Well explained. I’m in post for a road trip comedy I’m directing. We encountered pretty much every potential problem you described. We did an ultra poor man’s method. One tubular nan-light was mounted above the windshield for all the car shots. After realizing it would take at least half an hour to change the cameras mounted position for each angle, I opted to only shoot the master wide shots with the car rig, then we shot the rest of the interior medium shots on a tripod with a wide lens in the center consul. It caused about as many problems as you would expect. Just yesterday we finished recording ADR for every single driving scene. Our light needed a cord to power it, which meant in the drivers shot you could see the power cord running along the side of the window. You could also see the light in the master wide. I’m still working on VFX to take all those out. Not to mention all the on-set problems you already described that eat up the production schedule, causing much stress. No wonder people use green screen for this stuff. I didn’t consider that an option after watching some really bad car green screen on a low budget film that was still a higher budget than ours. Not worth the risk. All that being said, movies that have a lot of moving car shots are possible on a micro budget, but are extremely difficult.

I still don't think they've nailed down car scenes realistically if done virtually in a studio vs. the real thing, there is nothing like real world lighting and motion that can be a one to one match, it always looks artificial and fake looking if done in a studio vs. the real thing, even with current day technological advancements made in Filmmaking.

Exactly. It doesn’t really matter that Other Guys used green screen, since it’s meant as a deeply satirical take on action movies, but the green screen effect is really noticeable. The best usage of it shown here was for Death Proof and Pulp Fiction, where Tarantino took advantage of its artificial nature to intentionally make it more surreal looking.

@@mg6945 Yes definitely, it really depends on how the filmmakers implement the driving sequence and not overuse the virtual production so it doesn't look artificial, but I feel if it can be filmed for real the better to sell the driving sequence to be more authentic.

And then there is the most realistic method used in "Ronin".
@mrebear97589 ай бұрын
Most of Ronin looks like it was shot on a process trailer too. Bullit and some Tom Cruise movies, it's clear the actors were doing most of the driving themselves.
