One should never review 1989 MB 420 SEL wearing that kind of outfit.

My grandfather had one of those...he drove it for about 20 years before giving it away to someone that took care of his place in Florida. What a car that was - this is exactly how it was, phone and all. His was in phenomenal condition, just like this one. Wish we still had it...great memories. What a car that was...

I owned two 420-SELs between 2003 and 2017. Both were bought second (or third or more) hand. Both were very expensive to maintain. Contrary to your observation about them being slow, the silent ride very often caused me to drive too fast, and when I gunned the accelerator, the car jumped very quickly into high speed mode. I recall driving in a snow storm in westernmost Washington and Oregon and never felt frightened. I was in a armored tank. I once accidentally hit another car. My bumper didn't even have a scratch but the other sedan had its left door severely dented. My insurance rate however did suffer for while. In 1957, I learned to drive in my Father's 190SL And I briefly owned a 1967 220S; briefly because it was a lemon.

I have seen these cars when they were new at the Mercedes Benz showroom in Monterey California during that time. The cost of the Mercedes Benz 420SEL and 560SEL was the price of a home in the late 80s. To own these high end W126 S-Class during that time the buyers income had to be substantial and affluent. During that time, the Mercedes-Benz 300E W124 was my league and the 300E had a huge price tag of $48,000 lots of money that time where I leased it. Great cars though and ahead of its time. Today's new Mercedes are awesome too. Thanks for sharing. My Best, M.L.

Thanks for posting. I owned two of these the 420sel and the 560sel. Great cars. If you purchase do your research on maintenance issues, these cars are over 30 years old now and will require some attention. Lots of little plastic pieces that break due to age and heat. Many parts are hard to find or longer produced. Most importantly, these cars had plastic timing chain guides that will need to replaced because of age. Great cruising sedans. Not particularly quick off the line but great highway driving.

This one has 204hp. European models got a performance upgrade around 87/88 which incresed the hp to 224 for the 420. I have one of those and its pretty agile. Pulls good up to 190 km/h, after that it tkes a while to reach like 220/230 which is VMax

420 slow?? Wrong! US model only. The European was about 85 bhp more, which keeps pulling until about 190-200 km/h. The torque and quietness on those speeds is simply impressive

Cool Clip, but let me give you a small correction, directly from germany (as you ca see at my poor schoolenglish). No Cupholder ? Germans never drink and eat in their cars ? Open the glove box ! Sure a very small cupholder, but germans also can drink, but only during the car's are parking.
@RyanHooshmand2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! This car has an airbag in place of the glove box
@bobbbobb46632 жыл бұрын
IIRC the passenger airbag was an option on the U.S. W126’s in 1988 and 1989. It might have been standard around 1990 but I would have to dig up my old dealer brochures to confirm. In terms of the cup holder on previous cars, it is laughably shallow and backs up the point that it is only to be used for parking.
