@@coldcrashpictures I was just coming into the comments to say that. I was wondering if the line about not changing lives or creating community was ironic. Being a creator changes lives. You help me look at films from a new angle, in a way that is fresh from other online media reviewers. You honestly changed my look at Birds of Prey from thinking, "Its a good time" to "Yeah, this is subtle genius." Here's hoping this year is only a garbage can fire.

Also ducked into the comments to bolster this message. This channel introduces a few new concepts to me, but that's not why I show up. I don't have an echo chamber, I talk about the unnecessary nature of most of the gross unjustice going around and I get crickets, or warnings against communism. I come to this channel because I'm too damned exhausted to explain to people that I'm not a communist or a socialist and that nothing I want undermines the democratic republic I live in... and that yes, my job in the Game Industry absolutely impacts and has a responsibility to culture and political policy. I come here to not feel crazy and isolated. So thanks for continuing to put content out.

I’ve always watched It’s a Wonderful Life, or at least parts of it, every single Christmas I can remember. But I didn’t really understand it until 2020. My dad and I celebrated Christmas alone. No aunts, uncles, or cousins. Even in years when it’s been small, we’ve always had my brother and my grandma around. But my grandma died in October, and my brother was serving the last few days of his jail sentence. It was surreal, everything we tried to do just reminded us of everything we were missing. We wrapped up the evening watching It’s a Wonderful Life, and it was the first time in a while that either of us watched the whole thing. I can’t articulate it but there was a special kind of comfort there. Things are shitty. 2020 has, objectively, been the worst year ever for both of us-and that tops the year I dropped out of college twice and lost my uncle. But it’s too early to give up. It’s a Wonderful Life, if nothing else, is about hope. I’m not a hometown hero and I’m still stumbling my way through college but I’m still hopeful for tomorrow.

You have a keen analytical mind and the soul of a storyteller. You've made me re-evaluate several films and given me the opportunity to share your experience of the past year, all the while raising the bar on how compelling and moving a KZbin video can be. In terms of realising your dreams and judging your achievements, take heart from how far you've come experimenting with this short video form (okay, not so short these days) from 'top ten annoying tropes' to what you can do now... and how much it means to the people who watch... and how palpably excited we are to see what will come next. And you're not just helping us think more substantively about the art we watch, you're changing the way we think about the world and our place in it. For example, watching this I became acutely aware that I may belong to the last generation that will live in anything approaching comfort. That's not right. The past year has made it all too apparent how urgent change has become. Well, I'd certainly be among the townspeople rushing to lend a helping hand to your George Bailey in his time of need, because you're one of the good ones. One of those people who enriches others' lives, merely by being there. Keep lassoing that moon. You're gonna catch it, in some form or another. How could you not?

I saw it for the first time in my life some years ago in my town's old theatre as a Christmas special, all by myself, and I really wish I had brought some tissues at the time. It wasn't a suicidal thought to me, my parents would be hurt if I died, but I thought that if I didn't exist, they wouldn't have forced themselves to stay together, and a lot of other thoughts like that about other relationships and events in my life. A wonderful life helped me rework my perspective. I may not have accomplished my childhood dreams, but I still managed to bring good into other people's lives by being myself and in turn I've had so many happy moments with them. The older I get, the more I see my friends and sister grow into better people and I see myself become more sure and confident in myself. I'm still struggling career wise but I feel more at ease knowing I have them to lean on and knowing that there's so much to enjoy out of life than some big grand job. I just started watching your videos, and I'm sure you know it already that you've contributed a lot of insight and have fostered a great space for discussion to a lot of people. Maybe it wasn't what you dreamed of when you were younger, but at least with me, I've learned that it's ok for my priorities and hopes to change as I keep growing as a person. I'm really happy to have stumbled upon your channel and I hope you'll keep finding that spark and strength to keep pushing forward in life.

i feel you so much on feeling the weight of capitalism and the pursuit of capital above the basic needs of the many. my body gave up on me because of having to work too much. i burned out and my health will never go back the way it was. please pay attention to your needs and don't push too hard, because when you break, you will not be able to put yourself together as you were. telling people they have to work three jobs to be valuable and that 15$/hour will tank the economy is the worst thing you can do as a society. please be safe. also strange that you speak of Perfect Sense, it's a movie i saw when i was taking HEAVY medications for psychosis and i wasn't even sure that movie existed. but i vaguely recognize the story and the actors. that's crazy, after all this time. i'll try to watch it again.

Bravo, this was the video I didn't realize I still needed for 2020's prolonged farewell processing. You sir are preaching to the choir in so many ways, thank you for your creativity and candor and for just putting out quality, thought provoking, engaging messages in a time when we're all still just trying to make it through to better times.

Video essays about media (and natural disasters, but that's a whole other thing) are the only thing keeping me tethered. You are one of my top three favorite essayists and I can't thank you enough for all the heart and talent you pour into all of your videos. Seriously, you're amazing. Hang in there 💗

Great video. I really enjoyed it! You are so knowledgeable. I know a thing or two about movies but I always learn new things here. It’s great. No mindless content on this channel. That’s why I love it.

I’m brand new to this channel - you reeled me in with your “In The Mouth of Madness” thumbnail, and convinced me to give you a chance with the NIN music in the opening... and I adore all the lockdown/contagion films you mentioned (adding “Sea Fever” and “Whiteout” to the queue) but the moment you **REALLY** had me was with your inclusion of “Perfect Sense”. I fucking **LOVE** this film and no one ever seems to know about it. Absolutely makes me sob every time I see it, and that score... oh my god the score. Also, your “witness” metaphor from “Mad Max: Fury Road” to reference how people refusing to wear a mask are just warboy’ing it up around those of us that are trying to safeguard our own health was just, well... chef’s kiss, you know? But your anti-capitalist segment and then a return to “In The Mouth of Madness” had me sold (the picture of him eating popcorn in an empty theater covered in crosses from his time in the sanitarium is my Facebook profile). All this to say, you ARE building a community. I’ve never been here before, but you invited me in immediately, welcomed me, spoke my language, and invited me back. And back I’ll be, consider me subbed and the bell rung, and looking forward to more! Edit - but I dearly hope the theater industry survives. Like “In The Mouth of Madness”, I’m frequently the only one there (even pre-pandemic). And it will always be the *best* place to watch a film, even with a 65” OLED and a Dolby Atmos system at home, I will always prefer the theater.

I really love the vulnerability you show and how it's fundamental to your analysis ! Not only are you a great encyclopedia to movies relating to all states of mind but your challenging of preconcieved notions is so refreshing !

hello! you may never see this, i don't usually leave youtube comments, but i have been silently watching your videos for a long time. i just wanted to say that you're a very talented, well-spoken, passionate person. and i understand how you're feeling. i just graduated college last May and my life post-grad has been... nothing like i envisioned it would be. anyway, i admire your passion for movies and i hope you always make videos, because i sure as hell enjoy watching them.

I am sorry you feel down! I know the despair in being well into adulthood and not having achieved your dreams. But you do create meaning and connections and fortify the love of cinema for thousands of us and we are very grateful.

Your content means a lot to me, and I don't think what this video and its impact on me could be put into words. Everything I've been feeling in my life, all the panic, confusion, and resigned acceptance, and finally - finding a way to become reinvigorated by the bonds we have with others and their passion and creativity. #solidarityforever and cheers to this channel, a Bailey Brothers Building and Loan of your own.

I work (more accurately I guess I *worked* and hopefully will work again) in a cinema and I miss the big screen and all, but since all these myriad lockdowns I've found I actually an watching a lot more films than I ever used too. It feels more important now where it used to just be habit to stick around after a shift and watch whatever was on. I'm more purposeful about seeing things and there wasn't a single film you mentioned which didn't pique my interest or wasn't already a film I loved too. I never bothered with Total Recall because I thought it was some old dumb action film, I never bothered with Melancholia because it looked depressing but in a boring way, I never gave It's and Wonderful Life a chance because I thought it was a Christmas movie. You're changing my life in a positive way just by convincing me to watch more movies, and I appreciate it. Thanks for the vids, and I hope the comment and like on the video all help you in the algorithm/engagement department ✌️

When I first watched one of your top 10 videos, I went back and watched all of them one after another in reverse order! I was really happy to see this come up, and I like that you discuss movies across the years since I watched your top 10 video years after they came out anyway haha. Thank you for posting and I love your videos!

Just wanted to comment and say that I came across your channel when you posted your Birds of Prey video and I immediately knew that I needed to subscribe. I’ve enjoyed your content since then and going back to watch your previous vids as well. Also, it’s great seeing that so many of the movies you talked about in this video I watched (mostly for the first time) in 2020 as well, it was really interesting getting your perspective on them!

Whew, this made me emotional. Been trying to phrase my appreciation for not just this video but all your work that I've watched, but I can't get it out right. Just know that you're a great voice on this (often) miserable site.
