Alright, I have real Ao Dai history here. In the Ly dynasty, around 1009, people popularized Ao Giao Linh (a shirt worn from a cloth rolled into the body and folded in the Y shape in front of the chest). During the reign of Tran Dynasty in 1225, it was popular as Ao Vien Linh (also a cloth that was rolled into the body but folded O shape on neck). It was followed by the Lê dynasty in 1428, when the "Ao Giao Linh" in the video was born aka Ao Truc Linh ‘real name’ (a shirt with four ties sewn together, wearing the same overalls as a bra, the two over head ties were tied together by the belt) it was only used for heavy work, not used as casual wear and the only reason it was popular during the French colonial period was because the colonial period gave birth to more jobs, people had to do more work. In the Le Dynasty, the popular costumes were still Ao Giao Linh and Ao Vien Linh. Then came to the Nguyen Dynasty in 1802, this was the beginning of Ao Dai, they appended Ao Truc Linh shirt with another piece in front and called it Ao Ngu Than, and old Ao Truc Linh was called Ao Tu Than. In 1886, France completely controlled Vietnam, about 30 years later, Ao Dai was launched, trimmed Ao Ngu Than to two ties connected and sewn tight with the body like Western style. As you can see, the Ao Dai has nothing to do with China's Cheongsam

I just bought myself an Ao Dai in california two weeks ago! I am 23 now and for years, as a child, i was so embarrassed to be wearing Ao Dai-but now I resurge with such pride in my culture that I love to wear my Ao Dai everywhere! The title is pretty misleading because basically áo dài have only come to existence as early as 20th centuries which is less than 200 years and back then us Vietnamese worn many different kinds of clothes that are so called vietphuc just like hanfu of chinese, you can’t tell that the origin of cheongsam dated back to 2000 years ago

Ao Dai is a very modern costume which was invented in the 1930’s due to the simplifying of “áo ngũ thân” or “áo tấc” of the 1800’s. Before that time, Vietnamese costumes were called “Việt Phục” including “áo giao lĩnh”, “áo ngũ thân”, “áo tứ thân”...

Not to negate your efforts since the presentation style is top notch, but the information discussed here is incomplete at best and misleading at worst. 1. Ao Dai is a relatively recent construction, it has never been the sole dress of our people. In fact, if I’m not mistaken, it has the shortest life so far compared to other traditional clothing - as discussed in the comment section by very passionate, highly knowledgeable posters. Refusing this fact is like saying Heian courtesans dressed like geishas, Tang women wore qipao, Ming soldiers had Qing queue or Henry V donned suit and tie at Agincourt. 2. This video seems to present Vietnamese culture as filtered by foreigners/westerners' lens-imagining how our country is supposed to be, as opposed to how it actually is. I do not want to say Orientalism. There also seems to exist a certain bias which i cannot pinpoint. However, objective information about Viet Nam's authentic culture is scarce, this is understood. That being said, misleading information about anything is the biggest pet peeve of mine. 3.Not affiliated but I suggest interested people to check out Đại Việt Cổ Phong group and the VietNam Centre channel here on youtube. Those people are passionate, supremely knowledgeable and are working tirelessly to promote our true culture. They deserve more recognition.

@Chí Thiện Nguyễn when you quote you must quote well and not half sentences. You write: ' they did say"first sign of Áo Dài on antique bronze drums from Đồng Sơn culture" But anyone who watches the video can find that you are completely misrepresenting what was said. The sentence probably starts with the statement "that some expers ..(0;30)" Or in other words: "they don't claim this", you pretend they claim this and that's really 'totally wrong'. It would have been different when they had said that some expers 'had proven' . To make your comment even more riducule is the fact that they go on with telleng that 'other experts" ..and then comes the story of the Trung sisters. So to show the pictures of the Trung sisters is indeed relatated because it shows that there are several expers that have several ideas.. And to mention the Trung sisters is for another reason related to the Áo Dài and more relevant to why the Vietnamese woman are proud to wear them (well some). To understand this one should study a bit about the Vietnamese history related to the woman.

It leads people to the first impress and assumption that Ao Dai has a history of 2000 years which is actually only 200 years. You may have been right when you say my opinion is based on what I have seen not on the information provided in the video. However, Vietcetera is a platform that is trustworthy by lots of people where many smart "brains" work for, why they don't they understand that the first impression is very important and why they can give a controversial, misleading tittle like that if not because they intented to do (to make argument, increase interaction or else?!). (even the two girls at the end of the video say "we've summed up the thousand history of Ao Dai"??!! For some people like me, when the very first thing is so wrong the rest is non sense. Actually before the 19th century, the ao giao linh was worn by the commoners and royal family. The ao dai became popular and was brought into the Nguyen dynasty because the Nguyen dynasty despised the ao giao linh

Ao Dai was NOT Vietnamese traditional clothes 2000 YEARS AGO. It's only invented in 20th century. Historical Vietnamese clothes were very different in style and had different names depend on dynasty.

Great to know the history. After 1975 was the ao dai ever banned? I did not know if people were allowed to wear them after unifacation. Also can you tell me about ao baba? Can a man wear a white tunic top with black pants ? I I don't know what the color combination is for man or woman. I have clothes from India and the tops for men also have slits on the side like al baba. These tops come past my waist. Alot of times I wear white pants, but sometimes black pants with white top. Many Chinese ppl do know that Vietnam has similar culture with China for some historical reasons but a lof of us got kinda upset when we first came to know how SIMILAR the two cultures actually are. And to clarify, in the late Qing dynasty, most Manchus wore Qipao with underpants because the north is always cold. Later on the Shanghainese developed Qipao into the form that we see representing China today (no pants). So I think communications of culture between China, Vietnam and Korea are definitely necessary. The countries should talk and figure out what we can do to make peace and promote our cultures without conflicts.

Vietnamese ancient culture and costumes have many similarities with China because Vietnam was dominated by China for over thousand years. However, things changed gradually after we escaped Chinese domination. And I have to say that the current Ao dai is an innovative product inspired by Western clothing after Vietnam was colonized by French colonialism and we didn't steal the idea from Qipao as many Chinese think. But 2 years ago, in a collection of Ne Tiger brand at China Fashion Week, they launched clothes that were exactly the same as Ao dai and called it innovative Qipao, and they also used "The conical hat", which is a traditional symbol of Vietnam. I wonder when did your Qipao have pants inside and Qipao's split is high above the waist? This blatant act of stealing Ao dai along with the wrong judgments of many Chinese about our traditional costume has caused a lot of controversies and frustration in Viet Nam.

In the Ly dynasty, around 1009, people popularized Ao Giao Linh (a shirt worn from a cloth rolled into the body and folded in the Y shape in front of the chest). During the reign of Tran Dynasty in 1225, it was popular as Ao Vien Linh (also a cloth that was rolled into his body but folded O shape on neck). It was followed by the Lê dynasty in 1428, when the "Ao Giao Linh" in the video was born aka Ao Truc Linh ‘real name’ (a shirt with four ties sewn together, wearing the same overalls as a bra, the two over head ties were tied together by the belt). Then came to the Nguyen Dynasty in 1802, this was the beginning of Ao Dai, they appended Ao Truc Linh shirt with another piece in front and called it Ao Ngu Than, and old Ao Truc Linh was called Ao Tu Than. In 1886, France completely controlled Vietnam, about 30 years later, Ao Dai was launched, trimmed Ao Ngu Than to two ties connected and sewn tight with the body like Western style. As you can see, the Ao Dai has nothing to do with China's Cheongsam

Good video! But was dissappointing though. Because it would be best if the narrator could pronounce the names of áo dài accurately. It's áo ngũ thân not áo ngữ thân, as the narrator sometimes said. The so wrong thing here is the tittle of the video which is misleading. It leads people to the first impress and assumption that Ao Dai has a history of 2000 years which is actually only 200 years. You may have been right when you say my opinion is based on what I have seen not on the information provided in the video. However, Vietcetera is a platform that is trustworthy by lots of people where many smart "brains" work for, why they don't understand that the first impression is very important and why they can give a controversial, misleading tittle like that if not because they intented to do (to make argument, increase interaction or else?!). (even the two girls at the end of the video say "we've summed up the thousand history of Ao Dai"??!! For some people like me, when the very first thing is so wrong the rest is non sense. Great video but whaaaaa?!?! 2000 years of ao dai?!? Sorry that's trying too hard. The design of ao dai was only created during the 1920s and 30s & I'd argue that the modern silhouette was only created & popularised in the 50s. Ao dai is MODERNIZED Vietnamese clothing. To say the Trung Sisters wore it, or it was there before Chinese fashion influence is simply RIDICULOUS. Are we talking about specific TAILORING & SILHOUETTES or just a piece of cloth?!? ( Plus, Vietnamese sources say the Trung Sisters rode to war BARE-CHESTED with their tits flying in the wind, freaking out the Chinese soldiers). Just look at the Chinese cheongsam/ qipao. The tailoring is almost IDENTICAL to ao dai, except the Vietnamese wore flowy trousers underneath & the cheongsam/ qipao was worn just like a dress. If Viets want to be nationalistic but not face FACTS, & claim illogically that ao dai has ZERO Chinese influence, don't worry, because even qipao & cheongsam are not HAN CHINESE in origin --- it's based on MANCHURIAN robes (those high collars are pretty evident... they're of Manchu origin & not Han Chinese y-shaped giao linh garment, hon). So yeah, ao dai is clearly influenced by Qing (the last dynasty of China BUT the rulers were of Manchu origin) fashion, & they evolved into qipao/ cheongsam in China, basically modern urban styles created in Shanghai in the 20s, and ao dai in the south, ALSO in the 20s. Claiming they stretch back in time to random pieces of cloth is sheer insult to fashion, fashion history & the fabulous Vietnamese designers who crafted & popularised beautiful ao dai from the 1920s up to the 1970s. Also, ao dai just mean "long upper garment." Guess what "cheongsam" 長衫 means in Cantonese/ Chinese? It also literally means "long upper garment." Any robe or long coat could've been called AO DAI in Vietnam & CHEUNGSAAM in Canton, ZANSE in Shanghai. SAME meaning.
