Another pricey consideration, as it now seemingly is for every new Strixhaven commander that has white in its identity, is Anointed Procession. Not only does it double the tokens you need to pay the mana costs, it also doubles your avatars. Evil.

I think the front side works really well with the discard draw spells and wheels in red. They do not give you card advantage, but with the commander you have card advantage.

Because Extus is a creature on your graveyard, you can also use black cards that returns him from the graveyard to your hand so you can avoid commander tax too

One card which works well with constantly recasting a high cmc commander is flamekin herald from commander legends (it still works with a commander that's a sorcery). I think that card is underappreciated in general.

Oh god please no, we already have that in historic and the deck is such a pain to deal with. They had to ban cauldron familiar from standard for a reason and I think its about time they do the same to historic. Card is absolutely absurd in there, theres not enough fast hate to deal with it on turn 1-2 for most decks. And claim the firstborn can go ahead and such my preverbal d**k.

I must note that the front side has a Mage raft that’s not a “may” ability. Meaning you have to add creatures to your hand... the colours it’s in though want thing in the grave usually... so, yeah, the sorcery side is what I’d focus on too.

Played my first game with him today and it was really fun. I used a lot of the typical aristocrats stuff, especially effects that put tokens onto the battlefield when my creatures die. Also put a focus on using instants/sorceries that need me to sacrifice creatures as an additional cost. I can say: Swinging with three blood avatars at once is awesome.

I've been running an Awaken the Blood Avatar deck for awhile and I can honestly say it's extremely fun. Of course running token generators is a must but what I overlooked is a card like Ghired's Belligerence which is a red boardwipe and token populater for every creature that dies to it. A definite fun wincon that I'm anxious to cast one day.

Bloodghast and street wraith are also great add ons for the recurring fodder and street wraith combos with extus somewhat. Also, tymna and tana are great commanders for the card in the 99; as a recurring spell you can keep casting over and over again with regrowth effects.

I was just thinking, hidden stockpile would be another decent card card to run in this build. Downside would be that you only get to generate 1 servo token everytime you sac a creature for the spell. However you also gain access to scrying as well.

I'd definitely include Song of the Worldsoul and Anointed Procession in this deck as well. Both the Blood Avatar and the tokens you're saccing to get it out will thank you for it. Also, if you use instants and sorceries for token summoning, you can use creatures with a cheap cycling cost for carddraw purposes!

I love the flavor/fluff this card has baked in! It is basically the Whisper, Blood Liturgist deck i never built because that would just end up as a generic black reanimator deck on the weaker side (and because i already have a Gonti, Lord of Luxury deck doing the same thing to ETB Gonti over and over again...) But this... this is a warlock doing a ritual with sacrifices. in Mardu.

A good commander for putting this in the 98 might be a Ravos + Dargo pair. Ravos can grab Extus from your graveyard to hand for you to recast Awaken the Blood Avatar, and Dargo has the same sacrifice clause as the sorcery. They could also be interchangeable as commanders if you feel like it. Not really focused that way, but both plans work with a generalized Aristocrats package.

I’m definitely going to build around this guy, however I’m focusing more on the ability to copy the sorcery. The avatar isn’t legendary, so copying it multiple times using all the copy effects in red allows for you to create an insane number of avatars, throw in anointed procession and get even more tokens. Making this Mardu opens up so many opportunities.

Honestly, this is a pretty flexible card that I could slotting in a decent amount of Mardu builds. For one, I think this actually fits pretty decently into a token-heavy and combat-heavy Edgar Markov deck - considering how many / how fast that deck churns out tokens, could easily see this being cast for 2 and the creature side can actually get back some key vampire pieces with just some staple instants / sorceries. Personally, I run a token heavy Queen Marchesa deck that I think this could sub in perfectly for. Only thing I'm potentially worried about is losing the built-in card advantage by taking Marchesa out and potentially running into a boardwipe / stax-y opponent who grinds my strategy to a halt. But I think in the average / casual meta, this would definitely hose and still think it could be fun to try!

How about the Sorcery side paired with Tergrid. On first cast you pay with tokens or puny creatures. What the opponents sacrifice you steal with tergrid and then it loops for mana for as long as the opponent with the fewest creatures can sustain you. The tax can get tricky though here.

Also if you play Extus in the ninety-nine of Alesha, you could use her to bring Extus to the battlefield and then something like Erratic Portal to bounce him to your hand in order to keep playing the Awaken side

For the card in the 99, how about Vial Smasher+Ravos? Each turn you can return the card with Ravos to your hand as the front side is a creature and cast the sorcery to deal 8 to your opponents with Vial Smasher.

You could also throw dargo into this deck to have a 7/5 trample super early. If you haven’t looked into it a dargo deck it casts dargo super early so I have a turn 3 or 4 commander damage death.

Would consider Requiem Angel and Teysa, Orzhov Scion as they dont care if the creatures that die under your control are tokens or not only the creature type/colour. In a sense they double the amount of available sacrifices.

You can use Extus with creatures that have cycling, cast a instant/sorcery take creature with cycling, cycle that creature, cast another instant/sorcery take the creature with cycling again, cyle that creature again and there goes on, he become very interesting with creatures cards that can discard themselves for someting. Extus is good with instants/sorceries that requires creature sacrifice to cast like village rites, you cast village rites, sacrifice a creature, them extus hability you take that creature back. While i liked the sorcery part, i will make my deck build for both of them because i think Extus is good as well

The fact is that that sorcery has no commander tax in the rigth deck. So when you are setting up you can Play the creature part and after your op sorcery. Strong strong strong a very intresting combo win in you command zone

Funny idea to use both in an insanly strong synergy. And that with a underused card: Soul Separator Cast the Rakdos side, use Sould Sepatator on the commander in the graveyard, return the commander to the command zone. Voila you can use the spell from the command zone again while having the 3/6 token and a 1/1 legendary flying version of Extus and a 2/4 Zombie. Now you could return a creature card from your graveyard to your hand whenever you cast Awaken the Blood Avatar.

I built this deck in exactly this way yesterday 😂 some other good includes - Teysa, Orzhov Scion and Reqiuem Angel both let you double your mana production. Hero of Precinct One is also good though not as good. Big one though is Neheb the Eternal, off just one blood avatar attack you get 12 red mana post combat. I’ve had a few practice draws that found me with four or more blood avatars on turn 6 😂

I think Tormod, the Descecrator would work ok in this deck due to synergizing with both sides of the commander. IE make lots of token zombies, then sac the commander and then use your tokens to cast the sorcery side.

This is the first card I ever pre-ordered. Extus has "Shenanigans" written all over him. Open The Graves and Desecrated Tomb are going to be fun with this guy. It does bring up two interesting questions, however. Does the Commander Tax apply to Awaken The Blood Avatar each time you cast it? If so, can the optional Sacrifice cost reduce the Commander Tax on it as well?

I understand that.some people don't want to run this or play with it, but Negan would appreciate Awaken the Blood Avatar as another way to get opponents to sacrifice creatures and get treasures. Also, Extus can get creatures like Fleshbag Marauder, Merciless Executioner, and Plaguecrafter back for repeated use. I am considering picking one of these up to have an interchangeable commanders for tables who overwhelmingly don't want to face a Walking Dead commander. He seems sick!

Just finished building this exciting deck and really have to recommend Pain Magnification. The avatar tokens deal 3 damage to each opponent, so now all your opponents will be discarding on every attack!

This actually seems nuts in my wife's Jirina Humans tribal/Aristocrats deck. Exus is on tribe and exactly fits the playstyle, and the Blood tyrant is an excellent sacrifice outlet that hurts opponents and provides a solid body.

Genesis Chamber would be a good include for this deck. Less than a dollar currently and spits out a token when you a non-token creature ETBs.. Blink, flicker, cast a creature, get a myr token for each non-token creature on the side.
