Greg certainly knows what he's talking about, and it would be lovely to see today's young riders not throw themselves at the jump, way ahead of the motion. Nice video.

+Savannah S I think we all start out that way to some extent. We're unsure, and we'd rather be too far forward than be 'left behind' and risk popping the horse in the mouth or the back. So, in my opinion, at least you're erring in the right direction. It can be very helpful to do a series of bounce jumps, graduating in size. Find your jumping position as you approach the first crossrail, offer just enough of a crest release that your horse has freedom of movement, GRAB MANE (highly underestimated in the learning process!) and stay in position, letting the horse jump up into you. You are staying off his back and by grabbing mane, you stay off his mouth, and all that really needs to change is your elbow angle. You can even practice this on the ground. Two-point, weight in the heels, hands steady (on the imaginary neck), and let the elbows do the give and take. Does that make sense? And btw, good for you! for acknowledging your habit and being willing to ask for help. SO many riders do the very same thing and see nothing wrong with it - lol!

So as a classical dressage rider, the "Pivot point" is The vastus medialus. To have your leg be fully in contact with the horse, squeezing won't do it. Engaging your Sartoruis M muscle to turn your leg slightly inward will bring your leg in contact with the saddle, horse, and turn your toes in so you don't "Cross your skis" or poke the horse with a spur accidentally. Pivot point with no pinching! At least as far as I remember. I don't really remember muscle groups well. I'm working on teaching my old mare to jump and teaching me in the process. This video is super informative.

This part I don't understand. What is the horse getting out of your partnership with him? Your extra weight on his back? You telling him what you want him to do instead of him doing what he wants? Maybe security if there are no other horses around and just you. You are the boss of the horse when you are riding. This was a great video It is all about biomechanics. Really glad yall have this on youtube!

i agree with the whole hands thing. a little more clearer would mean, that wehn your hands are higher the horse has space to move its body upward without pressure, which allows it to jump more agressivly. thats what my instructor says. and it has worked for me so i sugest others try it :)

Very well said. I am a strong believer of Rick Gore's saying "A horse is only right." I find that if I listen to my horse as an inctructer, he will tell me what i need to do to get what i want out of him. If you ride the way your horse wants you too, you can't go wrong. The only way and can ride wrong, is if you are using pain and intimidation, that takes away the whole point of working as partners. A partnership is 2 beings that work off each other for the better, not one bossing the other.

@chexmygold gem twist is a very strong horse and you try going around a course of that high of fences still while maintaining your horse im pretty sure he doesn't care what he looks like at that point, he is just trying to get a clean safe round and trying to win, im sure when he is not competing at that high of a level his equitation over the fences are much better..

The only problem with my jumping, is every video of people jumping I watch, they always sit in their seat as soon as the horses front legs are over the jump. But my trainer tells us not to sit until all four legs are on the ground. And I am extremely confused..
@HyleeTraining
@HyleeTraining 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Keila, I have a number of students who have struggled with this and what you are seeing is them landing but being very close to the saddle but not actually sitting. Your trainer is right however the proper landing position (when the front legs hits the ground) puts us riders in a position where we are very close to the saddle.

My horses also come to the gait to meet me and follow me around. It is because I taught them to follow me. And even then sometimes they will want to go off and do their own thing... How do you keep them from leaving, by being the boss and making them do something theyd rather not do... Just because something has a tendency to do something or even if it wants to does not mean its good. Want and desire can be manipulated to serve another purpose. Seducing something.

I think, he is trying to help both extremes. You know? Like some people jump way out of the saddle, and others sit back. Maybe he is trying to fix both issues with one two minute video. Which is nearly impossible because they are two completely different things, I dont know. Maybe if you are teaching yourself and dont have a trainer to help you... keeping constant position will kinda naturally throw you into the correct position? or at least keep you from jumping forward and getting left behind.

They can make a world of difference in your life or career. :)

unless i've taken this the wrong way, at the beginning, i'm sure he's trying to say to... not doing the jumping position? This doesn't make any sense to me... like i can understand when you get these riders doing these weeeny little cross poles and they over jump it, when all they should be doing is just raising themselves slightly, but surely, when jumping at a height, with the horses forward going motion you'd need to lean more forward so you make it comfy and easy for them to get up and over?

You said "A partnership is 2 beings that work off each other for the better, not one bossing the other." Now you say that you are a leader. Don't leaders boss their subordinates around? You are in a leader-follower partnership with your horse. I said nothing about forcing horses to do things for you... However. You are going to have to get them to do things that they would not regularly do if you were not around... We have to teach a horse first and after enough time it becomes a habbit.

He is gettign direction and leadership, I can call my horse from a pasture of 25other horses, 5acer pasture of grass with hay in it and he will come to the gait. And it's not because i grain him. Both my horses come to the gait. I am the leader on the ground and thus it doesn't take a pain bit to be the leader in the saddle.

The horse has a range of vision of 350° not 360! The horse has 2 "blind spots," (where it can't see.) 1 is in front of the face - the other is behind its head, extending over its' back/behind the tail. Therefore, it is unlikely your horse can 'see' your hands raise. 'Aggression' is also the totally incorrect label for the behaviour being described. In this situation, it is not agrression that is being displayed but the FLIGHT RESPONSE! He may ride well, but knows nothing about equine behaviour!
