost produced the Rock band Led Zeppelin a full two years early!
Who would have wound up in this alternative line-up if it had manifested at this early date? What name would they have chosen for the band? Who would they have got to sing lead vocals?
These and many more questions are answered in my latest video, and Part 1 to my new series based on Led Zeppelin’s story!
Don’t forget to give a thumbs up if you enjoy the video! Feel free to subscribe to ‘The Tribe’, and share my videos as well1
Enjoy!

I think that band would have been a supergroup that maybe lasted two albums. Perhaps like Cream. Plant was able to mold the raw talent of Plant and Bonham to conform to his vision. I remember reading that, when Zep first got together, Bonham, being the cocky 20 year old that he was, was unhappy about some of the direction he was getting from Page. Grant took him aside and said basically..,shut the fuck up and do what this man says or you’re out That wouldn’t have worked with Moon. He was too uncontrollable because he was already a celebrity. Ditto for Entwhistle. Marriott was also already his own man. Page would not have been able to exert the control he needed to realize his vision with those guys. Too many huge egos already in place. And Beck? I think he and Jimmy, although great mates, would have wanted to go in different directions musically after awhile. Good for an album and a tour perhaps, but it would have imploded very soon I think

As much as we've enjoyed the work of these VERY talented musicians, it probably wouldn't have worked out as a band. The Led Zeppelin we know was Page's idea and this was HIS band. Having a Beck, Entwistle, and Moon WITH Jimmy Page in one band the expectations would have been too high. When Page met and heard Plant, his first instincts were correct, BUT, he had to assure himself that Robert was a "good fit." Before inviting him to his home, Page has admitted that he suspected that Plant must be too full of himself, probably difficult to work with. How pleasantly WRONG he was! He found Plant to be quite charming and humble. They both shared the same likes of folk artists as Page showed him his ideas of different tunes. He saw that Pant could take direction and the excitement in his attitude. Page was very familiar with Jones' playing and saw him as the other "stabbed/experienced" member. Peter Grant was assisting Jimmy with his project as the two of them had already worked together as the Yardbirds were ending. In an interview, Grant stated that he knew John Bohnam would be the drummer BEFORE he had even heard him play. John was friends with Plant, and it was Plant that suggested for Jimmy to go hear his style at some gig. According to Grant, he said he knew Bohnam was the right guy because when Jimmy phoned him, Page paid for the phone call. "When I hung up the phone, it dawned on me that it wasn't a collect call. Well, that's first. This guy must be really good." Personally, I think there would have been too many egos with the "fantasy" Zeppelin. At the start of OUR Zeppelin, the only one with an ego was Page, BUT also smart enough to check it at the door. He didn't want another "Who" where Townsend did all of the songwriting. Page really wanted to form a band he could collaborate with. There's no way Beck would have a good working partner, Moon was already a handful, and Page would have NEVER put up with his nonsense. Being a great musician is one thing. Being a bandmate as well is another.

It makes the music unpredictable and interesting. It's totally lost in today's click-track recording method.

Michael, great content, as always. Beck’s Bolero is a magic track. When you discuss Page’s lifting of riffs and songs from Willie Dixon, please do not neglect driving the point home that the entire genre of blues would be nowhere near as omnipresent without Jimmy bringing the unmatched spotlight that was Led Zeppelin. Page brought the fans to the blues. Not the Stones, not Clapton, not Fleetwood Mac - it was Pagey that lifted the blues into the spotlight.

1)Roger Daltrey said Moon couldn't play on The Music Must Change from the Who Are You album. He couldn't get the 3/4 right, & they had to use the sound of a pair of boots walking across the floor. Moon was emotional & unstructured. 2) Moon said he screamed, at the song's mid break, because he had just broke a $500 studio mic. 3)Bonham was all about structure & details. 4)Hendrix was emotional & unstructured, while SRV was sounding like him, but you could make sense out of his playing structure. 5) Moon, Bonham, Hendrix, & SRV, whether structured or not, pushed the emotional side to the full extreme.

In a head to head I always take Bonzo over Moon but I can't help but to wonder how Jimmy would have dealt with Moons musical style(or rather lack of) and combustible personality. Jimmy may have been a Wizard but he was also a true professional so I really can't figure how that dynamic would have played out. Either way I dont think it would have lasted 10 years. But damn, it sure is an intriguing thought.

Moon's almost uncontrollable lack of style would not even last to the first album. Do not forget that Bonham originally had a busy style and Page yelled to simplify so as to not overwhelm. Two, Steve Marriot who can really belt out a song nevertheless not have the vocal range and can add into even further by asking who was to write those lyrics to the song. John Entwhistle was a rock and roll bassist whereas John Paul Jones was classically trained so Thunder fingers may have enabled to really roll. As for Page and Beck, they may have been able to create some ungodly rock and roll, but how were the two ever going to figure out who was to play the lead? So where does that leave them to go?

I seriously doubt Jeff Beck would have stayed in this mythical group as he changed directions in the Jeff Beck group to a jazz rock hybrid artist. And - although lifelong friends with Page, I think there would be conflict over both leadership and genre focus between them. I could also seen Moon and Page having issues. Marriiot and Entwistle would probably work out ok, but it would have been a different sounding band. They would have very good though - too much talent there to not be. I have no idea about Hopkins, not knowing much about his personality.

Michael, I was listening to that song by Spirit called Taurus versus Stairway to Heaven. There are similarities, however ,within the first 30 seconds there's seven mathematical discongruencies. There's a note that's missing in the Spirit song pretend that's a numerical number and from that numerical number is a double jump like numerical jumping it's absent so there's no way can be considered a copy. The algorithm in the Physical Realm is two once you noticed a third discongruency, then you're beyond what is acceptable of what you would consider a copy in the Physical Realm., I counted three then I counted another three and then another one I stopped listening to the Spirit song Taurus. It's not a match not enough to be considered a copy too much difference mathematically. Thank you so much

Mike you nailed it - my thought on “the history of rock” that is. I’ve always said to people who ask me “what do you think of this or that” concerning rock music. Here’s what I tell ‘em: my thoughts on the history of rock music? simple - Fifties: Elvis. Sixties: Beatles. Seventies: Zeppelin. Eighties: Van Halen. These artists all brought forth something that wasn’t there before them…and none of their contemporaries at their respective timeframe could outfox em. Elvis really was a prince from another planet. His unmistakable angelic voice and good looks set the mold for plenty of spin-off teen idols. None to be as big as Elvis. The Beatles WROTE THEIR OWN SONGS. This was unheard of at the time. Sinatra or Elvis didn’t write songs. The Beatles did and the only other to break the trend of covering others was Dylan. Come to the late sixties. Cream and Hendrix dominate the land but there’s still room for the next big supergroup. I heard Robert say once that “we were not gonna do that bubblegum crap!” He’s of course referring to that Herman’s Hermits/Gerry & Pacemaker/Merzy sound. Zeppelin made sounds that weren’t there before them. It was absolute precision all around within the four members. Then comes VH in the late seventies to save heavy rock from extinction. It’s safe to say that they did. And no one can be Eddie. No one. He invented what EVERYONE tried to replicate during the span of the eighties.

@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine back in the day The Who opened for The Beatles and Stones from 1961 to 1964. No animosity with those guys. Townshend did not have a problem with Page or Zep at that time. They were all friends. Most of those bands all got along well with each other and friends to this day.

Without question, this would have been my favorite rock band of all time. Forming a band with all named herein was actually proposed at one time but these plans were “stalled on contractual hassles”. When the first Jeff Beck Group formed with Rod Stewart, Beck wanted a band name and identity but the manager, Mickie Most, wanted to continue riding on the success of “Hi Ho Silver Lining” (the A-side title, Beck’s Bolero was the B-side) with the Jeff Beck moniker.

Amen to everything you just commented on, Bc! Thank god, Mickie was outmaneuvered between these two excellent bands! What worked for Jeff would never have worked with Led Zeppelin! He always insisted on too much control! Good work, Peter Grant! Nice one!

Zeppelin came down to pure unadulterated chemistry amongst the members to form a synergy of brilliance. Thanx Mr Page for being aware of the magickall workings that could be created by doing that...he is and will always be a genius

Enjoyed this. I had heard this before and "got into it" with a woman from another KZbin video who told me in no uncertain terms that all these stories are nonsense: none of it ever happened because all the musicians involved were all so tightly controlled by their managers and contracts. I think I like the way things turned out anyway. I like The Who for what they are and like Led Zeppelin for who they are. And Jeff Beck really did predate Zeppelin with his Truth LP and I heard that he was not too happy when he heard the "acetate" for Led Zeppelin I and then Rod Stewart goes and burns him by joining the Faces behind his back.

Thanx, Edward! You know there are far too many sources backing these stories up, sources substantiated by sources who did get along, or didn’t like each other etc… We’ll get to the Bottom Line of it in the end!😉

Just to clarify, Rod Stewart didn't "burn" Jeff Beck by joining Faces behind his back. Jeff had already broken up the band in July 1969 having sacked Ronnie Wood then re-hiring him. Rod Stewart didn't join Faces until October 1969 and had signed a solo deal separately with Lou Reizner's MERCURY label the year before, on the proviso that he could not record before July 69. I think that was sufficient notice for Jeff Beck to find a replacement if he wanted to keep the band going, but Jeff was demoralised by the US Tour of 1968 and was looking for new direction by then. They still managed to produce another album together and do two more US Tours before Jeff broke up the band in late July. Jeff Beck Group were also listed on the promo material for WOODSTOCK in Aug 1969 but had split up by then, with Ronnie Wood inviting Rod to come and meet the boys in FACES with a view to joining them....which he did in October... remember Rod already had his solo deal working by July, and had also recorded a demo session of 3 songs with Python Lee Jackson (including the hit "In A Broken Dream") at the request of his friend John Peel who produced the sessions. That session in April 69 coincided with the recording of the Beck-ola album, so Rod was still very committed to the band right through 1969. I'd say the sacking of his mate Ronnie Wood (with Micky Waller having gone already) would have been the final thing for Rod to decide it was time to move on and look after himself.

@@bobinscotland And Jimmy Page put the nail in the coffin LOL. I saw The Jeff Beck Group at Fillmore East in May 1969. It was the first concert I ever saw at that fabled establishment and quite possibly the worst. You may remember that Jeff, in his book, pretty much disavowed drug use during the 60's with the possible exception of a rare "toke". But he said he and his bandmates were not above a "drinkie-poo" now and again. On this particular evening they headlined a bill which included NRBQ and Joe Cocker. They came on stage and acted very strange; the music was all over the place. After two lackluster numbers, they put down their instruments and walked off stage (Nicky Hopkins was officially in the band that night). Bill Graham came out shortly and said: "the band has the flu. I apologize but that is the end of the show." I could tell by the tone of his voice he was not a happy camper. Bill did not suffer incompetence well. Anyway, if all you say is true, it wouldn't take much to make this unprofessional bunch of clowns unhappy with one another.

@@edwardgonczy3170 Well-known for drinking... in fact, Faces later had their own bar ON STAGE with them and would serve each other during the songs. Rod had suffered from nerves a lot in those days, often hiding behind the amps and speakers.... not the flamboyant frontman of a couple of years later. I put that down to all his previous bands from 1962 being mainly as a second singer playing harmonica rather than being the front man. All that changed with Faces as he was wanted there and felt he belonged with his old mate Ronnie.

Interesting how Jimmy Page couldn't boss Paul Rodgers, during the the Firm. Which is the main reason why the band broke up. Jimmy reported in a 93 interview, "Paul was hard to get along with." My thoughts on that Jimmy comment, Paul was too established and famous, to be ruled over, even by Jimmy.

The Supergroup that would have resulted would have blown the doors of of Rock. The first zeppelin album was earthshaking. The album by the group that never was would have been released around the time of Jimi Hendrix, but the twin guitars of Beck and Page would have been interesting. The main difference between LZ and the Supergroup is that in LZ Jimmy recruited unknown musicians who evolved into an amazing band while the other group would have been musicians who each had their own identity. Who knows how the SG grown, but LZ grew into an amazingly tight and creative band. I really like Beck's Bolero though.
