I really enjoyed the Honda CRV, as this was was even mine, but I am very happy with where crossover's have gotten to and am excited to see where they'll end up!

From a practicality standpoint our CRV was great (this was my CRV that we owned for 2-3 months) Had 145km or about 95k miles. Was good but we didn’t fall in love with it so we replaced it with that Mazda. Happy cruising! They’re decent cars and super practical for their size!

Funny thing about the CR-V, although it’s sloppy in stock form it’s a polyurethane bushing kit and coilovers away from being reasonably sporty. I think it’s super cool that Honda put double wishbone suspension on a people mover like the RD1 makes it a very unique platform.

I loved that bit about them not being fun to drive. I love my ‘98 CR-V so so much. It’s such a beautiful car, it’s stylish, good gas mileage, decent off-road potential, it’s small enough to drive through the city… But I’ll be damned if that car doesn’t make me feel like I’m gonna topple over every time I take a turn even remotely fast. 😂

that mazda has like one inch of ground clearance haha and the first gen cvr you could actually take about anywhere you wanted
@200degrees
@200degrees 2 жыл бұрын
That's fair, I won't disagree the CRV had better ground clearance. I was hoping to compare the old CRV to a new CRV/CX30 kind of thing because I think the same thing stands, they're more fun now, and those newer ones would have similar ground clearance to the older one. But we ended up selling the CRV because it wasn't going where we wanted, on 3 different trips we had to turn around because the AWD wasn't up to the trails we were on, so we bought the Mazda for daily driving and a dedicated 4x4 for exploring.

Amazing car. Owned one for 13 years, 'awd' with a manual. That thing was so easy to drift in snow.

I'm sure I would have liked it more if it was a later model with more HP, or a stick shift model as it would have been a sweet winter setup!

Fantastic editing! After watching this, I was expecting to see around 80k subs- but seeing only 405 earned you my subscription.I myself just bought an RD1 CRV after selling my MR-2. Turns out I needed something better in mud and snow- so mid-engined wasn't cutting it. Your explanation of the vehicle is perfect- But in the areas where i disagree (it not being fun to drive), I disgree entirely because I have the 5 speed. I wasn't going to settle for an auto, and I beleive an RD1 without the 5 speed is wasted potential.
@200degrees
@200degrees 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! I appreciate the review and I am excited to try out a 5 speed one day, I think what hurt this one is the earlier cars 98/99 I think has less hp, on top of the auto didn’t give my RD1 the best foot forward. So with some suspension mods and a 5 speed the crv can really wake up and I’ll try and get behind the wheel one day! Cheers

There is difference between understeer and being slow to get reactions. First Gen CRV is sluggish but it has less understeer of most of the modern crossovers.

If this had been a 5 speed and a later model 99-01 then I’d have been much more interested, more power and the 5 speed would have been lovely. This earlier lower power auto 98 was not so fun haha Enjoy the season!

I am still driving my Red 2001 CRV. I purchased it new and 22 years later I am still driving it. It is such a pretty shade of red, the interior shows no wear-n-tear, The interior looks new. The exterior one rust over one of the back wheels. I never had to utilize the spare tire on the back of the car. It has all of its original parts. The car has never stopped on me or fail to turn over. I have driven past many new and expensive cars that were waiting for roadside assistance. The needs new brake lines. I cannot take it to a Honda Dealer, because they will find something wrong with it so that I will buy a new are. Firestone is not trustworthy.

I remember when Ford announced a few years ago that they were dropping all cars in the U.S. market except for the Mustang, in favor of crossovers. Sounded like a terrible idea at the time. Crossovers now dominate but people still buy large numbers of cars, just not American ones. Shortly after the announcement, Ford CEO Jim Farley said in an interview that a Ford crossover built on the same (unibody) platform as one of their cars lost just 1-2 mpg relative to the car version. And just as importantly, Ford could switch their common platforms back to coupe/sedan/station wagon quickly and inexpensively if that's the way the market went. Advantage now is that Ford's money and engineering time are focused on the segments where they are the most successful. That said, I'd personally love to see them have just one hot hatch in their lineup here. The Europeans are spoiled for choice on fun, small cars designed by Ford.

I remember being quite sad when Ford announced cancelling all the cars. But I get why they did. I quite liked the Fusion sport, and I'll miss the Super Fun Fiesta ST! I'd love to head to Europe and review dozens of hot hatches! haha Thanks for watching!

Be frankly, as a RD1 owner I gotta say that in stock RD1 feels wobbling and floating. Once you modified & lowered the shock absorbers, it instantly feels like an EK wagon RD1 might have a great chassis, but that 4 speed auto just ruined the entire car ( I’m fine with 148bhp B20Z) especially our GOV don’t let us swap the engine & transmission, we can’t even put a turbo on it :(
@200degrees

Oh that’s unfortunate, where do you live? Luckily here in Canada even though stock it was only okay we can at least modify them to make them better!

@@200degrees I lives in Taiwan, our laws, DMV & MOTC sucks :( meanwhile, I do have some crazy idea on my RD1. I'm trying to build a mild-hybrid version (because our law doesn't forbid us add hybrid system on the car), but still have lots of work to do.

I still have to drive a stick shift crv, but it would have to be very impressive to make me choose it over the Mazda. The on road manners are completely different. However the crv does have more clearance and interior space, the Mazda has new styling cues which makes the inside much smaller.

@@200degrees the manual is awesome typical honda 90s shifter a little clunky sometimes especially putting it in reverse requieres a little clutch lifting to help it go in but all in all its nice 5th gear a little shirt as ill be doing 3500rpms @120kmph. (70mph ish)

Hondas were not catagorized as a crossover it was meant to be a mini recreational vehicle, for like camping and traveling outdoors. Well here the U.S didnt know what to make of it like everything else they come up with. 😉 But hey lets be realistic here now, Japan makes one hell of an engine. Every body should engineer like Japan ...Germany made is a total rip off. If i wanted platic parts in my engine i would ll buy a model toy car. Ever lasting engines are the key to a great car...any car....for example put just one powerful honda engine in every make of car. 😉
@200degrees
@200degrees 2 жыл бұрын
haha well we used it for multiple camping trips all around BC and it did quite a good job so I guess Honda had some Merrit there! haha And yea Japan has some great motors, I've owned 30+ cars now and I really enjoy American V8's with stick shifts for the brute simplicity of it, and I love my high revving Japanese motors that are really fun to drive and are relaible. Having one of each is a great pair of cars for me.

Look for a Honda CRV Model 2 (2002-2006). Even with high mileage, they can run for a long time. And in this model, you'll find the hidden camping table in the trunk..On snow, they are very good, if you buy winter tires. The 4x4 will start automatically, when necessary.

Man this kinda put me off from buying a CRV. I am now a bit confused: is it really not that fun to drive? I don’t really have any examples in my country and I have to import one. I like them and other reviewers stated that they are like a raised civic from a driving standpoint thanks for the double wishbone suspension. I currently drive a 1997 US made Accord Wagon and it is a very rewarding or somehow satisfying drive.

If you get a manual, or a later model rd1 with more power than the earlier ones than it’s better, and the suspension is easy to upgrade, but I didn’t enjoy driving my early, auto one. They’re fine but it didn’t do anything for me.

I really want to try a manual RD1, that would likely help it out quite a bit as the automatic was lethargic and the gear spacing was way too wide.
