Mercedes' entry into the growing "Crazy Fast Crossover" segment is a hot rodded Bulldog of the group: the 2020 Mercedes GLC63S. In the US Market, if you want your "63" with a helping of "S," meaning 40 extra HP, you have to take the "coupe" roof exclusively. That unfortunate fact aside, the 500-horsepower, raucus 4.0LTT V8 engine is wholeheartedly most fun in class, the ride and handling are excellent, and the sound is tuned like a fine brass horn.
Mercedes provided the vehicle, insurance, and a tank of fuel for this review.

well the thing about these big vehicles and their rated numbers and auto gearboxes, Matt mentioned this, is that their actual 0-60 time is often a full second more than their claimed 0-60 time, which doesn't include either 0-5mph or a few feet of rollout. It takes a whole lot to get a huge heavy vehicle with an auto out from a dig, and it'll be especially slow unless you rely on special computer and mechanical systems (launch control).

@@sasha-taylor im surprised why 5-60 times aren't talked about more most people who buy these will rarely launch them from a dig and are much more likely to pull from a stop light also that's how you can tell if a turbo engine is properly tuned if the 0-60 is great but the 5-60 is bad

Ever seen a modern GM car? Brand new silverados have funky brake lights. The center brake light turns off first when you let off the pedal, then the outer lights turn off. It’s so odd. Camaros and Corvettes do it too

@@jeppewerring Lol. The original comment had nothing to do with quality. You literally can get a lot of colors in this or even in an Audi or BMW. The leather on Mercedes' seats is still really nice, the thing is sometimes Mercedes doesn't put it as much as the other manufacturers do in other places lol. But interiors always look nicer and places you touch are nice. And to be honest everyone just points it out in a Mercedes while bmw and audi are always the "good" ones. In the new Audis with the screens the whole center part is cheaply made, is shallow and shakes. In the new Bmws i can't critique it as much but still. Mercedes always makes high quality window switches and buttons, when in the audis you do everything from the screens and in bmws they arent as nice. It's as the guy below you said. They all got their disadvantages, but mercedes still might be just a bit worse in terms of quality than the other 2 or let's say bmw.

Weird, here in Canada it comes in both...honestly love the look of the regular GLC looks crisp. The slopped roof looks like a c63 bulked up ridiculous in my opinion.

The E series wagons are much better visually. In general wagons > COUPESUV This car is a monster still, but I'm still not sold on the Coupe-suv hybridization in terms of design. It's almost like a less confident SUV with its sloping rear - it wants to be something it's not. I want an suv to be an suv, and be confident in those body lines. There are good looking SUVS out there. Also, as always, save the wagons. Thanks for continuing to provide great automotive content, Matt.

@@howardhuang8433 non-M Sport X7 is low-key a good looking BMW. It's really boxy, nice straight lines, and not that aggro apart from the kidneys, which, tbh, don't look so out of place. I mean, still, to say an X7 is a nice BMW shows how bad today's BMWs, but it is what it is.

Why on earth do manufacturers continue to call these 4 door SUV's "coupe's"?? I thought the very definition of the word coupe was a hard topped, 2 door vehicle. Am I wrong? If I'm not, then this thing is as much a coupe as it is a convertible.

I have a 2012 C63 (the 6.2L one) that I've owned for 3 years and have put 30k of the 67k miles it has and it has cost me $0.00 in unexpected repairs.

I'm in the Bay Area and I have the GLC63 SUV (I HATE "coupe" SUVs). The modes Matt was driving in are present in both trims so you probably wont notice any difference between the 63 and 63S. It's not until you put it in "Race" mode with driving dynamics on "Master" (exclusive to 63S) that the system will not cut power and allow you to get a little sideways. As for the 34HP deficit, since this car runs the same M177 engine on both trims a quick software tune will make up the reduced power and then some. Matts welcomed to drive mines whenever he's in town.

Assuming the S and non-S version are the same engine I imagine you could get S level performance with a tune and get the normal roof.

A "stage 1" tune with no other engine modifications will give any AMG equipped with this engine the same power level as the E63. 603HP

Mercedes, like BMW, has too many models and too many variations of each model. I do recall a time where MB's lineup was limited to 1 full size sedan, 1 mid size sedan, 1 SUV, a few compact sedan and coupe offerings and eventually 1 crossover. Each had a few variations but were easily identifiable. Now it's mind boggling how many cars, trucks and crossovers MB offers. If they sell then MB will keep making them but I don't know, MBs are on every corner now.

@@DevPack What I'm saying is that hellcats (all) perform worse in real life than their numbers on paper suggest. Especially when you talk about anything other than straight line acceleration. This AMG SUV will run circles around even a Challenger Hellcat on track, let alone an SUV Hellcat that's gonna handle even worse.

They are supposed to be big and heavy just like muscle cars are supposed to be. Straight line monsters. Also no ones taking their SUVs to a race track lol that's just stupid. Trackhawks run consistent numbers on a drag strip so will the Durango as it takes minimal effort to launch. Ive run a 10.9 in my stock 2018 hellcat.

Had one for a week in early spring 2018, boy do I miss this car. Fast as the F40 and tons of fun. Thirst and price only downsides. Yes some Teslas are faster but they do not sound like this.

It’s quite an odd look all decked out in chrome and the multi-spoke silver wheels haha. Not all that menacing! Happy we’ve got the conventional hatch GLC63S in Canada! I finally drove the X3M Comp last weekend and I’ve never experienced such atrocious turbo lag in a modern car - even when it was on boost, it just didn’t have the gallop the GLC63S and my SVR has according to the butt dyno (could be the smooth power delivery or the fact it only had 100 miles on the clock). X3 probably handles the best though.

Yeah this is true about amgs I have one when you in manual mode and your in sports + and you miss a shift it will literally stop you and you have to shift to the next gear or your car won’t go..it happens to me all the time so whenever you wanna race someone on the road you better switch it to automatic so it just shift it self..it’s so embarrassing when it happens tho wish they change that
