Of the 164s, I especially love the very first years and the very last. Your '75 will probably have 10:1 compression ratio and about 175 rated horsepower, making it the highest performance 164 produced. I'm very interested in watching this car get the TLC it deserves. Hope you enjoy the new car!

I had a 164 around 1980. The most comfortable car you could imagine! mine was a money pit, but I loved it. Fond memories.The back seats were better than any other cars front seats of the time.

That is one beautiful automobile. Obviously very well cared for all of its life. If my memory serves, 164 sedans were all trimmed as a GLE. At least any I have seen have been. Every one has had the same rear seat as this one. The top of the seat backs are notorious for getting sun dried and crumbling. Lovely to see this one in great shape. It will be neat to see the fuel injection system working right. It makes sense about the gas tank. The 164 uses the same body panels in the rear as the newly introduced 240 series, so it would not have made sense to keep producing the panels for the 164 as well as the new panels with the safer design.

The Volvo design team was equipped with a great practical sense at that time, their cars were great, much better than today's designs that are plagued with design errors and chronic reliability problems.

I had a 164E and I still miss it. A wolf in a sheep's cloth. Very nice and stable to drive. But my comment relates to what you said about the steering, it is noisy. It always is even as new but it's not broke it's just the way it is. PS. the "E" is for the Bosch fuel injection.

A limited edition of the 164, the 164TE was made only in 1974 and only for 3 markets, Great Britain, Germany and Australia. The 164TE had extra accessories fitted as standard, being air conditioning, 4 speaker 8 track player with radio, headlight wipe/wash system, rear head rests, rear reading lamps and a fully carpeted boot with lighting. This more upmarket version was only available in 3 colours, being metallic light blue (colour 111), metallic copper (colour 105) and metallic teal (colour 115).

Lovely car David. I have also just bought a 1974 164 (only an E) and take delivery tomorrow. Mine needs a lot of restoration as it's been standing outside for 17 years! Although yours may have been sold in 1975 I think it is a 1974 model. 1975 has the handbrake in the middle, wider 264 style tail lights and cast alloy rear badges and maybe some other small changes.
@mikaelleskinen13492 жыл бұрын
Your right,last year the 164 was built were 1974.From 1975 Volvo built the 264/265 with the awful renault enginge.
@clivepage70162 жыл бұрын
No, actually the 164 continued to be produced alongside the 264 for for the USA market for 1975. See extract from Wikipedia page "For 1975, the PRV engine was not available for the American market so the 164 was produced for one more year for the American and Japanese markets only although a few were sold . The 164 received new larger 6-panel rear lamps sometime during the 1975 model year, electronic ignition, new seats, electric windows in the front, a new style of badging, extensive changes to the rear suspension, and the parking brake handle was moved from outboard to inboard of the driving seat." - Wiki. As David's car has none of these changes I believe it to be a 1974 model but there are 1975 164's out there.

The 74 164E I had was the same color with light blue leather interior. Wished it had been a 4 speed OD. It was a garage queen before I bought it but the paint had oxidized badly despite being relatively shelters for the first eight years. That is a clean car, though. Based on your other works, you do a nice job on this one.

The 164-1975 was sold i America only. The 264 was avalible in Sweden (no 164 avalible here in 1975) but it did not pass the emission test in US so Volvo made a hybrid 164 with 264 interrior, dash and rear boddy from the firewall and back 1975, 1976 the 264 was ok for US market. That there looks moore like a 1974 164.

The charge regulator is screwed on the inside steel panel up to the wheel. So very exposed to water. When the steel panel was rusted, the contact either to the charger to the panel or the panel to the frame, was bad, and it blow. The best, not the most esthetic, is to install a good wire between the charger and the engine, where is bolted the alternator and the positive battery wire bolt to the started. It is important to understand that this charger was the first step to a fully digital one, so it was very sensitiveé to faulty ground.

Nice car David. But are you sure it is a 1975? To me it looks like a 1974. The 1975 should have the 240 seats and dash. Early 1975 builds had the normal 4 bulbs rear lights while the late ones had the 6 bulbs rear lights like the 264. Check the chassis number.
@Bonzoguy662 жыл бұрын
The last versions, had wider tail-lights ....like the 264
@mikeanderson2730 Жыл бұрын
Nice channel, you seems like a sweet guy with prioritys set on real good cars. But this TE is a little of a mystery. The model should be 1975, but it´s missing some of the most significant features of the 1975 model. In 1975 the whole back were from the 240, the most easy way of controlling that is the handbrake, it should be in the middle, between the seats. Not like this car on the left side. The seatbelts and connectors are not correct for the -75. The -75 had 240 leather interior witch has a different pattern on seams and the very recognizible 240 headrest. There should be a 2 inch wide stainless steel trim on top of the doors, the -75 had aluminium covers on the small lights in the front, last years sunroof where standard equipment, this car has none, the mirrors should be adjustable from the inside, and so on. All of the 1975 had these changes, even a few of the last made 1974 had them. The rims look a bit skinny, the 164 had half an inch wider steel rims with chrome and hubcaps. So it´s a most intriging car. Big thanks to you for taking care of this lost gem, i will follow the restauration! You should probably change the camshaft, this one is (my guess) really worn out, the valves are very quiet on a healthy 164.

EV conversion on a 164. There should be some clues show to do it on a 240. I suspect that you (David ) will not do the electrical yourself. I salute you if you do. But most likely you will pass it to more expert EV wranglers. If you do however please do not skimp on the details in the videos, like I say it could be an excellent "how to" for 2/7/940 owners. And far from desecrating the Volvo marque, the more of these Volvos converted to EV may very well ensure their survival in an increasingly electrical age. I look forward to vids on the EV conversion. Thanks in advance David.
