They gave 5 - *FIVE* - to CR7 because they wanted to create an artificial competition/comparison between him and Messi which doesn't exist and never existed, which would make more people tune in to football, which would mean more money for them. Like you said, a lot of the players mentioned should be in the top 30 while others shouldn't. For example, Benzema over Coutinho and Lloris over Oblak/Schmeichel? Recency bias experienced by some people is astounding. Umtiti was incredible all season, constantly in talks of being the best In the world or at least top 5. He was BY FAR barcas best defender and helped them to a season with only 3 defeats. Since France Football only care about the UCL and the World Cup unfortunately none of this matters… But he was also incredible in the World Cup being one of the best defenders in the competition and also winning it. He deserves it much more than any of the players on the list, but if he has to replace a defender it would be Diego Godin. Tbh, I think even after so many years Ronaldo and Messi still deserve the next one. I mean they're not as good as before, but still better than anyone else (imo). And even though I think they would deserve it, I just can't stand the idea that if one of them wins, either Ronaldo or Messi fanboys won't shut up about it for years how *their* gloryboy has won most of those things. So while for fairness I think they deserve it, I wouldn't have anything against someone else winning it this time, just to keep that 5-5 tie. It's a nice ending too to that rivalry, you know?

On Benzema the reason his stats are so low is simply because of Ronaldo plain and simple. Benzema was so selfless and helped the team for so long. His recognition here shows that being a pure goal scorer as a striker is not a requirement. His prime years where sapped by ronaldo and now bale. Club football has better coaches, better dynamic and chemistry within teams and the players are more fit to play. Also the world cup is of much shorter length than a club season. Summarizing the matches, it was defensive minded and flat.

I just don't agree with comparing raw stats for keepers. Who cares about who made more saves or the save percentage. What matters is how difficult were those saves. Lloris didn't had to do much, but made some immense saves when France needed him. And thanks for the Jonas shoutout! He's the best.

I think they really underestimate the Bundesliga. One thing I hear often for example is that pass percentage rates are lower in the Bundesliga then in other leagues, but if you actually watch it, they’re not passing around the back or sideways, they’re sprinting and going forward due to it being such a fast and offensive style of play in the Bundesliga

Very good points brought up. Kroos is criminally overlooked. If you look at his performances for Real Madrid, he's actually been more important than Modric who's a bookmaker's lock for the Ballon d'Or. If we're going to be realistic about this, Messi was a good bit ahead of Ronaldo throughout the season and those two are still streaks ahead of anyone else. Just look at WhoScored's average ratings as a guideline.

I'm glad someone called it out. The WC is way overrated. Players like Salah or Lewandowski have no chance to win or progress further than the group stage. Plus it's only 7 games, and that's if you play all of the games. It's not a level playing field, unlike the over 50 games that some top teams play during the year, on much more difficult stages (playing against teams that are trained to play well and in the CL against the best teams with the best players). The WC is overrated in this aspect. It's a fun competition, but should only be seen as a bonus in case of a tie when it comes to comparing players' performance throughout the year. To be fair about Jonas though: He's a good player, and he scored a lot in a competitive league, but it's not quite as competitive as some other leagues. Plus that CL was abysmal, Benfica scored one goal only (and it wasn't even Jonas). So maybe this year is the wrong one to ask for justice for Jonas, lol. Coutinho should have made that list instead. But I get your point, you were comparing striker vs striker and how it just doesn't add up if you compare pure statistics or gameplay. Some of the nominees are nonsense.
