The Boss 429 engine was a NASCAR engine detuned in an attempt to work in a street car. With the proper camshaft and carburetor, the were designed to run at 7500+ rpm for hours on end. Most mass produced big block V8s at the time were lucky if their power curve lasted up until 5000 rpm. The Boss 429 was a superspeedway engine, not a drag racing engine.

I have some of the original road tests of the Boss 429 and, without digging them all out of the collection, I recall one test (High Performance Cars), expressed some reservation about the car's performance. Another test I have in front of me, from July 69 Car Life, recorded 14.09 at 103 mph. Top speed was 118 mph with a 3.91 gear. Also, there was a batch of the 69s produced with the wrong valve springs. I was a Ford nut back then and big into the street racing scene in 69-70. I lived in a relatively muscle car intense area (far west suburban Chicago). I saw a grand total of two Boss nines on the street in those days.

Boss 302 was not its predecessor. It ran alongside for a different purpose. From the factory the Boss 351 was faster. Most drag racers of the time preferred the FE 427s over this 429 hemi, until they figured out how to tune them to run.

I drove a 1972 fastback Mustang that came with a 429 SCJ and a C6 auto from the factory. I never had any respect for Fords until I drove that car. Was surprizingly fast - VERY FAST - and even with an automatic it would drop down 15 ft of rubber when it shifted to 2nd gear. The 6 mpg wasn't anything to brag about though - but gas was only 35 cents a gallon back in those days :)

But ya the smaller engined '67 396 Camaro ate the Boss '9's lunch daily and if we called in the dealer 427 swapped camaros they'd be staying for supper too. Not gonna lie though those '69 and 70 429 mustangs are gorgeous cars.

The 1970 Lt1 350 small block was rated the same as the Ford @ 375 hp. The Camaro's are lighter too.. if you compare the 69 ZL1 427 to the Boss 429 there is no comparison hands down that Mustang is toast. I'm not a Ford hater like a lot of Chevy guys but facts are facts that Boss 429 is a beautiful car but she'll go home hungry racing Chevy's.

Well - I used to think the same thing - but the 426 HEMI was rated at 425 hp but actually produced around 475 hp. The 429 SCJ was rated at 375 hp but actually produced over 500 hp and 500 FT torque. The problem with the hemi's was they were too hard tokeep in good tune due to the two 4 barrel carbs
@kimwarfield1587
@kimwarfield1587 2 ай бұрын
@guyski666 I used to tune duel quad systems, and I never saw a Hemi get beat by another car. That's why they were the number one drag motor in those days in our area. I knew a guy that had a rare 428 CJ motor in his 1970 Cougar. It dyno tested at 675 horses. The 68 Stang he had also tested around that horse with the same type of motor. At the drag strip, neither of those beat the Hemi. To many factors affect drag racing. I just know how many guys preferred them to other motors.

The horsepower and torque produced for the same volume of hydrogen fuel would be significantly higher than gasoline in the same internal combustion engine. This is because hydrogen has a much higher energy density than gasoline, so it will produce more power per unit of volume. Overall, hydrogen-powered engines have the potential to produce significantly more power than gasoline engines. For example: If the Boss 429 was powered by hydrogen, it would likely produce around 1500 horsepower and 1200 lb-ft of torque. This would make it one of the most powerful engines ever produced.

Yes because it was vastly restricted from the factory. The 429 scj had the same rating stock
@Loulovesspeed
@Loulovesspeed 6 ай бұрын
Actual HP was significantly higher than 375. Remember, this was the time of Detroit posting lower HP ratings to satisfy insurance companies, and an ever increasing involvement of the government. It might have put out 375 at say 5,000 rpm. But at 6,200, it was more like 475. The real drawback for this monster power house was that Ford designed it for NASCAR, and used porting, camshaft, carburetion, etc. to achieve best results at steady, high speed track conditions. That did not translate to ideal dead start acceleration figures. With some relatively minor work, this engine would destroy most anything else on the street!
