Mr. Jordan, this is one of my favorite videos you released. I am a 58-year-old, VERY average Joe practitioner, train twice a week on average, total hobbyist, in year 14 with BJJ. You shared principles that, for me, are easier to remember. Learning the mechanics is important but sometimes, the number of details can be overwhelming in a series of technics. But there are numerous times I have no idea what my partner is doing to me but to remember "Keep elbows tight" or "Keep my butt low" or "Keep their feet off of you" is easier to remember for us old guys. Thank you for all the great content!

Purple belt here. This was great. I caught myself reaching up from bottom the other day. What was I thinking?! I appreciate videos like this from black belts, because they see these things as basic things that every BJJ fighter should know not to do. They're obvious, or so they seem. I'm always questioning "am I making these common beginner mistakes?" Great breakdown, and there are a few in here that I should really focus on. I'll be referring back to this video. Also, LMNT is life. I use it daily, for preparing and recovering from a hot day working outside on the homestead, and the same for BJJ classes.

Every time I'd figure one of these out (often through Priit Mikhelson/Chris Paines videos), my jiu-jitsu experienced a quantum leap forward. Even at advanced blue belt I still have a few to internalise (lost gold in a tournament recently by not finishing the sweep/sweeping myself), but for beginners, this is pure gold. Unfortunately, whenever one of them asks me for help and I point out that they are making one of these conceptual mistakes, they go away unhappy that I didn't give them a specific technique/details.

As a white belt I would definitely appreciate what you're doing!! When I first began I was definitely looking more for techniques/submissions but now with a bit more experience I'm realizing it's much more valuable to know how to escape and just survive and not get submitted, at least for the level I'm currently at.

Good stuff. At a higher level, I find focusing on only a few techniques to be a lot more effective than trying to learn everything I can. Build a ground game from various positions and drill those techniques constantly. So many new guys I talk to want to go straight to learning cool inversions and submissions, but I think many miss the point that you don't want to have to *think* about doing these moves, they need to come naturally in the situation. This is where I find the repetitive drilling/live drilling ups the game immensely. In my year of rolling, I see my core techniques gradually getting better and better and once I'm happy with them I'll move onto others.

Great breakdown of these mistakes, many of which I make. You make a good point about how sometimes a breakdown in discipline leads to these mistakes, especially when fatigue sets in. I was confused about not letting your grips past the center line. For example, trying to pass from the top half guard, leaning across your partner, and reaching for an underhook - is that overextending and would be a mistake? Thank you!
@JordanTeachesJiujitsu
@JordanTeachesJiujitsu Жыл бұрын
That would not be an example of crossing the centre line because it's the near side of the belly button you don't want to cross into. You want your near side grip to control their far side. Hope that makes sense 🙂

This is fantastic. as a white belt wrestler, simple rules of thumb are so helpful to make progress. Also interesting how many of these rules of thumb cross over from wrestling 1. Giving up underhooks 2. Reaching up 3. Loose turtle 4. Loose elbow 5. Not adjusting base 6. Not finishing sweeps 6. Fighting hands 7. Riding too high literally all of these are direct rules of wrestling too.

So with getting underhooks, is this with the idea to wrestle up from that position? I hear people talk about the importance of underhooks but am not sure what to do when I get them 🤔
@JordanTeachesJiujitsu
@JordanTeachesJiujitsu Жыл бұрын
Underhooks from the bottom are useful for 2 things: 1. The ability to take an angle. Meaning coming around the the back. Provided they don't Overhook. 2. Connecting yourself to someone. This could be useful for dog fight which is a form of wrestling up, butterfly guard, and more. From the top it's mostly used for pinning and isolating limbs 🙂

Hey Jordan, I remember a while back I think you had an ad or you recommended an ear bud that stays in ears really well. I could be wrong but do you remember what those were?

"Butt in the air" I agree it is generally a mistake. wim deputter talk about this- you either want to be more upright with shoulder and head above hips, or in like a down dog/tripod position with head all the way down and butt very high. both of these end positions tend to be very stable. it is the in-between positions where things get very iffy and tend to get vulnerable to getting swept or submitted.

I agree 100%. You only want your butt in the air if you have base with your arms already.
