We don't really guess, good goalkeepers take the adversaries positioning into account, the way his feet are setup, which one is his dominant foot etc, ofc at the end it is extremely hard but it's far more than just "I feel like going this way today"

Yes. It's a skill and can be taught, improved, lost...etc. For instance Simon Mignolet is a terrible keeper but quite good in defending penalties. Not to mention other all round better keepers. And the fact that as time goes by and a keeper improves many of them improve at defending the kick which would be impossible if they just "randomly guess" as the video thinks it is. But I won't expect much more from this video really.

This is what happens when Americans try to make a video about football. An obvious foul on the attacker in the penalty area is also unfair for the attacking team! What if he would have scored a 100% goal? Football is a team sport...so everybody in the team has to live with the consequences including the goalkeeper of course. And if you would actually watch real football, you would see that good goalkeepers like Buffon, Neuer, Subasic and so on are very capable of saving a few penalty's because of their experience and reflexes.

“Unfair to the keeper” Just a reminder, the pen is given when a foul happens inside the box, meaning that (most of the times) the defender couldn’t have done anything to prevent a goal from happening so he had no other choice but to give a pen away. So in conclusion, before the pen was given (again, most of the times) the attacker was in a dangerous position that could’ve ended up in a goal. But obviously the ref can’t just let it slide and makes it 1-0, he gives him a pen.

"Penalty Kicks are unfair to the goalie" - They're supposed to be a *penalty* against the defending team for an infringement in the penalty area. Football is a team sport, it's not striker vs goalie. The striker is given a greater chance to score as a way to punish the defending team. The entire video is based on the assumption "goalies pretty much have to guess" - wrong. Whilst it's true that most goalies guess a direction, better-trained goalkeepers are taught techniques to predict where the striker will shoot based on the striker's posture and feet alignment. Keepers like Buffon, Hart, Caballero among others constantly use techniques which help them dive in the correct direction more often than not.

A penalty is awarded as punishment for when a player commits an offense inside his own box, a penalty is meant to give a team the best possible chance to score a goal because the opponent has denied an opportunity. Penalty kicks aren't meant to be fair to the goalkeeper even though they usually have nothing to do with the awarding of the penalty.

When a penalty is called the goalie can't do anything wrong, if he saves the penalty he is the hero but when someone scores there is no blame at the goalie's side for not saving. A penalty will never be in favor of the goalie, but that's why players don't make fouls in the box...

Can I say something? Penalty kicks are not supposed to be fair, they are given because a player committed a foul inside the penalty box, an area close to the goal itself. So if a foul was committed, it might be stopping a potential goal, however this is not always the case. The penalty kick isn't supposed to be fair, but it is supposed to give the goalkeeper a chance to save it, and this is what it does.

As a goalkeeper, I can relate. It is not a 50% chance of a keeper saving the ball. I don't think penaltys are unfair since someone doing a foul is the reason of a penalty. But what we rely on as keepers is the direction of what the foot is aiming at. That makes it much easier and also may I mention this. People that are right footed tend to kick the ball to their right and left footed people kick it to the right more often since it is more natural for your foot to follow in that dierection while kicking the ball

I'm a goalie and take it from me that we aren't completely relying on luck. We are taught to read the kick taker's body language and just as he brings his foot down, we have all the gain-able information which in turn allows us to be able to stop the shot. P.S. if you think that it is unfair, it is because it [penalty kick] is supposed to be a punishment for the team that is defending as they intrupted a possible goal illegaly.
