Just like you stated... when dealing with heavy leaves...the key is to mulch the leaves as much as possible...without the bagger...then add the bagger once all the leaves have been mulched. This method prevents you from having to dump the bagger as often.

I run Ferris 61" Z3x with X-Blades (freakin awesome) and Jumbo accelerator bag. Leaf cleanups I attach a Tarp bag extension onto the bag. I picked this tip up from Countryside's Tube channel and it works great. Takes some time to get efficient putting on/off but well worth it once you learn it. I can give you the basics of the bag...Harbor Freight Heavy Duty tarp 5' 6" x 7' 6" ($3.99) in Michigan. Zip ties and gorilla tape. That size bag adds 44,5 cubic feet to your 6 cubic foot accelerator bag. The other tip is don't ever pay for the dust covers use duct or Gorilla tape. On the accelerator bag I tape off ALL operator side holes on the side of the bag. I then use a heavy duty tarp and cut out a piece of tarp using the bottom of the bag as a template and I attach that to the top of the bag as a dust channel with Gorilla tape on all sides of the tarp except on the door end. Leave that end loose for air and dust to come out. This dust channel allows the bag to breath allowing for good grass air exchange to fill up your bag and keep a lot of the dirt and debris off the operator. This will not work on the Ballard Bag due to the placement of their handles. This works well on my sit down ZTR also. The X-Blades create a huge amount of air turbulence under the deck and creates a lot of blow out during leaf cleanups. I eliminated a lot of the blow out by lowering the deck. You will have to play around with the height adjustment and find that sweet spot for you. You will probably be cutting some grass also but that is okay with me bc I usually run around the yard no more than twice mulching up the leaves first before bagging them. Don't mulch up the leaves too small as then it makes it more difficult to suck up with mower. Also, if you are hand unloading (Blowers or forks or shovels) your trailer or truck bed these Itty Bitty pieces of leaves compact down like cement especially if they are a little damp and makes unloading a real chore. I learned my lesson the hard way. BTW great videos keep them coming can't wait for the umount blower video.. It might just convince me next season to drop 4k..
@primuspilus65004 жыл бұрын
DJC Thanks for the tip bro I'm definitely gonna check that one out. Seems like it will be very useful here up in the Northeast. Here in the suburbs of the Northeast the amount of leaves are super heavy and too much for those types of baggers but the method you suggested might give the bagger the extra volume it needs to work. My buddy runs one of the largest Exmark Laser Z's with the Vac Bag system and you can't even use those for clean ups here, they just fill up too quickly. I'm still using a walk-behind as I just started my business this year. We usually blow leaves into wood lines or use vacs to load into trucks or dump trailers. For years I've used tarps with grommets and line to haul leaves to wood lines with great success. Stanley DirtMonkey had one in a video of his recently he called it a Leaf Burrito or Taco but he wasn't using the line. I use the line to create a type of tarp-net and then draw it closed and drag it to the dumping spot.
@toddhacker10614 жыл бұрын
Can you attach a pic of that set up? I have Z2 with Jumbo. With x blades I think 3" is my sweet spot. I have to run over more, Accelerator fills up about same with dry mulch it seems. Learning as I go. Definitely more risky/ambitious this year. Got x blades on yesterday. I think they ARE getting it done faster. I think my new "leaf removal rate" is simply 75/hour. Simplifies it but seems to be about right for all costs involved. Solo operator of course. What do you think?

A few tips for leaf cleanup. Start at the outside and continually blow towards the center. It chops the leaves up and consolidates what’s left to easily get up. Also bag mowing in reverse if your machine can. That has the leaves under deck for a longer amount of time and chops them much finer.

I got a demo accelerator for my 52 inch Toro Grandstand and I absolutely love it. I got the standard size and am thinking about getting the extender option. It takes me about 1 minute to stop/empty/start. The city where I live has weekly yard waste pickup, so I just bag it and go. I built a PVC aperatious to put inside the bags to keep them open. I know this sounds crazy but I blow all the leaves into the street, set the deck at 2.5, put on the accelerator, and just pick up the leaves. It sucks them right out of the gutter!!!! I am looking at getting some 'gator' blades for the stander to mulch the leaves better. I am pumped to come up there Saturday!!!! I try to mulch them up first and then bag. I think the standard size accelerator is 6 bushels.

Great videos thank you 👍 If I could recommend one thing regarding leaf pick up. First of all I’ve been a one man show for 20 years part time, so being part time doing up to 25 lawns a week I really had to hump it (Monday-Friday) mostly. I worked a main job 7-3pm then went out to do these. All that being said I experimented with several different products to go as fast and as efficiently as I could. I bagged with a John Deere LX176 38” cut then I started grinding the leaves up before bagging. Then I towed the biggest pull behind trailer I could find a dumped in there before returning to dump into my truck. These were 1/4 to 3/4 acre properties. Then I bought a Toro ZTurn 52” 3000 series and used an aluminum catcher. Great product but, even after making one or two passes to grind up the leaves, the bagger filled up way to fast so I was right back making 50 trips to the truck to dump. Then I found and bought a Cyclone Rake the biggest one they make. This is the only way to go in my opinion. It takes about 5-10 minutes to set it up. I’ve mowed 12,000 lawns part time in 20 years so this is the best I’ve found to be. Sure it’s $2,000-$2,400, versus $450 for an aluminum bagger but what you gain you’ll spend a lot less time at one property and be flying to your next one. If your property is small and there’s not a ton of leaves then yeah get the aluminum bagger. In my own opinion in this business the key is to buy the best equipment you can get. Take on as many as you can handle in a week then start hiring help. Duplicating yourself several times over is the key as you know. We’re all in search of that one magical piece of equipment for sure. All my 18 years were in Iowa now I’ve moved out west to Montana where Walkers and Toro are king. 90-95 % of people here demand to have their lawn bagged but they can’t tell me why and other people in the green business don’t know why either. A lot of the guys here are buying the Walker high lift the automatic hopper will lift up 67” to dump into your truck, at $29k. Keep those videos coming 👍👍

You can use a piece of metal or a chute blocker over your mowers discharge. The metal if you don’t want to bolt it on you can clamp it on. This will grind up the leaves better than just mowing them with double blades. These leaves I would have went over with my method then go over the strip it leaves a few times. Then open your mower up and blow them out and your done. No picking up leaves ever. You can’t tell where they went and great fertilize for your yard. I’ve been doing this year after year for 20 years no problem at all. Wet leaves it’s way harder.

That is the original version and we brought the design it to the US after agreeing on terms with Ben in Australia. These are made over here. We loved the design after trying all the other brands. Thanks!

Hi Brian, I really enjoy watching your Channel. Question: When using the X- Blade system on your machines; have you ever tried using all mulching blades?
@BriansLawnMaintenance3 жыл бұрын
I haven't personally. I would imagine you might struggle with creating a little more lift with double mulch blades instead of a high lift tacked on, imo.
@dustinbalkema3 жыл бұрын
@@BriansLawnMaintenance my experience is the opposite. High lift blades can create way to much vacuum, depending on the soil of the lawn I service, but doubling on mulching blades gives me the volume breakdown without excessive lift and massive dust cloud. Thanks for the videos. Michigan proud!

I cut truck mud flaps into 5" strips and screwed them to the front and side of my deck. I let them hang down about 1 1/4". I used 1/4 self tapping screws to attach them. I used heavy rubber window flashing tape to seal the top. IT LOOKS LIKE FIDO'S ASS, BUT IT WORKS PERFECT. Almost completely eliminated leaf blowout. Gator blades on my Huster 52" with mulching chute cover. I don't even pick up sticks until I finish. Why not mulching them too!!!💪🏻

Lower throttle to idol prior to shut off. Saves on engine. Just some positive recommendation 👍🏽

Yeah...I have a 36” SWZT Scag walk-behind and I get that blow-out with the accelerator bag. I actually hate the bag. In Oregon, it’s usually wet grass/leaves/etc. so it gets hella heavy. I wish there was a cloth bag that held more (like a Honda style bag). It would be lighter, but you’d just have to be careful of running into things. The x-blade set-up has been a blessing but with it raising the deck 1/4 inch, it makes more blow-out.

Brian love the channel. I bought a grandstand after watching your videos. Hoping you can comment with your experience. My grandstand multiforce was built in may 2021. I just purchased an xblade set up from Ballard and several other items because of your videos. A little bit concerned about the hex spacer that goes through the blades. It is a perfect fit on the lower blade but the upper blade rides on the hex portion. Does that create any issues? Also do I need a longer bolt to make up for the thread loss? Ballard wasn’t very clear online for the grandstand specifically or with the instructions they provided. Thanks

As per the system on the front of the trailer behind the trailer coupler, I saw it in a stock truck bed here yesterday and it looked like it had an easier just getting them in the trailer.

will you ever be checking out the wright grass gobbler?
Yes, it's metal and way to heavy! I have both. I don't use the grass gobbler anymore. Aluminum catcher is better
@jeremiahjorenby22754 жыл бұрын
@@gmoorehead70 Someone needs to make the grass gobbler+leaf gobbler combo out of titanium plate, that would be a seriously potent weapon for cleanups

Hi Brian! Irreverent question. I own a lawn business mostly private residential, few property management companies. How do I bid on commercial business? Thank you in advanced!!
@BriansLawnMaintenance4 жыл бұрын
Target commercial clients! Google My Business Listing, door to door sales, make office visits, it's a ground game.

Hey great channel love your passion for this job! I wonder if the 'blow out' issue is an inherent problem with most side discharge mowers? This is the 3rd video i have watched that had this issue. Here in the UK I use a rear discharge ride on Toro with a big basket on the back, When I do leaves I do not get any 'blow out' and the basket can hold so much more, would it be ultimately worth having a different mower for your leaf clean up jobs? Because surely the blow out causes you to have to do extra passes?
