The 1987 Jaguar XJ6 - An AFFORDABLE Classic (Review and Drive)

This classic 1987 Jaguar XJ6 is the final Series 3 XJ6 and one of the last of the truly vintage Jaguars. The prices on these cars are still very reasonable and they offer vintage British luxury driving at an affordable price.
This is the official project car of the Heavy Metal Horizons channel and I'll be making a series of videos about this car as I fix the various problems that it currently has, as well as make a few period correct upgrades!

France here. I own a 1987 xj12. Same gorgeous looks as the 6 cyl. The v12 brings you 295hp. It's all about wafting along. Some say these cars are notoriously unreliable. That reputation is often due to neglect by previous owners as these are complicated cars that need preventive maintenance. Great video Max.

I'm a proud owner of a series lll 1986 Jaguar XJ-6 of which is my project car that could use some work, and that's the fun of it and for the most pair I have a rust problem that's common to this car, so that'll be happening this summer now that 'll have some additional time on my hands. Excellent review, thank you - well researched & presented. I own one of these, a low mileage, immaculate V12 version, badged as Daimler Double Six. It cost me £12k, which is about $16k (in Jan 2020), and it's really worth paying up for a good one, in my opinion, as repairs can be costly. So I wanted to buy one that had everything fixed already, or was in such good original condition that it didn't need any repairs (e.g. the interior is almost as new, in my 30-year old Daimler). People think these are big soft barges, but they really aren't. I recommend replacing all the suspension & steering bushes, and the dampers, then the car will drive how it was when new - and they're incredible - the most precise steering you can imagine, it goes exactly where it is pointed, and the ride is comfortable but firmer than you might think. Overall, the car feels perfectly balanced, and you can drive it quite fast on twisty roads, with complete confidence. These are not luxury limos, they were designed for the driver who wants to press on, and eat up the miles as quickly as possible. As for the styling - I completely agree with you - this is possibly the most stylish, classic design of all time, for a 4-door saloon car. I remember when the series 3 came out in 1979, and I dreamed about owning one, and now I do! (plus a 4.0 XJS convertible, which is nice, but a bit under-powered).

@@HeavyMetalHorizons Awesome, good luck! It's great to see younger people appreciating the classic Jaguars (and pronouncing the name correctly LOL! Only joking LOL!). For $2500 bucks, you seem to have got a lovely usable classic. Also, they waft along, and are quicker than you think, once you get onto an open road. 120 mph is very quick by 1980s. Enjoy her, and I look fwd to more videos. Detail points - the US headlights are much smaller on the outside. UK headlights are bigger, hence no gaps. As you said, the US bumpers have an extra rubber bit added, the UK bumpers are flush with the chrome bumper. AS REQUIRED BY us LAWS AT THE TIME. Anyway, thanks for a great video, ur a natural presenter - relaxed & knowledgable.

I have just imported a series 3 V12 1992 from Japan, less than 25k on the clock and to all intents and purposes , brand new . However , things are not exactly cheap. The car cost £10k and it came with all Japanese road legal requirements that had to be changed . Speedometer , radio, correct air conditioning gas and other items . It cost me approx another £5k to get the car sorted but it was worth every penny . Modern Jaguar owners just stare open mouthed at it and wonder why their latest epace is like a shopping trolley compared to the magnificent series 3 .

The Jaguars s1-s3 are classic and atylish cars that stood out in an era of some VERY beautiful cars. Today ,the XF/XJ/F-Type are great looking cars which WILL go down as the ,E-Type has as 'Automotive Art'. I have a 1975 Jaguar XJC 4.2 and a 2010 XF and i sometimes put them side by side and appreciate their aesthetic beauty because they are without question gorgeous cars from ANY angle and were deliberately styled to be so. You have bought a stylish European car that can be dustinguished and recognised just by its silhouette -NOT AN EASY FEAT IN TODAYS GREY AND BLAND WORLD IF 'AUTOMOTIVE ❤WHATEVER'. I am a semi retired Jag mechanic. I only work on sports cars to 1974, XJS to 1990. and XJ-6 to 1987. You have two choices as i see it: keep the car and don't put too much money in it and enjoy it, or learn how to work on it yourself, and improve it as you enjoy it. I would charge abut 5 grand to get this car of yours up to snuff. I work on vintage Jags the same reason that John Dillinger robbed banks--because that's where the money is. Again, do it yourself. Plenty of free videos on how to work on these vintage Jags, which do not need any special tools to do so. Good luck and I enjoyed your video.

Interesting video and a great Jaguar. I am in the UK and adore Jaguar's. The bonnet of every Jaguar but in particular the Mk10/420G, XJ Series 1, 2, 3, X300 XJ, X308 XJ and X350 XJ is a truly brilliant view to look out onto. In my previous XJ Series 2's, when it was raining and you pull up at a red traffic light the steam the use to gently rise of the bonnet was so cool to see. Not that the car was overheating, just like when you see mist lifting off a river early in the morning, a beautiful sight. Happy to sub for Jagguar content!

Love it. I bought an 86 xj6 series 3 in June 2020 for $1k. It is rougher than this one but a joy to drive and it has been reliable despite some quirks. Like you said it’s a great escapade pod from daily life problems when you can just find some time to enjoy the ride. Best thing I have done so far is to replace the horrible stock steering wheel. Totally improves the driving feel/experience

That dual fuel tank setup is what stopped me from buying one. I read a post a long time ago and it stated that Jag, or someone came up with a counting tube to join the fuel tanks. You had to fill real slow to get both tanks.

Hi from Sydney , Australia , I have recently sold to a mate, my 1974 series1 long wheelbase XJ6 I owned it near 40 years. Series i's had the tall diecast brass & chromed front grill & the low set steel slim line bumper. I bought it with 18,200 miles on it , was a custom ordered & built car , when i sold it just a couple of years back it had 179,000 miles on it , :- re reliability ONCE in november 1982 I called the auto club it didn't want to start , ISSUE , when I pushed the shifter into park , the wire plug connector came off the park/neutral inhibitor switch. I drove it on holidays with absolute confidence around this huge country. Everything worked , I loved it & looked after it well. The frenchman whom ordered it new requested the prior Jag MK10 triple SU carby set up , Aussies had no smog nor pollution laws back then so it was a full power export spec car, with the extra carby & the factory high output bronze head , it put out 296 hp direct from factory , so a good 100 plus more than your car, so mine was quick. In the last 14 months of series 1 production the long wheelbase car was introduced & in all variants mere 2600 body shells created , out of 98,000 series 1's in total, so a rare car , by series 3, all 3's were on the 4" longer LWB platform. All series 1,2, & 3 Jags drive like no other car, when new ex-factory there were extra handling packages that could be spec'd when ordering the car new , or , added later. Additionally there were a bunch of various automatic's that could ne ordered , the one in your car the BW 66 was base spec , additionally you could have a GM thm400, or a Borg Warner type 12A this was a kind of mix of a C4 & C6 in "ford speak" but came with all the internal goodies from the factory , ie, manualised, stall converter kit , etc etc. This the 12A was premium version & what was fitted to the most powerful early V12's in the series 3 e type Jags. Good luck with your project these are vastly undervalued cars, sadly because of this the financial incapacity of some owners would help in the loss & destruction of these Jags. I still own the "father" of this car , a 1967 MK10 /420G, all series 1,2 & 3 XJ6's were basically a cost cut lighter version of the MK10 first introduced in late 1961, the xj was shortened made slightly more narrow & with bolted on front fenders , whereas the MK10's were longer , wider , heavier , and featured fully welded on front fenders & nose cone, plus a cast steel bolt on front subframe (to carry/mount engine steering & suspension to) , rather than the cheaper pressed steel version of XJ6 , in 10 years Jaguar made 24,000 MK10 variants , however in XJ 1 & XJ 2's Jaguar made over 10 times that amount , so the xj series was Jaguars first real attempt at true mass production. Although he 6 cylinder version of the series 3 XJ finished in 1987 , the final V12 series 3 XJ left the factory in late 1992, and even more amazing , the huge Daimler DS420 Limousine based on a longer chassis/subframe pressing of the MK10 also left the Jaguar factory in late 1992, it also used the same 4.2 litre engine as your car, the DS420 had been in series production since june 1968 , with basically just front & rear bumper upgrades, this was the last car to use the 6 cylinder Jag XK engines , made from 1948 to 1992. As an aside , here in Australia , some owners have retro fitted the earlier slim line chrome bumpers to their s3's , dumping the heavy crash bumpers in favor of the much prettier slim line steel ones front & rear , then fitting the matching slim line front under bumper indicator & parking light assemblies same as fitted to the euro & Aussie S2's , where as stateside on the series 2 xj's again you had the big chunky crash bumpers, so with the fine slim line bumbers the car than looks like a real 190's classic car . Again , good luck with your car.

OK Max, what you said about the ride of the XJ-6 is exactly on point. Roll up those windows and everything outside is locked out, it cruises so nicely. If you ever have a chance to drive an XJ-S V12, take it. I got to drive a few of them back in the late 1980's. All I can say is, what a cool driving car. Enjoy the ride and working on it.

Nice! I have had three Jags I leased a 94 XJ6, bought a 1998 XJ8L and now drive a 2003 Vanden Plas. Very affordable cars when you buy them pre owned and very reliable. The lease Jag I never spent a dime on the 98 I only had to replace an alternator and wheel bearing the same cost of repairing a Ford Taurus! My 2003 I had to do an alternator and just last week I did the water pump and all the coolant hoses, cross over and thermostat housing all for around $200.00 less the cost of the anti freeze and gasket sealer etc. I got my newer Jags because the resemble the older ones with the 4 headlights, leaper on the hood, I wish they kept the two gas caps in the back that is my only complaint. 2003 being the last of the all steel Jags and the last that really looked like the older ones!

I had one of these cars back in the 90s, it was black and very classy. Everything worked but what I didn't know when I bought it was that it was involved in a rear-end collision that resulted in the car having a clip put on. From the looks, there was almost no way of knowing until the rear tires wore out rather fast. After buying 2 sets of rear tires I took it to a body shop to check the straitness of the body(frame) that's when I found out about the crash and how badly it was fixed. Sad to say I got screwed and let the car go for near to nothing as a donor car. But I remember how cool it was.

That's really unfortunate. A friend of mine bought the V12 model about 10 years ago, and he was really lucky. He paid 2800, drove it for about year or two, and then resold it for over 3000. So he basically just paid the repairs for the experience of driving one of these for a while.

I am too lazy to learn the new technology of the 6 liter V-12 from the 5.3 V-12, and the new 6 cylinder engine. Both of which, the 6 liter and the 6 cylinder, required new proprietary tools. I actually started my Jaguar journey on Mark 1's and XK-120's. I am a relic of Jaguars gone by. Sincerely, Christopher Charles.

I had an 88XJ6 well it was my mom that she sort of gave to me and I have had many BMWs from convertibles, small ones /big ones to Mercedes, infinity, and that old Jag was my favorite…. Just imagine being a teenager in a small town driving that. One day I would like to purchase another one I love that old design from the 80s but I may have to sacrifice that to get a little more modern and no problems at a good price.

First thing you should do, is check and retorque (maybe even overtorque) headbolts. If headgasket goes, it's downhill from there. Otherwise very reliable engine if you can get rid of oil leaks :) I have 1986 JX6 and it's been quite an adventure. Something that looks easy, actually is very hard to do, because bolts are impossible to reach and stuff like that. AC unit has it's own fuse that is also connected to AC compressor clutch. If that fuse is gone, nothing on AC unit works.

I've owned my '94 XJ40 since 2007. I had my eyes on these series III cars but there are few things that put me off. Less performance, 3 speed transmission, inboard rear brakes, no airbags but I admit these series III XJs are the most beautiful Jaguar sedans. My XJ40 is a base model, regency red with barley interior. How are the exterior door handles holding up on these cars? All 4 broke on mine. Bought 3 extra, two of them broke then I said f@ck it and I reinforced them and now they're all good. Cracked solder joints are responsible for the electrical issues. Easy fix. Try putting ATP AT205 in the oil. Helped the rear main seal in mine. I also prefer the '80s old school Heavy/Power/Thrash stuff. Started growing my hair in 2013. Yeah, good times.

@@HeavyMetalHorizons Hello! My car doesn't have too much Lucas stuff but a lot of Bosch. There are several relay modules throughout the car. They are in a rectangular black plastic housing. The printed circuit board can be removed and the solder joints reflown. They cause non operating electric seats, radio, etc. I also removed the fuse boxes from the L and R footwells to redo the solder joints. The XJ40s have two a/c blowers under the dash. If one is not working then it's probably a darlington transistor or in my case it was a cracked solder joint of the B4 fuse in the left fuse box. I didn't spend a lot of money to fix these issues. In the earlier models that have half analogue half digital cluster those suffer from cracked joints and don't display correctly. Also all the ground points are worth checking. Looking forward to see more of your project.

I watched this because a friend is trying to sell me his. Its an 85 but hasn't moved in 8 years. I need something to work on but I'm not sure about this one. It wasn't getting gas from the tanks and he couldn't figure it out. I'm sure I can fix it but IDK. I offered him $400, he came back with 5 and I'm on the fence.

If the body is in good shape I would go for it! Fuel problem could be the fuel pump in the truck.

@@HeavyMetalHorizons Just bought it. Talked to his brother and turns out he drove it 5 miles 3 months ago. I thought it hadn't moved in 8 years. Radiator leaks, tranny line leaks, and someone stole the radio. He got it running by putting a boat tank in the trunk. Body is surprisingly good. When a car sits it goes here in PA. There must be an 8th inch of undercoating on it, which I think saved it. Looks like I got a project. Be careful what you wish for.

I find it odd that anybody would call this a slow car. I mean it’s not fast as in properly fast, but it will still destroy plenty of modern econo boxes. The UK version was rated 205bhp interestingly. Not idea why this is only 176

Don't get me wrong, I love this car. But I don't think anyone could seriously call this fast. Top speed of 116. 0-60 in 11 seconds (at best, some listings are over 12). Which modern econo boxes would this destroy? It's hard to find any modern car that isn't faster than this. Anyway... my point is that this car is still wonderful despite being slow. It'll take you longer to reach your destination, but you will enjoy the journey more.

@@HeavyMetalHorizons I think your doing well to just stand your ground and move on concerning the fast/slow argument. We XJ6 owners are VERY BIASED toward all the negatives of the car. I own a beautiful 1984 British Green Series 3. The truth? Poor corroded electrical connection’s and, by majority standards, the car is kinda slow regarding acceleration. Jaguar made it clear in the booklets, IT DOESN’T ACCELERATE, IT ADVANCE’S!! In all fairness, it was never advertised as a Fast, Sporty 4000lb Sedan. There! An owner said it. Good luck with your experience with a fine example of British engineering and styling.(minus this LUCAS guy and HIS electronics🤣)

@@anthonym3769....The versions sent to the U.S were strangled by emission regulations. The zero to sixty times are actually around eight seconds, and top speed is around 125 - 130 region.

Highly under valued cars.. Look for a Barn find series 2 XJC 4.2 Pillarless 2 Door coupe for a great investment ( seriously sort after in europe.) Max.. buy some leather feed spray & a bottle of leather dye for the interior its a easy DiY job & will totally transform the seats

I'm looking for a XJ12 coupe as an investment. These cars at some point will seriously appreciate in value (they already started to rise noticably, 10 years ago you could find a nice one for under 5000, now you need to spend 10-15 for a regular XJ12 in good condition. The V12 version was built in much smaller numbers than the E-Type...

Get yourself some Dayton Jaguar chrome wire wheels, and absolutely get rid of those hideously defacing dealer applied horizontal rubber and chrome bumper strips stuck across the body exterior of all four doors, and don’t destroy the cool look of the interior with one of those out of place, ugly wood rim steering wheels. Keep that original leather wrapped one. If you want to do something to enhance it, I’ve seen where the top third of the rim was replaced with wood that matched the wood accents on the interior. It looked like the factory had designed it that way - quite a stunner.
