Hey whatsup guys OSG back and as I am on doing Amiga software houses I’m going to sneak this one in first on the C64 as its one of if not the best known out of the lot of them. Ocean had a load of games in fact a whopping 107 titles some great but some really bad…like highlander…luckily enough we won’t have to endure that game in this video as I’ve whittled it down to the top 20 Ocean games on the C64…obviously this is my own opinion and maybe there will be some missing as there were so many games to pick from. I also have to add that Ocean were the kings when it came to Movie based games and some of these are the most memorable games of my whole childhood
Games in this video:-
Rambo: First Blood Part II @ 00:49
Robocop @ 01:23
Batman: The Caped Crusader @ 01:49
The Untouchables @ 02:21
The Great Escape @ 02:48
Batman - The Movie @ 03:20
Smash T.V. @ 03:55
Puzznic @ 04:29
Parallax @ 05:08
Cabal @ 05:33
The Newzealand Story @ 06:07
Platoon @ 06:42
Hudson Hawk @ 07:17
Battle Command @ 07:49
Navy Seals @ 08:22
Frankie goes to Hollywood @ 08:54
Rainbow Islands @ 09:26
Head Over Heels @ 10:01
Midnight Resistance @ 10:36
Wizball @ 11:12

I can't argue with the top spot at all, Wizball is a true classic that I loved as a kid, and still love to to this day!! I spent many hours, probably thousands of hours when all added up playing this with my older brother way back in the day, me playing as Cat and him playing as Wiz. Everything about it just blew me away, the mesmerizing music, the awesome sound effects, and the gradual beautiful colours that are eventually revealed on the different levels as you progress through it. To this day it still has the best guitar like solo when it's game over, and the music in the bonus levels is astounding. I would say this is probably the best two player game ever on the C64, probably followed closely by Beach Head 2 for me...a truly wonderful game that holds a lot of happy memories for me!! Some of the other games here are ace too, I remember playing Midnight Resistance on my brothers ST back in the day, and also on the Amiga, but I have never played the 64 version much at all so i'm gonna give it a go. I too used to also play Frankie a heck of a lot, and never really quite knew what was going on either, but that never used to stop me trying, and the music is breathtaking in parts, especially the part where you collect the falling flowers, that is an absolutely beautiful piece of music!! The Great Escape also used to intrigue me too, and that's another title I never really fully understood, but as I have it on the Magnificent Seven compilation, I often used to fire it up to give it a go, but I used to also find it rather boring too, the slow place just didn't quite cut it for me, but it does look good i'll give it that :-D Anyway, another great video, keep it up man!! :)

theres something special about your first big box and this one was extra special as we all loved the film (even though we shouldnt have been watching it) i was 11 i think when i got it and i too spent the whole bus ride home looking at the screens.... i was disappointed too but the ocean loader 4 was great and the game itself once you got over the fact that it wasnt the arcade was pretty decent too

Great list! didn't realise Ocean released so many classics. I remember most of em, few was a bit late for me before I upgraded. I remember being disapointed when I saw The Great Escape's bland graphics but after playing for a while I discovered it was a great little game. Frankie was great too, the music in the flower room was awesome, also Platoon and Head Over Heels were top. Can't argue with Wizball at No1, spent many a hour on that one, total stand out C64 title.

Yes, I agree of course. In theory. If I have too many choises I don’t know where to begin and I stick with a few I like and play those a lot. I played Shamus a lot, Montezuma’s Revenge, Boulder Dash, Galaga and a lot of the text adventures like The Hobitt and Gruds in Space. A few others I don’t recall the name of. I’m a bit tempted to get that new full size console emulator but I don’t think I have room for more stuff.

Rambo First Blood part 2 was the first game I ever played on the c64. Summer 1990, a friends house. He had the same Hollywood Pack as you, so I got to see the rest of those games- including of course, Platoon. That, is still one of the best c64 games, be it from Ocean or any company. The sadistic level of difficulty alas, is criminal! Its amazing to imagine us at that age with the patience and perseverance to return to that. Level One- on me old black and white portable telly. It was near impossible to see the trip wires in the paths ahead. I remember how amazing it was, reaching the village- and onto the Tunnel level. Easily some of my favourite in game music ever in that outstanding level. I got my own c64 that Christmas. It was the Night Moves pack- containing Midnight Resistance, Shadow Warriors, Night Breed and Sly Spy. A stunning pack of games! Midnight Resistance blew me away. I clearly remember a school friend telling me its cheat. If you typed in "siamese" on the screen as you insert yer initials after the game, you were granted infinite lives! Thats how I finished it. Lets remember too- the classic "Ocean Loader" tunes. All time classic tunes, forever ingrained into the memory always here now online to remember and relive. I never played Navy Seals- looks good!

Cool list, great vid as usual. I will say though, in regards to your comment about Smash TV, I think it's actually best that it doesn't include the 2-player option. You wouldn't be able to use the two-joystick control method in that case - and decoupled aiming and movement are THE defining quality of Smash TV and Robotron. Like you said, the C64 managed to capture the arcade's gameplay, and that's in large part to this control method remaining intact. When you can only fire in the direction you're moving, Smash TV ports become little more than Berzerk or Commando-like in the gameplay area, it's simply not the same game.

Platoon on the C64 was a great game indeed. I found a glitch near the beginning of the game that allowed you to rack up so many points it maxed out the score in under an hour, if I remember correctly. It happened by timing a jump over one of the pits, possibly involving an enemy. Unfortunately it's been over 30 years and I don't have any other details. Maybe you can find if you haven't already. EDIT I just watched your play through video and realized it must have been one of the trip wires. I only remember having to jump over something and the bridge was nearby.

I grew up with Hunchback. I love Ocean’s C64 version, which I found to be much better than the arcade version, even though the arcade game had some extra “endgame” screens.

The problem with the arcade version was that it was ridiculously hard. The C64 version is a better overall game due to it being slightly more forgiving

I loved Batman: The Caped Crusader I was really impressed with the comic book style presentation with having your previous few areas explored still in the background. I think Ocean got a bad reputation in later years at times for no reason because overall their selection of software was some of the best on the system and they also kept going late into the lifespan of the system. It's kind of a shame that most British publishers from that era are all gone with the exception of Codmasters. Okay technically they still exist as part of Namco Bandai but only for distribution purposes and now any kind of software development.

@@oldstylegaming I did honestly forget about them but then in all honesty their output these days is minimal at best. I'll be honest I am surprised they make enough money from the games they have released this past decade to actually still be going. So I would actually disagree they are still awesome because you have to make new games for that to happen, but that is just what I think.

I never cared much for Ocean Software licensed games and hardly agree with the praise they are getting by a few European youtubers. But their Graftgold developed conversion of Rainbow Island is my favourite C64 game ever. In my humble opinion, as far as playability is concerned it is the best version of the game, it even beats the original.
